How to Calculate Break-Even Point for SaaS: Formula & Free Calculator
The break-even point is when your revenue equals your costs. For SaaS, this is the number of customers or MRR level where you stop losing money and start generating profit.

Break-even formula
Break-Even Customers = Fixed Monthly Costs / (ARPU - Variable Cost Per Customer). For example, if your fixed costs are $3,000/month, ARPU is $30, and variable cost per customer is $5, you break even at 120 customers.
For SaaS, variable costs per customer are typically low (hosting, support), so the formula simplifies to: Break-Even ≈ Fixed Costs / ARPU.
How to reach break-even faster
There are two paths: reduce fixed costs or increase revenue per customer. For solo founders, fixed costs are already minimal — so focus on increasing ARPU through better pricing, upsells, or moving upmarket.
Annual pricing helps too: if a customer pays $300 upfront instead of $30/month, your break-even timeline compresses significantly.

FAQ
How long should it take to break even?
Most micro SaaS products should aim to break even within 6-12 months. If it takes longer, your costs are too high or your pricing is too low.
Does break-even include my salary?
It depends on your goal. For a side project, exclude salary. For a full-time business, include a minimum salary in your fixed costs to ensure sustainability.
Is the break-even calculator free?
Yes. BigIdeasDB's Break-Even Calculator is 100% free with no login required.
