Use Google Trends to investigate vocabulary, timing, and relative search interest. Record the settings, compare similar concepts, exclude incomplete periods, and inspect the underlying intent. A rising index is not a buyer count, and a zero does not prove that a narrow SaaS market has no customers.
Google Trends can help you evaluate search interest, timing and vocabulary for a SaaS idea. It cannot tell you how many buyers exist or whether they will pay. Use it to decide what to investigate next, then test the problem and purchase behavior separately.
A useful Trends analysis records the terms, geography, date range and comparison settings. Without those details, a chart that looks convincing can be impossible to interpret.

We retrieved Google Trends data on September 16, 2026, comparing the exact search terms “micro saas” and “app ideas” in the United States, using the same past-12-month window.
The returned weekly series ran from September 14, 2025 through September 13, 2026. We excluded the week beginning September 13 because it was still in progress on the retrieval date, leaving 52 weekly observations.

The recent “app ideas” average was 8.6% lower than the preceding four-week average: (24 ÷ 26.25 − 1) × 100.
The analogous calculation for “micro saas” is −62.5%, but the values are so close to the measurement floor that treating this as a precise market contraction would be misleading. Small absolute changes in a low-volume, rounded, sampled index produce dramatic percentages.
The defensible finding is narrower: this particular comparison returned lower recent indexed interest for both terms. It does not establish that the SaaS market is shrinking or that founders should stop building apps.
Compare terms that could express the same buyer need. “CRM,” “micro saas” and “app ideas” describe different things: a software category, a business model and an ideation activity. Their relative search interest is not a ranking of business opportunities.
A more useful investigation starts with the customer's task. For a reporting product, candidates might include a category name, the manual task and a common failure. Inspect the results for each phrase before treating it as commercial demand.
A phrase could refer to a stock ticker, a training course, a consumer app or an unrelated abbreviation. Read the results and confirm that the people searching are plausibly the people you want to serve.
Google Trends supports search terms and topics. Keep the selection type consistent or explicitly explain why it differs. Do not silently compare a broad topic containing related language with one exact phrase and call the result a fair contest.
Use more than one time window and inspect the event behind the movement. A short spike may reflect news, a product launch or curiosity rather than recurring demand.

A single annual peak does not prove seasonality. Our example has only one year of data; it cannot establish that “app ideas” reliably peaks every November.
Keep exports from the same retrieval together. Because the index is normalized to its comparison, you should not stitch independently scaled downloads into one continuous market-size series.
A zero can reflect insufficient search volume at the selected resolution. It is not proof that no one has the problem. It is especially unhelpful to interpret a zero as commercial failure when you are testing a very narrow B2B workflow. Google Trends data FAQ
Try a broader description that still preserves the buyer's intent. Expand geography or the time window where that matches your market. Then look for evidence outside search: a repeated task, paid manual work, an existing product or a customer willing to test an offer.
Also distinguish an empty response from a software failure. In this research run, the Trends interest-over-time tool returned data, but the related-query call failed with an upstream response-parsing error. No related-query values were inferred from that failure.
Use the result to choose an investigation, not to manufacture a confidence score.

In our example, the next question is whether target customers still spend time or money solving the underlying problem. “Micro SaaS” may be language founders use rather than language customers use when buying software.
That distinction is a reason to research a task such as scheduling, reconciliation or follow-up, rather than generating another list of fashionable categories.

A compact chart or headline can conceal how little changed in absolute index points. These are the complete weeks used for the adjacent four-week calculation. Both terms came from the same comparison request. The index is relative and rounded; it is not a count of searches.

For app ideas, the block totals are 105 and 96, producing means of 26.25 and 24.00. Dividing the recent mean by the preceding mean and subtracting one gives approximately minus 8.6%. For micro saas, totals of eight and three produce means of 2.00 and 0.75. The percentage movement looks much more dramatic because its starting value is small.
This makes a practical difference to the decision. The data can justify checking whether the search language or attention has changed. It cannot justify a forecast that a founder’s potential revenue fell by the same percentage. Start with a sentence describing who needs to accomplish what. Then identify language for the category, the task, and the failure. For a small service business, these might involve lead follow-up, keeping customer records, and missed callbacks. These are proposed research directions, not terms for which this article reports Trends measurements.
Read the search results for each phrase. Check whether the results concern business buyers, consumers, tutorials, jobs, or entertainment. A phrase with substantial search interest can be commercially irrelevant to the product you intend to sell. “Micro SaaS” describes a type of business that founders might want to run. The person buying an appointment reminder may never use that phrase. Do not combine a broad topic, a narrow exact phrase, and a brand name just because the chart looks interesting. Decide what the comparison should establish. If the goal is wording, compare ways of expressing the same need. If the goal is seasonal timing, keep the concept stable while changing the time window.

One year of weekly data can show a peak, but it cannot demonstrate that the peak repeats. Before calling a pattern seasonal, examine multiple comparable years and investigate what happened around the peaks. The present article does not claim a multi-year seasonal finding. Its first app-ideas peak occurred in the week beginning November 30, 2025, within one retrieved window. A regional score describes relative interest under the selected settings. It does not provide a count of buyers, companies, or searches in that region. A small region and a large region can have similar indexed interest while differing substantially in absolute scale.
Use regional results to decide where to investigate language, alternatives, and access to buyers. Then use an appropriate source for the population or business denominator. Record whether your estimated reachable market is consumers, establishments, teams, or individual professionals. Those units should not be silently interchanged.

A useful sequence asks a different question of each source. Search results show current language and alternatives. Public reviews show experiences people chose to describe. Do not count several summaries of the same underlying post as independent corroboration. Preserve the original source when available and distinguish records from people. If you already run a website, Search Console can show how your pages appear for queries. That is a view of your site’s search performance, not the entire market. A page can gain clicks because its ranking or snippet improves while interest in the broader topic remains unchanged. Keep site performance and relative search interest in separate columns.
Likewise, a referral from an AI assistant and a Google search click are different acquisition observations. Neither proves a signup without an attributable conversion event. If your decision concerns AI search performance, inspect the relevant source data rather than treating a Trends chart as evidence of AI referrals.

The local Trends tool successfully returned interest-over-time data for this research. Its related-query request failed with an upstream parsing error. That means we have no related-query finding from that call. It does not mean there were no related queries, and it is not a reason to invent a breakout keyword.

The same principle applies to a zero value in a successful response. Check whether the term is too narrow and whether a broader but still relevant phrase helps. Then use interviews and observed work.
