BigIdeasDB MCP Troubleshooting: Fix Common Connection and Tool Errors

If you are having trouble with the BigIdeasDB MCP server, this guide covers the most common issues and how to fix them. Most problems are configuration-related and can be resolved in under a minute.

429 Rate limit exceeded
BigIdeasDB MCP allows 1,000 requests per day and 100 requests per minute. If you hit the minute limit, wait 60 seconds and retry. If you hit the daily limit, it resets at midnight UTC.
Rate limits apply across all 21 tools combined. If you are doing heavy research, spread your queries across multiple sessions rather than running them all at once.
Empty results or no matches
If a tool returns zero results, try broadening your search query. Use shorter, more generic keywords. For example, instead of 'AI-powered customer success onboarding automation tool', try 'customer onboarding' or just 'onboarding'.
Some tools search specific fields. If searching Capterra reviews, the query matches against review text, pros, cons, and reviewer industry. If your keyword does not appear in those fields, you will get no results.
Tools not appearing in your AI client
After adding the MCP configuration, restart your AI client completely. Some clients cache the tool list and require a full restart to pick up new servers. Check the setup guide for client-specific instructions, or see how to use MCP with Claude for Claude Desktop-specific steps.
Verify the server URL is exactly correct: https://bigideasdb.com/api/mcp/reddit. The URL must include the protocol (https://) and the full path.
Connection timeout
Reddit tools may occasionally time out because they query live Reddit data through a proxy. If a Reddit tool times out, retry the request. Data tools (Capterra, G2, App Store, Upwork, Revenue Intelligence) query BigIdeasDB databases directly and are faster.
If all tools time out, check that your network can reach HTTPS endpoints. Corporate firewalls or VPNs may block the connection.
mcp-remote bridge not found
Some AI clients that do not support hosted MCP natively require the mcp-remote bridge. Run 'npx mcp-remote' once to install it. Make sure Node.js 18 or later is installed on your machine.
FAQ
How do I regenerate my MCP credentials?
Go to your BigIdeasDB dashboard, navigate to the MCP section, revoke the old credential, and click Generate Credentials. You can have up to 3 active credentials at a time.
Why do Reddit tools take longer than other tools?
Reddit tools query live Reddit data through a proxy service. Other tools query BigIdeasDB's own databases directly, which is faster. Reddit tool latency depends on Reddit's response time.
Can I increase my rate limits?
The current limits are 1,000 requests per day and 100 per minute. These are sufficient for most research workflows. Contact support if you need higher limits for a specific use case.
What if I see HTTP 204 responses?
204 No Content is normal for MCP notification messages. Your client sends a notification after initialization and the server correctly returns no body. This is expected behavior, not an error.
