Ask the questions your buyers ask, in fresh chats, on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and log who gets named. Our own tracker shows why one check proves nothing.
To track whether ChatGPT recommends your brand, write 10 to 20 buyer questions that do not contain your name, ask each one in a fresh chat on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and log every brand named and every source cited. Repeat weekly. According to BigIdeasDB's AI answer tracker (409 answers, October to November 2026), the same prompt returned cited domains that overlapped only 0.19 between runs.
The best way is the one you will repeat every week. For a small prompt set, a manual log is enough. Automation earns its cost when you need many prompts, many weeks and a count by question. Here is the ranking.
| Rank | Method | Best for | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | BigIdeasDB Desktop (AI Answers Lab) | Asking your own AI your buyer questions on your own computer, counting which brands it names by question and over time. One-time purchase, no subscription | Counts one AI's replies, and replies can differ day to day. It does not replace checking each engine yourself |
| 2 | A spreadsheet with a fixed prompt set | 10 to 20 prompts, weekly, free. You see the raw answers and sources | Manual. Gets slow past about 20 prompts and 3 engines |
| 3 | ChatGPT itself, in a fresh logged-out chat | A first look at how it answers your category question | A single answer. Memory and personalization can skew a logged-in chat |
| 4 | Google AI Mode itself | Seeing which links Google shows for the same question | Different engine, different sources. Do not blend with ChatGPT |
| 5 | A "how did you hear about us" field with ChatGPT as an option | Proof that AI answers send real buyers | Tells you outcomes, not which prompt or position |
A practitioner in an r/aeo thread (53 comments as of November 7, 2026) put the rhythm this way: "Weekly is the sweet spot in my experience. Monthly is too slow because answers drift, and daily is mostly noise." Our data agrees with the drift part.
Swap the bracketed words for your category. Keep the wording fixed after the first run, so weekly results are comparable.

One row per answer. Paste this into a spreadsheet. The columns below separate being named from being cited, which are different events.
| Date | Engine | Prompt # | Run # | Brand named | Position | Domain cited | Competitors named | Sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-11-07 | ChatGPT | 1 | 1 | No | n/a | No | Brand X; Brand Y | reddit.com; example.org |
| 2026-11-07 | Google AI Mode | 1 | 1 | Yes | 3 of 5 | Yes | Brand X; Brand Z | your-site.com; reddit.com |
| 2026-11-14 | ChatGPT | 1 | 2 | Yes | 4 of 4 | No | Brand Y | example.org |
Three summary numbers matter: your appearance rate (answers where you are named, divided by all answers), your citation rate and your share among named brands. A buyer may see you named but never cited, or cited but never named. Treat them as separate lines.
Named means the answer text mentions your brand, for example in a list of recommendations. Cited means the answer links to a page on your domain as a source. You can be named without a cited page, and you can be cited without being named. A third state, recommended, means the answer picks you as a good fit, not just lists you.
Track all three. Named shows awareness. Cited shows which of your pages the engine trusts. Recommended is the one closest to a sale. In our tracker, 243 of 409 answers (59%) named no brand at all, and 64 cited no domain, so a blank row is a normal result, not a bug in your log.
The same prompt on the same engine returns different brands and sources from run to run. Our tracker asked the same prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode up to four times between October 18 and November 6, 2026. The last two runs of a prompt shared an average of 0.19 of their cited domains, and 27 of 69 pairs shared none.
Brand lists drift too. Among the 39 prompt and engine pairs where at least one of the last two runs named a brand, the set of named brands changed in 27 (69%). One prompt asking for alternatives to a well-known idea tool produced three different brand lists across four runs: one name, then two, then five, then two.
The prompt itself matters more than the day. Tool prompts, such as "best tools to validate a startup idea", named no brand in 25 of 113 answers (22%). Open idea prompts, such as "give me micro SaaS ideas for 2026", named none in 120 of 132 (91%). If your prompts ask for ideas or advice, expect to be absent no matter what you do. Prompts that ask for tools, comparisons or alternatives are where brands get named.
The two engines also disagree with each other. Across 164 same-day pairs of identical prompts, only 19% (31 pairs) shared even one cited domain, and the mean overlap was 0.04. Google documents why: AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches, and "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary."
Reddit stands out. It appeared in 51 of 207 Google AI Mode answers (25%) and 23 of 202 ChatGPT answers (11%). YouTube showed up in 15 Google AI Mode answers and none from ChatGPT. This is our category, business ideas and startup research. Your category may lean on different sources, which is exactly what your sources column will tell you.
ChatGPT writes its answer from the model plus, when it searches, live web results. OpenAI's help center says that when ChatGPT search uses search providers, it typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries, and that it ranks results using multiple factors with placement not guaranteed. It also says citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
Two details matter for tracking. First, a rewritten query means the same question can pull different pages on different runs. Second, saved memories can be used when ChatGPT rewrites a query, which is why you test in a fresh, logged-out chat. For crawl access, OpenAI says to allow OAI-SearchBot and to confirm your host or CDN allows its published IP addresses (source: OpenAI Help Center, "Searching the web with ChatGPT", fetched November 7, 2026).
For Google AI Mode, Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Foundational SEO still applies (source: Google Search Central, "AI features and your website", fetched November 7, 2026). Neither company publishes a recipe for being recommended, so be wary of anyone selling one.
You cannot buy a placement, but you can show up where the answers look. Use your sources column from the log. Our data points to three levers.
Then re-run your prompt set and watch the appearance rate over several weeks. A r/aeo commenter suggested keeping a separate funnel view, "mention, recommendation, selection, signup or revenue", because a rising mention rate can look great while nothing changes commercially. Add ChatGPT as an option in your "how did you hear about us" field to close that loop.
A spreadsheet is enough for 10 to 20 prompts, weekly, on two engines. That is about 60 to 120 answers a month to ask, read and log by hand. The pain starts when you want more prompts, more repeats per prompt or a clean trend line.
BigIdeasDB Desktop has an AI Answers Lab for that step. It asks your own AI your buyer questions, on your own computer, and counts which brands it names, by question and over time. It uses the AI you already have rather than a hosted scoring service, and the evidence stays in a local project. Desktop is a one-time purchase with no membership. The price rises $1 with every sale, and the current price is on the Desktop pricing page. Our lifetime Basic and Pro plans include it. Setup steps are in the Desktop help guide.
Two honest limits. The Lab counts one AI's replies, and a single AI can answer differently from one day to the next, so repeat your questions and read trends, not single runs. And it reads the AI you connect, so check ChatGPT and Google AI Mode directly for the engine-specific views in this guide. The same Desktop app also collects Reddit, review and trend evidence, covered in our AI market research agent guide.

| Item | Detail | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Sample | 409 successful answers: 202 ChatGPT, 207 Google AI Mode, across 93 prompts | Our own category: business ideas, buying a business and startup research tools. Not universal rates |
| Runs | 4 dated runs. Most prompts asked 2 to 4 times per engine | Not all prompts ran on every date, so repeat pairs use each prompt's last two runs |
| No-brand share | Answers whose named-brand list was empty, 243 of 409 | A brand list is what the tracker extracted from the answer text |
| Domain overlap | Jaccard between cited-domain sets of the last two runs; 69 pairs where both runs cited a domain | The tracker stores the top cited domains, not every link |
| Brand list change | Set of named brands not identical across the last two runs, among 39 pairs where at least one run named a brand | Small n per engine (20 and 19). Read as direction |
| Cross-engine | 164 same-day pairs of the same prompt, ChatGPT vs Google AI Mode; 31 shared at least one cited domain | Captured through a tracker, so your own logged-in session may differ |
Perplexity answers from the first run are excluded, so the engine comparison covers ChatGPT and Google AI Mode only. These numbers show how the engines behave on our prompts. They do not tell you your own appearance rate. Only your own prompt set can.
Write 10 to 20 unbranded buyer questions, such as the best tool for your job or alternatives in your category. Ask each in a fresh logged-out chat, record whether your brand is named, cited or ranked, and repeat weekly for at least three runs. Answers vary, so track the share of runs where you appear, not one result.
Use a spreadsheet. List your prompts in rows, add columns for date, engine, brand named (yes or no), position, competitors named and sources cited, then fill it in by hand once a week. It is free, works for up to about 20 prompts and takes under an hour per run. Past that, automate the asking and keep the log.
BigIdeasDB Desktop is the best low-cost starting point. Its AI Answers Lab asks your own AI your buyer questions on your own computer, counts which brands it names by question and over time, and is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. A spreadsheet, ChatGPT itself and Google AI Mode itself are the free alternatives for small prompt sets.
The best way is a fixed prompt set run repeatedly, not a single question. BigIdeasDB's AI answer tracker found that 59% of 409 answers named no brand and that cited domains overlapped only 0.19 between runs of the same prompt. Repeat each prompt three or more times and log named, cited and position separately.
When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI says it rewrites your question into targeted queries, sends them to search providers and ranks results using multiple factors, with placement not guaranteed. It then writes an answer, often with citations. In our data, tool and comparison prompts named brands far more often than open idea prompts.
Be on the pages ChatGPT already cites for your buyer questions: comparison pages, directories, community threads and your own pages that state plainly what you do. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, as OpenAI documents. Then re-run your prompt set weekly. No one can guarantee placement, and our data shows the cited sources change from run to run.
Yes. In 164 same-day pairs of identical prompts, only 19% shared even one cited domain, and the mean overlap was 0.04. Google AI Mode cited reddit.com in 25% of its answers against 11% for ChatGPT. Track each engine as its own channel, never as one blended visibility score.
Weekly is a practical rhythm. Daily checks mostly capture noise, because the same prompt returns different brands and sources from run to run. Monthly checks are too slow to see a change you made. Run the same fixed prompt set once a week, keep a dated log, and judge trends over several weeks.
