# Pain signal flags in software review cons: methodology

Snapshot queried September 27, 2026. Publisher: BigIdeasDB. These files contain aggregate results only, with no reviewer identities, raw review text, vendor names or internal row identifiers. Exact counts are supplied for reproducibility; article prose uses rounded counts. This is an observational convenience corpus, not a representative sample of software buyers.

## Population
All Capterra reviews stored in BigIdeasDB whose `cons` field has 40 or more characters and whose overall rating is present: 266,902 reviews covering 13,311 companies. Reviews are dated 2008 to December 2025. Coverage thins toward the end of the alphabet because the collection stopped part-way through the category list.

## Flags (case-insensitive PostgreSQL regular expressions on the cons text)

A review can carry more than one flag. "Any signal" counts each review once.

## Precision check
For each flag we drew 15 random matching reviews and judged by hand whether the flag described the reviewer's own situation. Consequence 9 of 15, workaround 12 of 15, switch 7 of 15 (switch matches mix people leaving the product with people who arrived from another one). A first, looser version of the patterns produced more false positives and was discarded.

## Limits
The flags measure what reviewers wrote, not what happened to them. A low rating is a proxy for dissatisfaction, not proof of churn or willingness to pay. No causal claim is made.
