The best businesses to start in Alberta, priced against 410+ Alberta businesses for sale
Every list for this search names the same ten ideas. None says what an Alberta business actually earns once it works. We priced them: 410+ Alberta businesses for sale, cross-checked against Statistics Canada counts of new employer businesses.
The short answer
The best business to start in Alberta is a service business: a trade, cleaning, renovation, personal care or professional service. Alberta service businesses for sale state a median C$157,700 of owner earnings (SDE) on a C$450,000 asking price; food and retail storefronts at the same price state C$124,858 (BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, 120+ Alberta listings stating both, October 2026). Service models are also the cheapest to open: a Calgary cleaning or contractor licence costs C$330 new.
Demand is there. Alberta’s count of employer businesses rose 1.2% in the year to June 2026 while Canada’s rose 0.1% (Statistics Canada table 33-10-0270-01), with the fastest growth in health care, cleaning and support services, food services, retail and construction. If you would rather buy than build, the median Alberta business stating earnings asks C$527,499 for C$169,512 of SDE, 3.24x.
The pages that rank for this search list ideas: pet daycare, cleaning, delivery, lawn care, a food truck. That is a fine place to start thinking. It does not tell you what any of those businesses makes in Alberta once it works. This page uses the Main Street Index, BigIdeasDB’s census of 84,900+ businesses-for-sale listings. 1,800+ of them are Canadian, and 410+ are in Alberta. A listing for an existing business is the best public record of what a business model earns after the start-up years, so we use it to rank models, then price what it costs to start each one.
Every figure from a listing is an asking price or a stated earnings figure, not a sale price or an audited number. SDE (seller’s discretionary earnings) is profit plus the owner’s own pay, the number a buyer lives on. Our guide to starting a business in Canada covers registration and GST; this page covers which business to pick.
The shortlist: six Alberta businesses worth starting or buying
These six are ranked on what our data and the official sources can support: earnings of the business model in Alberta listings, the cost to start, and whether Statistics Canada shows the industry adding businesses in Alberta. Counts under 30 are shown as counts, never as medians.
- Commercial and residential cleaning. Lowest start cost on the list: a Calgary cleaning licence is C$330 new and C$248 to renew, WCB janitorial coverage is C$2.30 per C$100 of payroll, and the work can run from home. Administrative and support services, the Statistics Canada industry that includes cleaning, grew 2.2% in Alberta in a year against 0.8% nationally. Seven Alberta cleaning companies are listed for sale at a median C$234,000. Our cleaning business profitability study has the national earnings.
- Renovation and handyman work. Construction added 2.0% more employer businesses in Alberta in a year (Canada 0.4%). Small jobs are under-served: one Calgary resident wrote that larger firms “are generally too busy for smaller jobs.” Seven home-improvement businesses are listed at a median C$200,000, and an Edmonton interior renovation franchise resale on another Canadian marketplace states C$350,000 of cash flow on a C$660,000 ask.
- Lawn care plus snow clearing. One crew, two seasons. WCB lawn maintenance is C$1.84 per C$100 of payroll and landscaping C$1.91. A commercial-duty 28-inch two-stage snow blower lists at C$3,879. Read our landscaping business guide before you buy trucks.
- Auto repair (buy, do not start). 13 Alberta auto repair shops are listed at a median C$525,000, and 11 of them state earnings, an unusually high disclosure rate. Equipment and bays make this a purchase, not a start. Equipment-heavy Alberta businesses state C$360,000 of median SDE. Our auto repair shop guide covers the checks.
- HVAC and plumbing (buy if you hold the ticket). Nine Alberta HVAC businesses are listed at a median C$775,000, seven of them stating earnings. Licensed trades are where an owner retiring hands over a client list you could not build quickly; 54.4% of Alberta sellers who give a reason are retiring.
- Fast food franchise resale (buy with care). The cheapest way into food: 28 Alberta fast food and takeaway listings ask a median C$250,000, and 18 of them are franchise resales. Food storefronts state the lowest earnings in this study, so model the franchise fees before you sign. See franchise vs independent.
“Retail is pretty much out. Any trade. (electric, garage door, construction) would be the best bet.”r/Calgary, on the most needed small businesses
Service businesses earn more than storefronts at the same price
At almost the same median asking price, about C$450,000, Alberta service businesses state 26% more owner earnings than food and retail storefronts: C$157,700 against C$124,858 (Main Street Index, 65+ and 50+ Alberta listings stating ask and SDE, October 2026). They also keep more of each dollar of revenue, a median SDE margin of 23.9% against 18.3%.
No single Alberta sector has 30 listings that state both price and earnings, so we pooled sectors into three business models and disclose the grouping: service (home and trade, business and professional, personal care, consumer services, education and childcare, technology, health), storefront (food and beverage, retail) and equipment-heavy (automotive and transport, manufacturing, construction and property).
| Business model | Listings | Median SDE | Median ask | Ask / SDE | SDE margin | Clears 1.25x | With ask + SDE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Service | 155+ | C$157,700 | C$449,997 | 3.18x | 23.9% | 53.6% | 65+ |
| Food and retail storefront | 155+ | C$124,858 | C$450,000 | 3.22x | 18.3% | 38.9% | 50+ |
| Equipment-heavy | 80+ | C$360,000 | C$1,200,000 | 3.60x | 20.9% | 73.0% | 35+ |
| All Alberta | 410+ | C$169,512 | C$527,499 | 3.24x | - | 53.0% | 160+ |
The loan column is the practical difference. In our illustrative test, a median Alberta storefront does not cover a CAD 80,000 owner salary plus its loan (median coverage 0.93x), and only 38.9% clear the 1.25x bar lenders like. Service businesses clear it 53.6% of the time. Equipment-heavy businesses clear it most often, 73.0%, because their earnings are large enough to absorb a salary, but they ask C$1.2 million.
Is the service premium an Alberta quirk? No. It shows up in every province we can measure: Ontario service businesses state C$199,719 against C$157,000 for storefronts, and the rest of Canada C$227,475 against C$178,000. What is specific to Alberta is the floor. Alberta storefronts state the lowest median earnings of any Canadian storefront group with 30+ listings, C$124,858, against C$157,000 in Ontario and C$178,000 across the provinces outside Alberta, Ontario and BC (BC has too few to measure). The next section shows one reason.
“We make 50 cents on a 4L jug when we sell it for $9.40 and that’s not counting the electricity cost for the fridge or spoilage.”r/Calgary, a gas station owner's family
What Alberta businesses are for sale, by sector
Food and beverage is the largest Alberta sector for sale, with 95+ listings and a median ask of C$399,000, followed by retail (55+, C$250,000) and home and trade services (55+, C$399,997) (Main Street Index, October 2026). Sector-level earnings medians are withheld because no Alberta sector has 30 listings stating both price and SDE. The table shows supply, price, the share that are franchise resales and the share run from home.
| # | Sector | Model | Listings | Priced | Median ask | Franchise resale | Home-based |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Food and beverage | Storefront | 95+ | 90+ | C$399,000 | 42.4% | 3% |

| 3 | Home and trade services | Service | 55+ | 50+ | C$399,997 | 7.3% | 32.7% |
| 4 | Automotive and transport | Equipment-heavy | 35+ | 30+ | C$770,000 | 0% | 8.6% |

| 9 | Leisure, hospitality and events | Other | 15+ | 15+ | C$773,500 | 0% | 15.8% |
| 10 | Consumer services | Service | 15+ | 10+ | C$212,000 | 5.9% | 17.6% |
| 11 | Construction and property | Equipment-heavy | 15+ | 10+ | C$1,575,000 | 0% | 0% |
Showing 11 of 11. Source: BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, de-duplicated Alberta listings quoted in CAD, verified October 10, 2026. Median ask uses priced listings. Asking figures stated by sellers, not closed deals. Education and childcare (7 listings) and technology and media (4) are omitted from the table.
Two things stand out. Home and trade services are the most home-based sector (18 of 55 listings, 32.7%), which is the clearest sign that the work can start from a truck and a phone. And the expensive sectors are the ones with property and machinery: construction and property asks a median C$1,575,000, manufacturing C$1,350,000. Our home service business ideas page covers the service models in more depth, and the most profitable small businesses ranks them across North America.
Alberta’s food market is franchise country
42.4% of Alberta food and beverage businesses for sale are franchise resales, against 33.0% in Ontario and 17.9% in British Columbia (Main Street Index, 40+ of 95+ Alberta food listings, October 2026). Outside food, the three provinces are close, at 8% to 10%. If you picture opening an independent cafe or restaurant in Alberta, much of the competition you will meet is a branded unit.
We re-cut it by industry before trusting it. The gap with Ontario is not fast food, where both provinces are mostly franchise (18 of 28 Alberta listings, 14 of 20 in Ontario). It is sit-down restaurants (10 of 30 in Alberta against 5 of 24 in Ontario and 3 of 40 in BC) and cafes (5 of 7 against 2 of 8 and 2 of 22), plus a larger share of fast food in the Alberta mix. These cells are small, so read them as a pattern, not a precise rate.
Franchise resales also say less. 33% of Alberta franchise listings state SDE, against 43% of independent ones, which is why we cannot publish a franchise earnings median for the province. Ask for the unit’s own statements, the royalty and marketing fee schedule and the franchisor’s transfer fee before you compare it with an independent. Our restaurant buying guide adds the rent test.
Where Alberta is adding businesses
Alberta had 124,174 active employer businesses in June 2026, 1,478 more than a year earlier, a 1.2% rise. Canada as a whole added 622 (+0.1%), Ontario lost 1,767 (-0.5%) and British Columbia was flat (Statistics Canada, table 33-10-0270-01, seasonally adjusted). In net terms, Alberta added more employer businesses than the whole country did.
| Industry (NAICS) | Alberta businesses | Alberta 1-yr change | Canada 1-yr change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health care and social assistance | 14,213 | +4.8% | +3.2% |
| Administrative and support (incl. cleaning, landscaping) | 5,370 | +2.2% | +0.8% |
| Accommodation and food services | 7,931 | +2.1% | +1.6% |
| Retail trade | 10,427 | +2.1% | -0.5% |
| Construction | 16,876 | +2.0% | +0.4% |
| Other services (repair, personal care) | 9,976 | +1.6% | +0.9% |
| Professional, scientific and technical | 17,635 | -0.5% | 0.0% |
| Transportation and warehousing | 6,025 | -1.8% | -4.4% |
| Mining, quarrying, oil and gas | 2,648 | -2.9% | +0.2% |
| All business sector industries | 124,174 | +1.2% | +0.1% |
Put the two sources side by side and the picture is consistent. The industries adding businesses fastest, health care, support services, construction and repair, are the service models that state the best earnings in the listing data. Retail and food are adding businesses too, but into the model with the thinnest earnings and the most franchise competition. The oilfield-support idea that shows up in many idea lists runs against the count: Alberta oil and gas businesses fell 2.9% while Canada’s were flat.
One caution on these counts: they cover businesses with at least one employee. A sole proprietor cleaning houses alone does not appear until the first hire, so the true growth in one-person service starts is likely higher than the table shows.
What C$100K, C$250K and C$500K buy in Alberta
Owner earnings rise with price, but so does the multiple. Alberta businesses asking C$100,000 to C$250,000 state a median C$70,148 of SDE at 2.80x; those asking over C$1 million state C$585,335 at 3.66x (Main Street Index, 30+ to 45+ listings with earnings per band, October 2026). The cheapest band has the most franchises and home-based businesses, and almost no stated earnings.
| Asking price | Priced listings | State SDE | Median SDE | Ask / SDE | Home-based | Franchise resales |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to C$100K | 25+ | 3 | withheld | withheld | 15 | 8 |
| C$100K to C$250K | 90+ | 30+ | C$70,148 | 2.80x | 14 | 25+ |
| C$250K to C$500K | 75+ | 40+ | C$133,000 | 2.86x | 9 | 15+ |
| C$500K to C$1M | 70+ | 40+ | C$183,922 | 3.41x | 3 | 10+ |
| Over C$1M | 80+ | 45+ | C$585,335 | 3.66x | 6 | 3 |
With C$100,000, you have two honest options. Start a service business and keep most of it as working capital, or use it as a down payment. BDC’s rule of thumb is 20% to 30% down, so C$100,000 can anchor a purchase of roughly C$330,000 to C$500,000, which in Alberta buys a business stating around C$133,000 of SDE. Buying outright at C$100,000 or less mostly gets you a home-based business or a franchise territory with no stated earnings: 15 of the 25+ listings in that band are home-based and only 3 state SDE.
With C$250,000 to C$500,000, the lowest multiples in the province (2.80x to 2.86x) sit right here. That is the band to search if you want to buy income rather than build it. Our businesses by budget guide shows the same bands across North America, and seller financing covers how to stretch the down payment: 10.1% of Alberta listings say the owner will carry part of the price, a floor because most listings do not say.
What it costs to start a service business in Alberta
For a home-based service business in Calgary, the city licence starts at the C$172 base fee, because the fire inspection and planning fees do not apply to home-based businesses; you also need a Home Occupation permit, priced on a separate planning schedule (City of Calgary 2026 Business Licence Fee Schedule). Commercial premises cost more. These are the published figures we could verify.
| Business | Calgary licence, new / renewal | WCB rate per C$100 payroll |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning service | C$330 / C$248 | C$2.30 |
| Contractor (renovation, trades) | C$330 / C$248 | C$3.81 (painting) |
| Lawn maintenance, landscaping | C$330 / C$248 (contractor) | C$1.84 to C$1.91 |
| Personal service (salon, barber) | C$285 / C$200 | - |
| Independent chair operator | C$172 / C$131 | - |
| Motor vehicle repair | C$330 / C$248 | C$2.01 |
| Restaurant (food service, premises) | C$330 / C$248 | C$0.91 |
| Food truck (full service food vehicle) | C$953 / C$790 | C$0.91 |
| Day home or day care | varies | C$1.30 |
WCB matters once you hire. A cleaning company paying C$60,000 in wages pays about C$1,380 a year in WCB premiums at C$2.30; a painting crew on the same payroll pays about C$2,286. The province’s average rate is C$1.46. Edmonton sets its licence fee by the highest of five category tiers, so price yours on the city’s schedule once staff assign your categories.
Equipment is where start budgets drift. A commercial-duty 28-inch two-stage snow blower lists at C$3,879 before tax, and a truck is the real cost of any route business. Our cost to start a business guide breaks down the rest, and low-cost business ideas ranks the cheapest models.
“As much as the local work for the farmers and the people in my very immediate community... its just not enough work for me to dive right in and do it full time.”r/alberta, a heavy-duty mechanic starting a mobile repair service
That is the real cost of starting, and no fee schedule shows it: the months before referrals fill the calendar. A business coach in the same thread put it plainly:
“Your work will likely be generated through referrals for a while.”r/alberta, a business coach
Calgary vs Edmonton
Calgary-area businesses for sale state a median C$159,562 of SDE at 3.29x; Edmonton-area businesses C$133,000 at 3.06x (Main Street Index, 45+ listings stating SDE in each, October 2026). Calgary listings are cheaper to enter on price, a median ask of C$349,000 against C$399,997 in the Edmonton area, because more of them are small. Both metros are growing faster than Alberta: Calgary had 47,486 active employer businesses in June 2026, up 1.9% in a year and 9.9% since 2019; Edmonton had 40,277, up 2.1% and 6.7% (Statistics Canada, table 33-10-0270-01).
A note on method: the marketplace behind our Canadian data does not tag the city, so we assigned a listing to Calgary or Edmonton when its location, headline or description names the city or a neighbouring town (Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere; St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Fort Saskatchewan). About half of Alberta listings name neither, and those skew larger (median ask C$557,500), which is consistent with rural and industrial businesses that keep their location confidential.
In practice, choose the city where you already have a network. For a referral-driven service business, the first ten customers come from people who know you, and that matters more than a C$26,000 difference in median SDE.
Start it or buy it?
An Alberta business that states its earnings asks a median 3.24x SDE, so buying C$169,512 of owner income costs about C$527,499 before closing costs (Main Street Index, 160+ listings, October 2026). We checked that figure against 40 more Alberta listings scraped from two other Canadian business-for-sale marketplaces; adding the 12 of them that state cash flow left the median multiple at 3.24x. Starting the same service business costs a licence and equipment, plus the years it takes to reach that income.
- Start it if you hold the trade skill, the business can run from home or a truck, and you can live on low income for a year while referrals build. Cleaning, renovation, lawn and snow, and personal services fit.
- Buy it if the business needs bays, licences or a client book you cannot build fast: auto repair, HVAC, plumbing, a liquor store. 54.4% of Alberta sellers who give a reason are retiring, and our guide to retiring owners in Canada shows how to approach them.
- Be careful buying a food or retail storefront. Alberta storefronts state C$124,858 of median SDE, the median one does not cover a CAD 80,000 salary plus a loan, and 42.4% of food listings are franchise resales with fees on top.
Our buy vs start comparison works through the trade-off in full, and the small business valuation guide explains why the multiple is the number to anchor on. For the purchase process in Canada, including financing and the GST election, read buying a business in Canada. That page reports Alberta’s median ask across all priced listings (C$432,500, above Ontario); this page uses listings that state earnings, where Alberta is cheaper than Ontario (C$527,499 against C$700,000) because the earning businesses are smaller.
Alberta tax and support for a new business
Alberta taxes small business income at 2% on the first C$500,000 of active business income, for 11% combined with the 9% federal rate, and its general corporate rate of 8% is the lowest of any province (alberta.ca, October 2026). Customers pay 5% GST and no provincial sales tax, which simplifies pricing and bookkeeping for a new service business.
- Business Link Alberta offers free one-to-one business guidance, a Business Launch Program and market research.
- Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant: 50% of training costs up to C$5,000 per existing employee, or 75% up to C$10,000 for unemployed Albertans. This is the “$5,000 grant” people search for; it pays for training, not for starting.
- Futurpreneur lends up to C$75,000 to founders aged 18 to 39, and Community Futures runs 27 offices that lend to rural businesses.
- Alberta Manufacturing Productivity Grant: up to C$30,000 in matching funds for small and mid-sized manufacturers.
The 2026 tourism levy rose to 6% on temporary accommodation from April 1, which matters if you are weighing a short-term rental or a lodge. Every listing figure here is what sellers ask and state, from 410+ Alberta listings; none is a verified sale (Main Street Index, October 2026). Six limits matter:
- Existing businesses, not start-ups. A listing shows what a model earns once it works. It says nothing about how many start-ups never reach that point.
- One marketplace. All our Canadian listings come from a single national marketplace. A scrape of two other marketplaces found 53% of their Alberta listings were already in our data, and the 40 new ones did not move the province median.
- Small sectors. No Alberta sector reaches 30 listings with price and earnings, so earnings are shown only for pooled business models that we defined and disclose.
- Asking, not closing. Final prices are usually lower, and stated SDE is unaudited.
- City tags are inferred from text, and half of listings name no city.
- Statistics Canada counts cover employer businesses only, and the loan test is an illustration, not a lender quote.
Methodology and data sources
We kept Main Street Index listings in Alberta quoted in Canadian dollars, with cross-site duplicates removed: 410+ listings, 350+ with an asking price and 160+ stating both price and SDE, read with read-only SQL and verified October 10, 2026. Sectors come from our industry layer; the three business models pool those sectors as described above. Every figure is a median; any cut under 30 listings is shown only as a count. One templated opener repeats on three listings for a window-cleaning franchise; we kept them, and they do not move any median shown.
For a coverage check we scraped the Alberta pages of two other Canadian business-for-sale marketplaces on October 10, 2026: 87 unique listings, of which 46 matched a Main Street listing on price and headline and 40 were new. A third marketplace failed to load. Statistics Canada figures come from the full table 33-10-0270-01 download, reference month June 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best business to start in Alberta?
On the numbers, a service business. Alberta service businesses for sale (trades, cleaning, personal care, professional services) state a median C$157,700 of owner earnings (SDE) on a C$450,000 asking price, against C$124,858 for food and retail storefronts at the same price (BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, 120+ Alberta listings stating both, October 2026). Service models are also the cheapest to start: a Calgary cleaning or contractor licence is C$330 new, and a home-based business skips the fire and planning fees.
What is the most profitable business in Alberta?
Among Alberta businesses for sale, equipment-heavy firms (auto repair, trucking, manufacturing, construction) state the highest median owner earnings, C$360,000, but ask C$1.2 million. Per dollar of revenue, service businesses keep the most: a median 23.9% SDE margin against 18.3% for food and retail (Main Street Index, 45+ to 70+ listings per group). Profit depends on the operator more than the category, so read these as medians, not promises.
What businesses can I start with $100,000 in Canada?
In Alberta, C$100,000 buys a low-capital service start with room to spare, or a down payment. Priced Alberta businesses asking C$100,000 to C$250,000 state a median C$70,148 of owner earnings at 2.80x (30+ listings with earnings, October 2026), and BDC's rule of thumb is a 20% to 30% down payment, so C$100,000 can anchor a purchase of roughly C$330,000 to C$500,000 with financing. Below C$100,000, more than half of Alberta listings are home-based and almost none state earnings.
Is $5000 enough to start a business?
For some Alberta service businesses, yes. A new Calgary cleaning service licence is C$330 (C$172 base if home-based, which skips the fire and planning fees, plus a Home Occupation permit), Alberta has no provincial sales tax to register for, and WCB coverage for janitorial work costs C$2.30 per C$100 of payroll once you hire. Equipment is the swing cost: one commercial-duty two-stage snow blower lists at C$3,879. A storefront or food business will not open on C$5,000.
