Buying an auto repair shop: what 1,300+ shops for sale ask, earn and hide
Not a broker's pitch. Every US auto repair shop for sale that we could count once, read for price, owner earnings, the building, the technicians, who does the work and why the owner is leaving.
The short answer
Buying an auto repair shop is a reasonable first acquisition if you are buying technicians who stay and a shop that runs without the owner under a car. The median US listing asks $460K on $173K of owner earnings (SDE), a 2.80x multiple on a 24.0% margin (Main Street Index, 1,300+ US listings, October 2026). That is a 35.7% earnings yield before debt, and auto repair ranks 28th of 118 industries on our Buyer Fit score.
Two numbers decide most deals. First, whether the building is in the price: shops with real estate ask 6.62x, leased shops 2.54x and pay a median 36.1% of SDE in rent. Second, headcount: shops with eight or more staff ask 3.42x yet earn $33K of SDE per employee, against 2.31x and $75K for one- and two-person shops, where the owner is usually a technician. After a 90% loan, an $80K salary and an equipment reserve, the median shop leaves about $17K a year.
Most of what ranks for this search is forum threads and vendor tip lists with no numbers. This guide is built from the Main Street Index, BigIdeasDB’s census of 84,900+ businesses-for-sale listings from 29 marketplaces, counted once per business. It holds 1,800+ auto repair shops for sale worldwide. We analyse the 1,300+ in the US, priced in dollars on a seller’s discretionary earnings basis. SDE is owner earnings: profit before the owner’s own pay, interest and depreciation. Every figure is an asking price or a stated earnings figure, not a closing price. Medians below 30 listings are withheld.
The live listings and size bands sit on the auto repair industry page. If you already have a shop in front of you, paste its price and SDE into the business price checker to see where it lands against the auto repair band.
“Buying an auto shop without experience is possible but will be challenging on several levels. Brokers, sellers, lenders, and landlords may all have serious doubts about the suitability of the purchase.”r/smallbusiness, a business broker
That answer tops the Reddit thread Google ranks first for buying a mechanic shop with no experience. The data below shows why: in this industry the people who do the work are the asset, and the listings rarely tell you whether they will stay.
Buying an auto repair shop at a glance
Across 1,300+ US auto repair listings in the Main Street Index (October 2026), the median shop has operated 21 years, employs four people and turns $806K of revenue into $173K of SDE. The table is the one-screen version of this guide.

Is buying an auto repair shop a good investment?
On asking economics, auto repair is a better-than-average buy: it ranks 28th of 118 US industries on Main Street Index Buyer Fit (59.0 of 100), ahead of HVAC (40th), plumbing (42nd), car washes (86th) and tire shops (92nd). The score weighs earnings yield, affordability, margin, durability, healthy exits, supply, productivity, seller financing and real estate. Auto repair scores highest on supply (1,300+ US shops for sale), healthy exits (99.1% of stated reasons are retirement or other non-distress reasons) and owned real estate.
Demand is the part buyers rarely question, and the Reddit threads explain why. The most upvoted answer to a couple buying a retiring owner’s shop with an SBA loan:
“When the economy gets tight, people will be less likely to buy new cars. They will hold on to their older model longer, and will still be driving it after the manufacturer warranty runs out. This means they will tend to visit independent shops more often.”r/smallbusiness, top reply on a shop purchase thread
“Auto repair is recession-resistant; people fix old cars when they can't afford new ones. In 2008, I saw local shop revenue increase because people skipped dealerships to save money.”r/smallbusiness
Where it scores lower is margin and affordability: a $460K median ask is a bigger cheque than a pool route or a salon, and labour eats the margin as shops grow. The fit depends on the buyer:
- Good investment if you can lead technicians, read a repair order and keep the customers who trusted the last owner, and you buy a shop with tenured techs, a service writer and earnings you can see in tax returns.
- Poor investment if you want passive income in year one, you cannot judge a technician’s work, or the shop’s earnings exist because the seller works 55 hours a week as its best diagnostician.

How much is an auto repair shop worth?
The median US auto repair shop asks $460K, and a reasonable first read is 1.6x to 4.3x SDE depending on size (Main Street Index, 826 listings with a multiple, October 2026). Size moves the multiple more than anything else we measured, and much of the rise at the top is the building.
| Asking band | Listings (multiples) | Median ask | Median SDE | Multiple p25 | Multiple p50 | Multiple p75 | SDE margin | Building included |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $100K | 68 (33) | $70K | $59K | 0.86x | 1.17x | 1.79x | 21.0% | 0% |
| $100K to $250K | 255 (155) | $175K | $100K | 1.23x | 1.62x | 2.50x | 24.7% | 0.8% |
| $250K to $500K | 344 (247) | $350K | $150K | 1.73x | 2.24x | 3.01x | 25.6% | 5.5% |
| $500K to $1M | 267 (179) | $700K | $227K | 2.55x | 3.06x | 3.98x | 24.0% | 19.9% |
| $1M to $5M | 314 (202) | $1.6M | $358K | 3.35x | 4.34x | 7.04x | 22.0% | 41.7% |
| All US listings | 1,200+ (826) | $460K | $173K | 1.87x | 2.80x | 3.95x | 24.0% | 16.6% |
Read the last column with the multiples. In the $1M to $5M band, 41.7% of listings include the building, which is why the 75th percentile reaches 7.04x. Below $250K almost no listing includes property, and those shops ask 1.2x to 1.6x because they are, in most cases, an owner and a helper. 28 listings report SDE higher than their own asking price; treat each one as a verification job, not a bargain.
By state, among states with 30+ listings with a multiple (templated listings removed): California asks the least at 2.23x ($166K SDE, n=114), then Arizona 2.69x (n=30), New York 2.81x ($223K SDE, n=56), Texas 2.86x (n=83) and Florida 3.01x (n=86). California and Texas together hold a quarter of US supply.
“What's revenue? At $150k SDE I'm gonna guess it's comfortably under $1M and you've only got a couple techs, and maybe don't even have a service advisor.”r/smallbusiness, replying to a buyer looking at a $395K shop with $150K SDE
That buyer’s deal sits almost exactly on the $250K to $500K band median ($350K ask, $150K SDE, 2.24x), so at 2.63x it was priced a little above its peers. For the general method, see how to value a small business; for the cross-industry version of this table, the best business to start or buy at each budget.
The copied listings
24 US auto repair listings (1.8%) repeat exactly the same stated SDE and revenue as at least two others in different states (Main Street Index screen, October 2026). The largest set appears 11 times across eight states with identical earnings of about $155K on $604K of revenue. 17 of the 24 are quick-lube or oil change listings, and three carry the line that a new owner needs no maintenance or mechanical experience.
Unlike HVAC, where copied listings moved the median multiple from 2.42x to 2.71x, the effect here is small: the auto repair median moves from 2.80x to 2.82x without them. Where they matter is in narrow cuts. The raw oil change cut asks 1.93x; without the copies it is 2.16x. If a shop’s figures match a listing in another city, ask for this location’s own tax returns before anything else. Our mistakes when buying a business guide covers how templated listings mislead buyers in every industry.
Building included vs leased: two different deals
The building is the biggest single driver of an auto repair asking price: shops that include real estate ask a median $1.4M on $213K of SDE (6.62x), while shops that lease ask $350K on $169K (2.54x) (Main Street Index, templated listings removed, October 2026). A third group owns the building but sells it separately, asking $585K for the business (2.85x) with the property listed at a median $855K.
| Real estate status | Listings | With multiple | Median ask | Median SDE | Median multiple | Property figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leased | 598 | 364 | $350K | $169K | 2.54x | Rent $64K a year (n=339) |
| Owned, included in price | 214 | 131 | $1.4M | $213K | 6.62x | $950K (n=89) |
| Owned, sold separately | 84 | 58 | $585K | $192K | 2.85x | $855K (n=84) |
| Owned, terms unclear | 76 | 36 | $1.1M | $260K | 3.00x | Not stated |
| Not stated | 316 | 213 | $325K | $155K | 2.24x | Not stated |
Strip the building out and the premium disappears. Among the 50 listings that include real estate and state its value, the property is a median 60% of the asking price, and the business alone works out to 2.53x SDE, the same as a leased shop. So never compare a 6x listing with a 2.5x one. Compare the business part with leased peers and price the building against local commercial property.
Rent is the cost leased buyers underrate. Leased shops pay a median $64K a year (n=339), equal to 36.1% of their SDE (n=226; middle half 23.4% to 58.5%). A shop paying rent equal to half its SDE has little room for a loan payment, and a landlord who raises it at renewal takes your margin. Only 140 US listings give a lease expiry date. Get the lease term, renewal options and assignment clause in writing before the offer, and make the landlord’s consent a closing condition.
“Just to open my shop, it was 200k for a 3yr lease. And another 1.2-1.4 million to buy the building”r/mechanics, a US shop owner
“I would be deeply concerned about property taxes. There is a great chance that once bought, they would double or triple.”r/mechanics, on a technician buying a 7-bay building
Owning removes rent and lease risk, and it is one reason auto repair scores well on real estate in Buyer Fit (28.7% of listings say the owner owns the property). It also doubles the loan. The SBA 7(a) program can fund a change of ownership and real estate in one loan up to $5 million. Our gas station guide walks through the same land-vs-business split in an industry where half the listings include property. For the rent maths, the break-even calculation guide shows how fixed costs like rent move the line.
How much does an auto repair shop owner make?
The median US listing states $173K of SDE, but after a 90% loan, an $80K salary and an equipment reserve the median shop leaves about $17K a year on top of that salary (Main Street Index, 671 listings without real estate in the price, October 2026). SDE is what the seller earned before paying themselves, the bank or the next lift.
| Measure | Before equipment reserve | After 2% equipment reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Share of listings clearing 1.25x debt coverage | 57.8% | 48.4% |
| Median debt coverage | 1.39x | Lower |
| Median cash left after salary and loan | $31K | $17K |
Fewer than half of US auto repair listings carry an SBA-style loan, a market salary and equipment replacement at their asking price. That is the gap between “owner makes $173K” and what a financed buyer keeps. You close it three ways: negotiate the price toward the band median, add a seller note on standby, or keep working as a technician yourself, in which case your salary line is real labour, not a manager you hire.
“SDE of $150k doesn't leave much room for debt service or "for-hire" manager to run the place.”r/smallbusiness, an owner of oil change, car wash and detail businesses
“A back of the envelope payment estimate on a 10 year $1mil SBA loan is about $13,000 a month. Sounds like that place is way behind in tech. Lifts are certainly wore out pieces of shit. So plan on at least $100k in catch up cost.”r/smallbusiness, on a $1.1M family tire and repair shop
On the PAA question “can a mechanic make $100,000 a year”: the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for automotive service technicians at $50,620 in May 2025. A shop owner who also turns wrenches earns that wage plus whatever the shop clears after debt. Technicians are the business
In auto repair, buyers pay more per dollar of earnings for bigger shops even though each extra employee adds less profit: shops with eight or more staff ask 3.42x SDE and earn $33K of SDE per employee, while one- and two-person shops ask 2.31x and earn $75K per employee (Main Street Index, templated listings removed, October 2026). This is the pattern that makes auto repair different from other trades we have analysed.
| Employees | Listings (multiples) | Median ask | Median SDE | Multiple | SDE margin | Revenue per employee | SDE per employee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | 166 (121) | $225K | $120K | 2.31x | 27.2% | $241K | $75K |
| 3 to 4 | 272 (206) | $350K | $173K | 2.50x | 25.0% | $206K | $52K |
| 5 to 7 | 187 (130) | $700K | $217K | 3.29x | 21.0% | $184K | $38K |
| 8 or more | 162 (98) | $1.4M | $360K | 3.42x | 17.5% | $173K | $33K |
Two readings, both useful. In a one- or two-person shop the owner is almost always one of the technicians, so the high SDE per head is partly the owner’s own wage. Buy it and you either take that job or pay someone to. In an eight-person shop the margin is lower because the work is paid labour, but the business no longer depends on one pair of hands, and buyers pay a full point of multiple more for that.
Either way you are buying people who are hard to replace. The BLS projects about 66,200 openings for automotive service technicians each year from 2025 to 2035. Listings say little about the team: only 37.3% mention technicians or mechanics at all, 2.8% mention ASE certification, and just 25 say the staff are expected to stay after the sale.
“Employee turnover is high. FT tech turnover is 50 to 70 percent and up to 100 percent for PT.”r/smallbusiness, an owner of car care businesses
“Finding decent techs that dont call out all the time, dont throw temper tantrums when they cant figure out how to put something together, that are even close to decent in diag, that dont expect to be paid like master techs with only 2 years experience, dont steal”r/mechanics, a former owner of a 6-bay shop
“My shop hasn't had turnover for the last half of it's history. When you learn who you are, run yourself well and hire the right people - they don't turnover.”r/smallbusiness, a shop owner answering a former shop manager
Capacity follows the techs, not the bays. 23.0% of listings advertise their bay count and 18.3% their lifts, but an owner on r/mechanics puts the useful ratio at two bays per technician. A seven-bay building with two techs is paying for empty space. In due diligence, interview every technician, get their tenure and pay plan, and price written stay bonuses for the two you cannot lose. The same retention logic runs through our HVAC buying guide and the cross-industry easiest small business to run study.
Who does the work: the owner’s role
65.3% of US auto repair listings that describe the owner’s role are owner-operated, and they ask less: 2.47x on $156K of SDE, against 3.33x on $228K for shops sold as semi-absentee, absentee or manager-run (Main Street Index, 337 listings stating the role, October 2026). Most listings (72%) do not say.
| Owner role | Share of stated | Listings (multiples) | Median ask | Median SDE | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Owner-operator | 65.3% | 220 (167) | $350K | $156K | 2.47x |
| Semi-absentee | 12.8% | 43 (36) | n/a | $171K | 3.43x |
| Absentee or manager-run | 22.0% | 74 (50) | n/a | n/a | Withheld individually |
| All hands-off combined | 34.7% | 117 (86) | $820K | $228K | 3.33x |
| Manager stated as in place | n/a | 76 (57) | n/a | $252K | 3.31x |
The hands-off premium is real but it buys something specific: a bigger shop with a manager or service writer already paid out of SDE. The $820K median ask is 2.3 times the owner-operated median. If you cannot afford that, you are buying an owner-operated shop, and the question is which of the owner’s jobs you can do. Diagnosis, estimating and the customer relationship are the three that walk out with a retiring owner.
“As long as you have seasoned professionals below you. BUT if you don't have automotive management experience, you'll need at least a strong business management background. and people with experience make better managers, because they know what happens in the shops. No one likes a paper pusher telling the shop guys what to do.”r/smallbusiness, a former managing partner of an auto repair business
“Running a business is TWO full time jobs. Especially at the beginning.”r/mechanics, a technician on buying while working full time
For the cross-industry view of what owner-operated businesses earn and ask, see buying a business from a retiring owner, which covers how to plan a handover when the seller is the business.
Buying a mechanic shop with no experience
You can, but almost no seller is pitching to you: only 20 of 1,300+ US auto repair listings (1.5%) say no experience is needed, three of them copies of one templated listing (Main Street Index, October 2026). The rest assume a buyer who knows the trade or will hire someone who does.
The replies on the threads Google ranks for this question split into three camps, and each one holds part of the answer.
“I'm a CPA. This is a bad idea. This is a business where the owner needs to have a very good understanding of the business and be able to step in.”r/smallbusiness, a CPA
“You do not need to be a master mechanic haha crazy , My boss is nothing but an owner of a Auto Repair Shop , 2 to be exact . His shops are doing just fine”r/smallbusiness, a store manager for a non-mechanic owner
“For best results, find a partner who has the missing expertise. Someone other than the seller is ideal to avoid conflicting interests. Even an outside mechanic with only 10% equity may make all the difference.”r/smallbusiness, a business broker
What the data adds, and what to do with it:
- Buy size, not a bargain. Shops under $250K are mostly the owner plus one or two people (median two employees). Without the owner’s hands, the SDE is not there. A five-plus person shop asks 3.29x but has a team you can manage rather than replace.
- Pay for a manager or service writer in the model. One car care operator on Reddit puts a manager who will not hold you hostage at about $75K. Subtract it from SDE before you judge the price.
- Buy the lead tech’s loyalty. A small equity stake, a stay bonus or a profit share for the best diagnostician is cheaper than losing them in month three.
- Insure for the work, not just the building. A US shop owner on r/mechanics carries over $2 million in completed operations coverage because the owner is liable for every repair that leaves the bay.
“If you get a dishonest mechanic in there, it can destroy your shop reputation before you realize it.”r/smallbusiness, a former shop manager
The disadvantages of buying an existing business guide covers the general version of this risk, and how to buy a business with Main Street Index shows how to filter for shops that state a manager in place.
Collision, transmission, quick lube and other specialties
Collision and body shops are 23.0% of US auto repair listings and ask a median $650K on $229K of SDE, against $445K on $162K for mechanical shops, at almost the same multiple (2.80x vs 2.89x) (Main Street Index, keyword cut, templated listings removed, October 2026). The Main Street taxonomy keeps body, collision and transmission shops inside auto repair and lists tire shops separately.
| Specialty or feature mentioned | Share of listings | Multiples | Median multiple | Median SDE | SDE margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collision or body work | 23.0% | 174 | 2.80x | $229K | 22.5% |
| Mechanical only (no collision) | 77.0% | 628 | 2.89x | $162K | 24.2% |
| Fleet accounts | 25.1% | 251 | 2.89x | $197K | 21.3% |
| Tires | 13.5% | 143 | 2.77x | $156K | 24.9% |
| Oil change or quick lube (no copies) | 9.5% | 97 | 2.16x | $155K | n/a |
| Transmission | 9.7% | 81 | 3.00x | $200K | 22.4% |
| Alignment | 7.6% | 78 | 3.29x | $180K | 23.1% |
| European or import | 6.1% | 57 | 2.74x | $231K | 26.0% |
| State inspection, smog or emissions | 5.9% | 54 | 2.69x | $154K | 26.9% |
| Towing | 5.0% | 47 | 3.83x | $247K | 20.8% |
| Diesel | 3.9% | 40 | 2.92x | $188K | 24.0% |
- Collision earns more in dollars on more revenue ($1.1M median) but 34.7% of collision listings mention insurance or direct repair programs. One insurer can be a third of revenue. Ask for revenue by payer and the DRP agreements, and check whether they transfer.
- Fleet work appears in a quarter of listings. It smooths revenue: a former shop manager on r/smallbusiness says fleet and dealership accounts are how they filled slow months. It brings the same concentration risk.
- Quick lube asks the least (2.16x) and is where most templated listings sit. It is a volume and staffing business more than a diagnostic one.
- Transmission and towing ask more (3.00x and 3.83x). Towing adds trucks you will have to replace.
Tire shops are a separate industry in the index and look worse on paper: 3.05x on a 17.8% margin, 92nd of 118 on Buyer Fit (see the tire shop industry page). If you are weighing a car wash instead, its 5.64x multiple is mostly real estate; the car wash industry page and our car wash buying guide break it down.
“Be it agricultural, diesel, body work and painting, performance, fleet. Basically, everything but general service and repair. Crazy thing, the most bang for my buck was just plain old brakes and rotors.”r/mechanics, a former mobile mechanic
Franchise vs independent auto repair shops
12.9% of US auto repair listings are franchise resales, and they hide their earnings far more often: only 36.1% show both price and SDE, against 66.0% of independent shops (Main Street Index, 169 franchise and 1,100+ independent listings, October 2026). Where they do disclose, franchise shops ask 3.00x on $235K of SDE (n=61); independents ask 2.80x on $172K (n=741).
The franchise multiple rests on 61 listings, so treat it as directional. The pattern matches our franchise vs independent study across 21 industries: franchises ask a higher multiple at a lower margin, and royalties come out before SDE. Before you buy a franchise resale, get the franchise disclosure document, the transfer fee and the remaining term, and confirm the franchisor approves you as the buyer.
“There are franchise auto concepts and the owners are never working in the business. If this is an independent business it is best for you to speak with the owner to get an understanding of their involvement with the business. Also find out if any team members will leave if the business is sold.”r/smallbusiness, on franchise auto concepts
Electric vehicles: the risk sellers do not mention
Only 16 of 1,300+ US auto repair listings (1.2%) mention EVs, hybrids or Tesla, and 14 mention ADAS calibration (Main Street Index keyword cut, October 2026). Sellers are not pricing the EV transition in either direction, so the buyer has to.
The exposure sits in specific job types. Oil changes, engine repair, exhaust and transmission work shrink on an electric car; brakes wear more slowly with regenerative braking; tires, suspension, alignment, glass and collision repair apply to every car. A shop whose revenue is mostly engine and transmission work carries more long-term risk than a collision or alignment shop. Ask the seller for three years of revenue by job category and price the engine-dependent share accordingly.
“If I were going to start a general repair shop, I would be focusing specifically on EV tech. There's almost no shops in anywhere who will even touch EV's, and it's a huge market failure in my opinion.”r/mechanics
“If you want to expand, begin the process to specialize in EV repairs and maintenance.”r/smallbusiness, on a shop purchase
Owners on Reddit see it as an opening as much as a threat. The listings say almost nobody for sale has acted on it yet, which is either a growth lever you can add or a gap you inherit.
Seller financing, SBA loans and price cuts
21.1% of US auto repair listings say seller financing is offered, and they ask 2.83x, almost the same as the 2.80x of listings that say nothing (Main Street Index, 277 offering, October 2026). Only 24 listings refuse it. In this industry a seller note does not come bundled with a higher price, which makes it worth asking for on every deal.
- SBA: 32 listings say they are SBA prequalified (3.42x, $261K SDE) and 32 more mention eligibility. Lenders underwrite tax returns and debt coverage, so a shop whose returns show less than its SDE may not qualify for the price.
- Price cuts: 149 listings (11.3%) show a price reduction, and they ask a median 2.24x (n=83), below the 2.80x market. A cut listing is a negotiating signal, not a verdict on quality.
- Equipment: 100 listings describe equipment as new or updated, and they ask 3.12x (n=68). Only 11.1% of listings comment on equipment condition at all.

Why owners sell auto repair shops
64.4% of US auto repair listings with a stated reason say retirement, one of the highest shares of any industry we track, followed by other business interests (15.5%), relocation (6.8%) and health (3.0%) (Main Street Index, 923 stated reasons, October 2026). Burnout is 0.3% and financial distress 0.1%.
“After 45 years in business the owner would like to retire.”business-for-sale listing
“Having low back issues and am looking to rotate out of the car business.”business-for-sale listing

Retirement sales are healthy exits, but they come with a specific risk: a 21-year-old shop built on one person’s reputation. Customers come back because they trust the owner, and 42.2% of listings sell on repeat or loyal customers. Ask for a 3 to 6 month paid transition, an introduction to the top accounts and a non-compete. Our study of why owners sell their businesses compares these reasons across industries.

Auto repair shop due diligence checklist
These eight checks follow from the numbers above; each one targets a gap that 1,300+ US listings leave open (Main Street Index, October 2026). Run them before the letter of intent, not after.
- Rebuild SDE from tax returns and bank deposits. Ask for three years of returns and 24 months of bank statements. Reject add-backs a new owner will still pay, especially the owner's own labour as a technician.
- Price the building separately. If the real estate is included, get an appraisal and price the business on its own. If it is leased, read the lease term, renewal option, assignment clause and rent as a share of SDE.
- Interview every technician. Get tenure, pay plan (hourly or flat rate), certifications, own tools and whether each will stay. Price stay bonuses for the two you cannot lose.
- Map who does what. Find out who diagnoses, who writes service, who orders parts and who calls the angry customer back. If the answer is always the owner, you are buying a job.
- Split revenue by job type and customer. Separate maintenance, repair, engine and transmission, tires, collision, fleet and insurance work for three years. Flag any fleet or insurer above 10% of revenue.
- Audit the repair orders. Pull 50 repair orders. Check average repair order, labour rate, parts margin, comebacks and whether inspections are estimated and presented.
- Walk the bays. List lifts, alignment rack, scan tools, paint booth or frame machine, their age and service records. A deferred lift or booth is a first-year cost.
- Model the loan with a salary and an equipment reserve. Subtract a market salary, 2% of revenue for equipment and full loan payments from SDE. Keep 1.25x coverage and three months of overhead in cash.
On the repair order audit, owners use the “300% rule”: inspect 100% of vehicles, estimate 100% of what you find and present 100% of the estimates. A shop that does not do this has room to grow average repair order after the sale; a shop that over-sells it may have a reputation problem. The due diligence guide shows how to pull comparable listings for any shop, and the guide to analysing a listing with AI covers reading a seller’s P&L. Compare a shortlist side by side in the listings view.
“You're not going to be able to work in the shop for 6 straight hours. You will be interrupted by parts deliveries, customers, telemarketers calling etc.”r/mechanics, a shop owner who ran solo for years
Thinking of starting one instead?
Starting is cheaper on paper only if you are the technician: the median shop for sale comes with $100K of equipment, four employees, 21 years of customers and $806K of revenue, which is what the $460K asking price buys (Main Street Index, October 2026). A start-up pays for lifts, scan tools, rent and insurance before the first repair order.
“$400k at 5% interest over 25 years is $2338 per month with no downpayment, plus property tax plus heat/AC/lights/insurance/billing software/service information.”r/mechanics, a shop owner on a technician's plan to buy a building
A working technician with a customer following can start small and add a bay at a time. A buyer leaving a salaried job with no trade background usually does better buying an established shop with a lead tech and a service writer in place. Methodology and limits
All queries ran read-only against the Main Street Index on October 5, 2026; the universe is 1,800+ auto repair listings counted once per business, and benchmarks use the 1,300+ US listings in USD on an SDE basis. Multiples are asking price divided by stated SDE. Percentiles are withheld below n=30.
Templated listings are listings whose exact SDE and revenue pair appears three or more times across two or more states; we report results with and without them (24 listings, 1.8%). Size bands are asking-price bands. Owner involvement, manager in place, equipment condition and SBA status come from a description model that passed an accuracy gate; real estate and seller financing come from site labels. Specialties, technician, bay, lift, EV and ADAS figures are case-insensitive keyword matches on headline and description. The debt model assumes 10% down, 10.5% fixed over 10 years, an $80K salary and a 2% of revenue equipment reserve. Analysts can reproduce each cut through the Main Street Index MCP tools or the Main Street Index documentation.
Five limits matter most:
- Asking, not closing. Every price and multiple is an asking figure. Some listings never sell.
- Stated, not verified. SDE, headcount, real estate and owner role are what the listing says. Unstated is not the same as no.
- Keyword cuts are directional. A listing that mentions collision may also do mechanical work; one that never mentions EVs may still service them.
- Templated listings. We flag exact repeats across states. Pairs and listings with altered figures are not caught.
- US only. UK, Australian and Canadian auto repair listings have fewer than 30 with price and earnings on one basis, so their medians are withheld. Licensing, insurance and lease rules vary by state; nothing here is legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is buying an auto repair shop a good investment?
It can be, if you buy technicians who stay and a customer base that is not tied to the seller. Across 1,300+ US auto repair listings (Main Street Index, October 2026), the median shop asks $460K on $173K of owner earnings (SDE), a 2.80x multiple and a 35.7% earnings yield before debt. Auto repair ranks 28th of 118 industries on Buyer Fit. The risk is labour: the work is done by technicians who are hard to hire, and in small shops the owner is often one of them.
How much is an auto repair shop worth?
The median US auto repair listing asks $460K, with the middle half between $245K and $1.1M (n=1,200+ with a price). Price climbs with size: shops asking $250K to $500K report a median $150K of SDE at 2.24x, shops asking $500K to $1M report $227K at 3.06x, and shops asking $1M to $5M report $358K at 4.34x. These are asking prices, not closed deals.
What is the valuation multiple for an auto repair shop?
The median asking multiple is 2.80x SDE (middle half 1.87x to 3.95x, n=826). Shops that lease their building ask 2.54x. Shops that put the building in the price ask 6.62x, but about 60% of that price is the property; the business alone works out to about 2.53x. Compare a listing with leased peers of the same size, not with the headline figure.
How much does an auto repair shop owner make?
The median listing states $173K of SDE, which is profit before the owner's pay, loan payments and equipment replacement. If you borrow 90% of the price over 10 years at 10.5% and pay yourself $80K, the median listing without real estate in the price leaves about $31K a year on top of that salary. Set aside 2% of revenue for lifts, scan tools and equipment and it falls to about $17K. Only 57.8% of listings clear the 1.25x debt coverage lenders like before that reserve.
How profitable is an auto repair shop?
The median US listing reports an SDE margin of 24.0% on $806K of revenue. Margin falls as shops grow: 27.2% for shops with one or two employees, 21.0% with five to seven and 17.5% with eight or more. Collision shops run slightly thinner (22.5%) than mechanical shops (24.2%) but report more SDE in dollars ($229K vs $162K).
Can you buy a mechanic shop with no experience?
Yes, but plan to buy the expertise with it. Only 20 of 1,300+ US listings (1.5%) say no experience is needed, and three of those are copies of one templated listing. Brokers, lenders and landlords may doubt a buyer with no shop background, and you will depend on a lead technician. A business broker on Reddit suggests a mechanic partner with as little as 10% equity. Shops with a manager in place report $252K of SDE but ask 3.31x.
Do you need to be ASE certified to own an auto repair shop?
Certification is a technician credential, and buyers rarely see it in listings: ASE appears in 2.8% of US auto repair listings. Some states and cities register or license repair shops themselves, so check with your state before you close. What matters more to the deal is whether certified technicians stay after the sale.
Should I buy the building with an auto repair shop?
Only if you price it as two deals. 16.6% of US auto repair listings include the real estate, and they ask a median $1.4M on $213K of SDE (6.62x). Leased shops ask $350K on $169K (2.54x) but pay a median $64K a year in rent, 36.1% of their SDE. Owning removes rent and lease risk; it also doubles the loan. The SBA 7(a) program can fund both a change of ownership and real estate, up to $5 million.
What is the 300% rule for auto shops?
Shop owners use it for the service process, not valuation: inspect 100% of vehicles, estimate 100% of what the inspection finds, and present 100% of those estimates to the customer. A buyer can test it in due diligence by comparing repair orders with inspection reports. Shops that do not follow it often have room to raise average repair order value after the sale.
Is a collision shop or a mechanical repair shop better to buy?
They ask the same multiple, about 2.80x to 2.89x SDE, but they are different businesses. Collision listings (23.0% of the industry) ask a median $650K on $229K of SDE and $1.1M of revenue; 34.7% of them mention insurance or direct repair programs, which concentrates the customer base. Mechanical shops ask $445K on $162K of SDE with a slightly higher margin.
Will the seller finance an auto repair shop?
Sometimes. 21.1% of US auto repair listings say seller financing is offered and only 24 refuse it. Listings that offer financing ask 2.83x, almost the same as the 2.80x of listings that say nothing, so in this industry a seller note does not come with a higher price. 32 listings say they are SBA prequalified.
Why do owners sell auto repair shops?
Mostly to retire. Of 900+ US listings with a stated reason, 64.4% say retirement, 15.5% other business interests, 6.8% relocation and 3.0% health. Shops for sale are old: the median has operated for 21 years. A retiring owner is often the person customers trust and the best diagnostician in the building, so plan the handover around both.
Will electric vehicles hurt auto repair shops?
Not in what sellers write yet. Only 16 of 1,300+ US auto repair listings (1.2%) mention EVs, hybrids or Tesla, and 14 mention ADAS calibration. Engine and transmission work is the exposed part of the revenue; brakes, suspension, tires, alignment and collision repair apply to every car. Ask the seller to split revenue by job type so you can see how much of it is engine-related.
