How to Search Pain Points and SaaS Opportunities With MCP
Last updated: April 2026
BigIdeasDB MCP includes two cross-platform tools that aggregate data from multiple sources. search_pain_points combines Reddit and Capterra pain points into a single search, and search_saas_opportunities does the same for market gaps and product ideas. Both let you filter by data source.
search_pain_points
This tool searches validated customer pain points from both Reddit discussions and Capterra software reviews. Reddit pain points include frequency, impact, subreddit source, and user quotes. Capterra pain points include severity scores, business impact descriptions, frustration levels, mention counts, churn risk indicators, and opportunity scores.
Example prompt: 'Search pain points for onboarding across Reddit and Capterra'. Returns problems from both sources so you can see if a pain point is validated across community discussions and paid software reviews. For more on pain-point-driven research, read finding SaaS ideas from real user pain points and our complaint analysis guide.
Use the source parameter to filter: 'reddit' for community-sourced problems, 'capterra' for software review problems, or 'all' for both.
search_saas_opportunities
This tool searches scored SaaS opportunities from Reddit and Capterra. Reddit opportunities include estimated value, difficulty level, market size, target audience, key features, competition level, and monetization strategy. Capterra opportunities include opportunity scores, problem statements, proposed solutions, why existing tools fail, and MVP feature suggestions.
Example prompt: 'Search SaaS opportunities for project management'. Returns market gaps from both sources with scoring to help you prioritize which opportunities to pursue.
Cross-referencing for validation
The most powerful use of these tools is cross-referencing. A pain point that shows up in both Reddit and Capterra is more likely to be a real, widespread problem. An opportunity that appears in both sources with high scores is more likely to be viable.
Go further by combining with Upwork pain points (are people hiring freelancers to solve this?), G2 insights (do B2B users have the same complaint?), and TrustMRR data (what are existing solutions earning?). Read our validation checklist for the full framework, or see how to validate a SaaS idea before coding.
FAQ
What is the difference between a pain point and an opportunity?
A pain point is a validated customer problem — something users complain about or struggle with. An opportunity is a scored product idea derived from pain points, including market size estimates, difficulty, and feature suggestions.
Can I search only Reddit or only Capterra?
Yes. Both tools accept a source parameter with values reddit, capterra, or all. Use this to filter by data source.
How are opportunity scores calculated?
Capterra opportunity scores combine pain intensity, market demand, competitive gap, and implementation feasibility into a single score. Reddit opportunities use estimated value based on market size and competition analysis.
