ChatGPT app ideas: 17 gaps in a 4,200+ app directory
Every idea list for ChatGPT apps guesses. We counted the apps already in the directory, set them against 1M+ buyer complaints and ranked what is missing.
By Om Patel · 17 min read · Data verified October 20, 2026
Search for ChatGPT app ideas and you get the same ten suggestions: a travel planner, a shopping assistant, a food-ordering app, a real estate finder, a budget tracker. They are reasonable ideas. They are also the categories where the directory is already crowded, and none of the guides that list them says how many apps are already there.
We can say. BigIdeasDB's Agent Index is a census of the ChatGPT app directory and the Claude connector directory. For this page we took the 4,200+ ChatGPT apps, sorted them into 24 capability clusters and set each cluster against the complaint matches in our 1M+complaint corpus. Then we checked each idea against Capterra, Reddit and Upwork.
One caution first. The ChatGPT directory publishes no installs, no ratings and no popularity rank. Our rank field is empty on every one of the 4,200+ rows. So this page maps structure: what exists, what can act and where buyers complain. It cannot tell you which apps people use.
The short answer
Short answer
The best ChatGPT app ideas are action layers on top of business software that small teams already pay for. They sit in HR, support, CRM and booking, the four clusters where complaint matches hit our 1000 cap but only 11.0% of ChatGPT apps live. Candidate pipeline status, time-off approvals, ticket triage and CRM follow-up logging lead the list.
The crowded end is the opposite: AI models and agents, web search and travel hold 27.0% of the directory (1,100+ apps) and match only 90 complaints between them. Skip those unless you own the data.
Only 12.7% of ChatGPT apps publish a tool list, so the directory is mostly descriptions, not declared capabilities.
In HR and recruiting, only about 1 in 8 apps can write anything. In support, about 1 in 7.
ChatGPT's monetization docs recommend external checkout and limit approval to physical goods, so a service app should expect to bill on its own domain.
Ideas 14 to 17 have thin keyword evidence. They are flagged and ranked last on purpose.
All 17 ChatGPT app ideas at a glance
Filter by how strong the buyer-side evidence is, or sort by the supply signal. Click an idea to jump to its evidence card. Cluster figures are shared by ideas in the same cluster, because the directory is mapped by cluster, not by idea.
Showing 17 of 17. Complaints per app is complaint matches divided by ChatGPT apps in the cluster. HR, support and CRM hit the 1000-match cap, so their ratio is a floor. Write-capable is the share of the cluster's ChatGPT apps classed as write or transactional.

How we ranked these ChatGPT app ideas
Every number comes from a read-only query run on October 20, 2026. The ranking rule is simple and you can check it. Ideas 1 to 13 have enough buyer-side evidence to rank, ordered by how many complaint matches each ChatGPT app in the cluster would have to absorb. Ideas 14 to 17 sit in clusters with real demand but too little job-specific evidence, so they are ranked after the rest and labeled Thin.

The supply map: where the ChatGPT apps actually are
Our first finding runs against every idea list we read. 27.0% of ChatGPT apps (1,100+ of 4,200+) sit in just three clusters: AI models and agents, web search and research, and travel and maps. Between them those clusters match 90 complaints in our corpus. Travel is the cluster most idea lists lead with. It has 310+ apps and only 4 of them publish a tool list.
Now the other end. HR and recruiting, support and helpdesk, CRM and booking hold just 11.0% of the directory (460+ apps). In each, complaint matches reach the 1000 cap. HR has 56 apps against that cap, which is at least 17.9 complaint matches for every app. Travel has 0.2.
The directory overall leans toward productivity (980+ apps), business operations (790+) and developer tools (400+) in ChatGPT's own labels, but those labels are not capabilities. The cluster view is the one that exposes the mismatch. The full table follows. Sort it in your head by the matches-per-app column. For vendor counts and discoverability across the whole directory, see our ChatGPT apps directory market map.

Source: BigIdeasDB Agent Index, ChatGPT apps only (n = 4,200+), queried October 20, 2026. The Other bucket (420+ apps) is omitted. Matches at 1000 are a cap, not a count.
Read the table as a map of where a new app competes for attention. At the top, a builder meets few rivals and a lot of unhappy buyers. At the bottom, a builder meets hundreds of apps and almost no complaints. Complaints are not wallets, and the next section explains why that matters, but as a first filter the ratio is far more useful than a category name.
This is the same lens we use for vertical AI SaaS and the broader AI opportunity index. The new part is the supply side, which only a directory census can give you.
ChatGPT app ideas 1-6: HR, support, CRM and booking
These six sit in the four capped clusters. Each one reads data from software a small team already owns and writes one decision back. That is the shape of app ChatGPT's own developer guidance describes: a small set of well-defined tools the model can call, not a port of an entire product. Real voice first, from the Reddit thread Google ranks for this keyword.
“Most app ideas are already done, so ChatGPT will usually give something familiar, not magic. It works better if you start from a real problem you have and ask AI to help shape it.” r/BlackboxAI_
That is the case for starting from complaints rather than from a brainstorm. A model asked for app ideas returns the average of what exists, which is why the lists look alike.
#1HR and recruitingEvidence: Strong
1. Candidate pipeline status for small employers
Who pays: Owners and hiring managers at companies with 10 to 200 staff
A know-and-do app on top of the applicant tracker a small employer already pays for. It answers who applied, who is stuck and who is owed a reply, then drafts the reply for a one-tap approval. The model reads the pipeline and the user approves every write.
The gap:The HR and recruiting cluster holds 55+ ChatGPT apps and only about one in eight can write anything. Recruiting apps already listed in the directory show the category is live, so the opening is status and follow-up, not sourcing.

#2HR and recruitingEvidence: Strong
2. Time-off and payroll approval desk
Who pays: Operations leads and owners who approve hours and leave
Approve, decline and explain time off and timesheets in one conversation, with the decision written back to the payroll tool. The job is a queue of small yes-or-no decisions, which is exactly what a conversation handles well.
The gap:Same cluster as idea 1, same gap: 4 of the 56 HR apps publish a tool list, so almost no app tells the model what it is allowed to change.

#3Support and helpdeskEvidence: Strong
3. Ticket triage and first-reply drafting
Who pays: Support leads on a helpdesk the team already pays for
Read the queue, group tickets by cause, assign them and draft the first reply. The unit of value is the assignment, not the chat. A backlog is a ranking problem, and ranking is cheap for a model.
The gap:Helpdesk access already exists: two large helpdesk vendors have apps in the cluster. What is missing is triage logic with write-back. Only 10 of 71 apps in the cluster can write, and 5 publish a tool list.

#4CRM and sales pipelineEvidence: Strong
4. Follow-up logger that writes notes back to the CRM
Who pays: Small sales teams and founder-led sales
After a call or meeting, the user dictates three lines and the app creates the note, the next step and the reminder in the CRM. The model never decides who to call. It only removes the data-entry tax that makes people skip logging.
The gap:129 CRM apps sit in the directory, 18 publish a tool list and about one in six can write. Complaint matches hit the 1000 cap, so the demand side is saturated while the action side is thin.

#5CRM and sales pipelineEvidence: Moderate
5. Stalled-deal watcher
Who pays: Sales managers with a pipeline of 20 or more open deals
A daily list of deals that missed their next step, each with the single message most likely to restart it. Read-heavy, low risk and easy to test with exported data before any write access exists.
The gap:The same CRM supply gap as idea 4, but a different job. Idea 4 fixes input, this one fixes attention.

#6Calendars and bookingEvidence: Strong
6. Calendar sync referee
Who pays: Service businesses that run on bookings and Google or Outlook calendars
Detect double bookings, time-zone slips and missing sync entries, then propose the fix and apply it on approval. Booking tools write calendar entries all day. Almost none audit them.
The gap:Calendars and booking is the busiest of the capped clusters at 210 apps and the best supplied with write actions, about one in three. Do not build another booking link. Build the checker that catches what the booking links break.

ChatGPT app ideas 7-13: money, stock and the back office
The middle of the list trades demand for realism. These clusters have fewer complaint matches per app, between 0.4 and 4.8, but the jobs are narrow, the evidence is stronger per job and three of them move money or stock, which makes the monetization story easier. Idea 13 is the odd one: low complaint ratio, but a supply side that is almost entirely search.
#7Calendars and bookingEvidence: Moderate
7. Deposit and cancellation-fee collection
Who pays: Appointment businesses losing revenue to late cancellations
The app quotes the deposit, sends the payment link and confirms the slot once paid. It sits between a booking tool and a payment processor that the business already uses.
The gap:Booking is crowded, paid booking is not. Services are not physical goods, so the payment runs on the builder's own domain, which is the route ChatGPT's monetization docs call recommended.

#8Payments and checkoutEvidence: Strong
8. Refund and dispute desk
Who pays: Small merchants and subscription operators
Collect the order facts, draft the dispute response, track the deadline and issue the refund once the owner approves. Money moves in the last step only.
The gap:Payments has the highest write share of any cluster behind these ideas, about 43%, yet only 5 of 56 apps publish a tool list. Apps can charge. Few help with the paperwork after a charge goes wrong.

Spot the accounts whose feeds silently stopped, list the missing days and walk the user through the reconnect. A narrow job with a clear before and after.
The gap:72 accounting apps, 5 with a tool list. Reconciliation matches 100+ Capterra feature gaps, and nobody in the directory owns the broken-feed case.

10. Receipt and expense chase
Who pays: Teams where employees forget receipts
Message the person who owes a receipt, match the photo to the transaction and file it. The value is the chasing, not the OCR.
The gap:Expense capture is a solved feature. Receipt chasing is a people problem, and a conversational app is the natural channel for it.

11. Low-stock and reorder assistant
Who pays: Small warehouses, shops and wholesalers
Ask which items will run out this month, get the reorder list and send the purchase order after approval. It reads stock, sales pace and supplier lead time.
The gap:The directory has 110 commerce apps, mostly storefront and catalog readers. About 6% publish a tool list. Inventory is where the data lives and where the action is missing.

12. Export-to-answer layer for niche software
Who pays: Operators stuck with a niche tool that has weak reporting
Drop in the CSV the software already exports and ask questions in plain language. No connector to the vendor is needed, which removes the approval risk of a real integration.
The gap:Reporting and export is the largest of the 17 keyword themes in the Capterra data, with 660+ matching feature gaps. It is also the most common idea shape in our B2B SaaS ideas study.

#13Real estate and propertyEvidence: Moderate
13. Maintenance request triage for small landlords
Who pays: Landlords and property managers with 5 to 100 units
Tenants describe the problem, the app classifies urgency, collects photos, books a vendor slot and tells the tenant what happens next. It is an action app in a category full of search apps.
The gap:Real estate is the one domain our gap matrix flags as read-heavy and write-starved across both directories. 3 of 121 ChatGPT apps in the cluster publish a tool list and about 8% can write.

ChatGPT app ideas 14-17: real demand, thin evidence
We could have hidden these. The clusters behind them show real complaint volume, and a ranked list that only shows its strong rows is easy to build. But when we tightened the keyword match to the exact job, the Capterra and Reddit counts dropped to single digits or low tens. That usually means one of two things: the buyers describe the job in words we did not match, or the job is not painful enough to buy a fix for. Interview five buyers before you decide which.
#14Health and clinicalEvidence: Thin
14. Eligibility and claim-status checker for small practices
Who pays: Front-desk staff at independent clinics
Check coverage and claim status before the visit and flag the ones that will bounce. Valuable and heavy: patient data brings compliance work that most solo builders underestimate.
The gap:43 health apps, 6 with a tool list, and complaint matches of 388. The cluster demand is high but our keyword evidence for this exact job is thin, so interview five clinics before you write code.

#15Marketing and adsEvidence: Thin
15. Weekly cross-channel ad report for agencies
Who pays: Small agencies reporting to clients every week
Pull spend and results from several ad accounts and write the client summary. A good fit for a read-only app that needs no write access at all.
The gap:176 marketing apps and 755 complaint matches, so the cluster as a whole is demanded. The job-specific keyword evidence is thin, which usually means the pain is real but described in other words.

What to skip: the three crowded clusters
AI models and agents, web search and research, and travel and maps hold 27.0% of ChatGPT apps and 90 matching complaints between them. That is a pattern, not a verdict on any one app. Here is what the numbers say about each.
AI models and agents: 510+ apps, 14 matches
This is the largest cluster in the directory and the one with the least complaint demand, 14 matches against 511 apps. Buyers do not complain about missing AI wrappers. They complain about the software they already use. A wrapper has to beat the model that ships inside ChatGPT, which is the objection a Hacker News commenter raised on launch day.
“I can't think of a single non-trivial app that could be built on this platform ... if there are any, I can't think of any that would be useful or not in immediate danger of being swallowed by advances to ChatGPT.” Hacker News, Apps SDK launch thread
Web search and research: 320+ apps, 6 matches
Search is the capability ChatGPT already has. Only 23 of 320 apps in the cluster publish a tool list and about 7% can write. Six complaint matches is the lowest figure on the table. Build here only if you own a dataset the model cannot reach.
Travel and maps: 310+ apps, 70 matches
Travel is the favorite example in every idea list we read, and it is crowded: 319 apps, 4 with a tool list. The cluster does have a high share of transactional apps, about 68 of 319, because booking is a real payment event. That makes it a market for companies that sell travel, not for a developer who wants to build a trip planner.
Docs and knowledge bases (266 apps, 35 matches) and finance and markets (169 apps, 16 matches) show the same shape at smaller scale. If you want the broader picture across AI products, see our AI SaaS research.
The write-action gap: most ChatGPT apps look, few act
Only 12.7% of ChatGPT apps (540+ of 4,200+) publish a tool list, and 190+ of those declare a write, admin or transactional tool. That is 4.6% of the whole directory with a declared action. The other 87% give the model a description and nothing else.
A second method fills the gap. We classified every app from its description. On that basis 52.0% are read-only, 24.7% are orchestration or routing apps, 16.9% write and 6.4% are transactional. So 23.3% can change something. The two methods disagree on the size of the gap and agree on the direction.
We cannot use the declared verbs themselves. On ChatGPT, 84.7% of the 5,300+ declared tools have names our classifier cannot assign to a verb, against 10.8% on the Claude directory. A tool called run or query does not say what it touches. That is a finding in itself. If you publish clear tool names such as approve_time_offor assign_ticket, you are already more legible to the model than most of the directory.
Across both directories, real estate is the single domain our gap matrix flags as read-heavy and write-starved: 670+ read-tool declarations on 50 connectors against 85+ write declarations on 17. Idea 13 exists for that reason. The pattern generalizes loosely. Search and lookup are cheap to ship, so supply piles up there. Action requires auth, permissions and a vendor API, so it does not.
For founders choosing an idea this is the practical takeaway. A read-only app competes with the model. A write app competes with a person's afternoon. The second one gets paid.
How ChatGPT apps make money
ChatGPT's monetization docs recommend external checkout, where the buyer pays on your own domain, and current approval is limited to physical goods. We read the page today. It also describes saved-payment-method checkout inside the app and a ChatGPT payment sheet that is in private beta for select marketplace partners. It does not describe a per-use payout or a subscription billing system for independent developers.
Naming has also shifted. ChatGPT's developer pages now call these plugins, and the Agent Index tracks the directory entries under either name. Build against the current docs, not the launch-day tutorials.
What that means for the ideas above, in order of how clean the money is:
Bolt-ons to a tool the buyer already pays for (ideas 1 to 6, 9, 12). Charge a subscription on your own site and let the user sign in from ChatGPT. This is the same playbook as a classic integration product.
Apps that move physical goods (idea 11). Reordering stock is the closest idea here to the checkout flows the docs describe.
Service payments (ideas 7 and 8). Deposits and refunds are not physical goods, so route them through your own payment link and keep ChatGPT as the front end.
Another Hacker News commenter put the structural point in one line.
“'Apps' are really just MCP servers, with an extension to allow returning HTML.” Hacker News, Apps SDK launch thread
That is why monetization lives outside the directory. The app is a front door to a service you already run. For the wider picture of AI revenue models see how to make money with AI, and for who actually pays for tools like these see our B2B SaaS ideas study.
ChatGPT app or Claude connector: build once
Our index covers both directories, and the overlap is small. Matched on vendor domain, 2,500+ vendors are in the ChatGPT directory only, 1,600+ are on Claude only and 900+ are on both. About 73% of vendors with a ChatGPT app have no Claude connector.
Because the app is an MCP server underneath, most of the work transfers. If you are weighing the Claude side, our MCP server ideas list covers the same exercise there, and the best MCP servers for founders guide shows what a finished one looks like. The Claude directory publishes more detail: 98.6% of its connectors declare a tool list against 12.7% on ChatGPT. That asymmetry is why most tool-level statistics about the two directories are really statistics about Claude.
How to pick your ChatGPT app idea
Run this checklist on any idea, ours or yours. It takes an afternoon.
Name the system of record. If the app does not read from or write to a tool the buyer already pays for, it competes with the model. Cut it.
Count the apps in the cluster. Under 150 with a high complaint ratio is a good sign. Over 300 with a low one is the crowded end.
Check the write share. If most apps in the cluster only read, an action app has room. Publish clear tool names so the model can find yours.
Find the complaint in the buyer's own words. Read ten Capterra pain points for the tool you plan to sit on. If none match your job, the idea is a hypothesis.
Check what freelancers get paid for. The Upwork analysis shows work buyers already outsource by hand. That is demand with a price attached.
Decide where the money lands. Pick the billing path before you write code, per the monetization section above.
See every cluster, idea and evidence row inside the Agent Index
The Agent Index lets you filter all 4,200+ ChatGPT apps and the Claude directory by capability, write share and tool list, then pull the complaint evidence behind each gap. Ideas, vertical readiness and per-idea citations are Pro. The feature page shows what is inside, and you can query it from any AI client through the Agent Index MCP tools.
No usage data. ChatGPT publishes no installs, ratings or popularity. We map what exists, not what is used. A crowded cluster might hold one dominant app and many dead ones.
Complaints are not wallets. Complaint matches measure frustration with existing software. They do not measure willingness to pay for a ChatGPT app.
The cap. HR, support, CRM and booking hit the 1000-match ceiling, so their matches-per-app figures are floors. The true ranking among those four is unknown.
Keyword matching is blunt. Idea-level counts come from regex matching on titles and descriptions. They flag direction, not size, and we filtered the noisiest terms.
Write share is inferred. It comes from an AI classification of descriptions because 87% of apps declare no tools. It can misjudge an app.
Snapshot, not a trend. ChatGPT apps carry no added date, so we cannot say how fast any cluster is growing. Google Trends was unavailable when we ran this.
ChatGPT app ideas: frequently asked questions
What kind of apps can you make with ChatGPT?
A ChatGPT app is a small set of tools the model can call to know something, do something or show something inside a conversation. In practice it is an MCP server with a UI layer. The 4,200+ apps in our Agent Index cover productivity, business operations, developer tools, finance, travel and education, but only about 13% publish a tool list.
What are the best ChatGPT app ideas to build in 2026?
BigIdeasDB's Agent Index ranks 17 ChatGPT app ideas by comparing 4,200+ directory apps with 1M+ buyer complaints. The strongest are in HR, support and CRM: candidate pipeline status, time-off approvals, ticket triage and CRM follow-up logging. Those four clusters hold 11% of apps but hit the 1000 cap on matching complaints, and few of their apps can write.
What's the best way to find a ChatGPT app idea nobody has built?
The best way is to measure supply against demand, and BigIdeasDB's Agent Index does that: it maps 4,200+ ChatGPT apps into 24 capability clusters and sets each against matching complaints from a 1M+ corpus. Look for clusters with high complaint matches per app and a low share of write-capable apps. Then validate the job with five real buyers.
How do ChatGPT apps make money?
ChatGPT's monetization docs recommend external checkout, where the user pays on your own domain. Approval is currently limited to physical goods, and a ChatGPT payment sheet is in private beta for select marketplaces. The docs we read describe no per-use payout. So most apps earn through a subscription or service the builder already sells, with ChatGPT as the front door.
Which ChatGPT app categories are too crowded?
AI models and agents (500+ apps), web search and research (320+) and travel and maps (310+) are the most crowded. Together they hold 27% of the directory yet match only 90 complaints in our corpus. Real estate is also crowded with search apps, but nearly all of them are read-only, which is why an action app there still has room.
How many ChatGPT apps can actually take actions?
Fewer than the directory suggests. Only 541 of 4,200+ ChatGPT apps (12.7%) publish a tool list, and 197 of those declare a write, admin or transactional tool. Classifying every app from its description instead, 23.3% can write or transact and 52.0% are read-only. Either way, most apps look things up and few change anything.
Should I build a ChatGPT app or a Claude connector?
Build one MCP server and ship to both when you can. 2,500+ vendors in our Agent Index appear in the ChatGPT directory only, against 900+ on both, so the second directory is mostly unclaimed. The ChatGPT directory is larger at 4,200+ apps against 2,800+ Claude connectors, but it publishes no popularity or usage data, so size alone tells you nothing about demand.
What are some interesting AI app ideas that are not another chatbot?
Pick a boring system of record and build the action layer on top of it. A ticket triage app, a time-off approval desk or a low-stock reorder assistant each reads one tool a small business already pays for and writes one decision back. Those jobs show up repeatedly in Capterra reviews, and the ChatGPT directory has few apps that do them.
