Business ideas in Canada: 20 ideas, what each costs to start and what it earns

Idea lists tell you what to start. They rarely say what the business earns, what it costs, or what a Canadian seller asks for the same thing once it works. This list does, by budget.

The short answer

Short answer

The best business ideas in Canada depend on your budget. Under C$5,000: bookkeeping, tutoring, domestic cleaning, handyman work and pet services. From C$5,000 to C$25,000: commercial cleaning, painting, landscaping with snow removal, and pressure washing. Above that, a vehicle, a licence or premises is the cost, and buying a working business often beats building one (BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, 1,800+ Canadian listings, verified October 29, 2026).

The finding only our data shows: Canadian sellers ask 3.21 years of owner earnings for a business, against 2.62 in the US. The gap survives matching by sector, by earnings size and by marketplace. It makes building relatively cheaper than buying, and it is why home-based Canadian businesses, which keep a 33.3% margin, are the starting point for most budgets.

Most lists for this search give 15 to 30 ideas with a start-up cost in words and a rate guide for earnings. They do not say what a Canadian owner actually keeps, how many such businesses exist, or what they sell for. That is what this page measures. It uses the Main Street Index, BigIdeasDB’s census of 84,000+ businesses for sale, of which 1,800+ are Canadian listings priced in Canadian dollars. For the ranking of whole sectors, see our study of the best business to start in Canada. This page is the ideas list: what to start, at what budget, with what it earns.

Two terms carry the page. SDE (seller’s discretionary earnings) is profit plus the owner’s own pay: what one owner-operator lives on. The asking multiple is asking price divided by SDE, in years of earnings. Every figure is an asking price or a stated earnings figure, never a closed sale. For wider ideas outside Canada, see our guide to business ideas, plus small business ideas and home business ideas.

“If such a thing existed, everyone and their dog would already be doing it, driving the margins down to zero as per normal market dynamics.”r/smallbusiness, replying to a request for profitable Canadian business ideas

That commenter has a point about secret ideas, and it is why this page does not promise one. The ideas below are not secret. What is scarce is knowing which ones pay and what they cost. Another reply in the same thread says it shortly: “The ideas are the easy part.”

The 20 ideas at a glance

Filter by start-up cost tier, or sort by earnings, margin or how many Canadian businesses of that type are for sale. Earnings, margin and multiple are US reference figures from 100+ to 1,300+ listings per industry, because no Canadian industry has 30 listings with earnings. Canadian columns show how many are listed for sale.

Showing 20 of 20. Source: BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, verified October 29, 2026. US reference = US listings in USD on an SDE basis (n of 30+ with price and earnings). Canadian columns count de-duplicated Canadian listings classified to the same industry (CAD); Canadian medians are withheld because every industry has fewer than 30 listings with earnings. SDE includes the owner's own pay. Margin = SDE over stated revenue. Tiers are our classification by the equipment each model needs, not quotes. Asking figures, not closed deals.

Three patterns jump out. Margin and price disagree: bookkeeping keeps 50% of revenue but needs no assets, while childcare is priced at 3.61x because licensed capacity is scarce. Supply is lopsided: 42 Canadian cafes and 40 auto repair shops are listed, against 7 bookkeeping practices and 7 marketing agencies. The cheap ideas are home-based: 10 of 12 domestic cleaning businesses and 11 of 16 e-commerce businesses for sale state home-based.

Canadian sellers ask more years of earnings than US sellers

Across 600+ Canadian listings with an asking price and stated SDE, the median asking multiple is 3.21x. Across 27,000+ US listings it is 2.62x (Main Street Index, October 2026). Each multiple is a ratio inside its own currency, so we compare ratios and never pool Canadian and US dollars. A 0.6-year gap, about 23%, is large enough to ask whether Canada simply lists different businesses. We tested that four ways.

  1. Same sector. Canada asks as much or more in all 8 sectors with enough data, and 0.47 to 1.16 years more in six of them. Health and medical (+1.16) and home and trade services (+1.01) lead. Manufacturing is level at 3.34x against 3.33x.
  2. Same sector mix. Weighting the US sector medians by how many Canadian listings sit in each sector, a US portfolio shaped like Canada’s asks 2.68x, against 3.21x. Mix explains about 0.06 of the 0.59 gap.
  3. Same earnings size. Canada is higher in every earnings band. See the table below.
  4. Same marketplace family. All our Canadian listings come from the same international marketplace network as one of our two US sources. The US listings from that network ask 2.54x; the US total is 2.62x. Removing franchise adverts and listings that include real estate leaves 3.08x for Canada (480+ listings) and 2.48x for the US.

What it means for someone picking an idea: a business bought in Canada costs about half a year of earnings more than the same business would in the US, so the case for building a low-capital service is stronger here. If you build one and later list it, the Canadian market is asking more for it. What it does not mean: that Canadian businesses are worth more. These are asking prices, many never close, and our data cannot say why sellers ask more. Thinner supply in a smaller market and different pricing habits are candidates we cannot test. Our guide to buying a business in Canada breaks the multiples down further, and buy vs start a business covers the general decision.

Business ideas by budget: what C$1,000, C$5,000, C$10,000 and C$100,000 reach

Canadian searchers ask for four budgets: $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $100,000. The honest answer changes at each one, because the cost moves from tools to vehicles to premises. The table groups the 20 ideas by what has to be paid for before the first client. The tiers are our classification, and the fixed costs are the ones we could verify.

$1,000. You can afford insurance and the tools you already own. That fits a service you sell before you spend: bookkeeping, tutoring, domestic cleaning, handyman work or pet care. A Vancouver commenter put the other side bluntly:

“5K is really not much money to start a business.”r/askvan, on starting a business with $5,000

It is not much for a cafe or a truck. It is enough for the first tier, which is where the evidence points anyway. $5,000 to $10,000 adds equipment: the same thread’s most practical answer was a kit rather than a store: “Pressure washer. Leaf blower. Ladder.” $100,000 changes the question. It can start a service with months of runway or put a down payment on a listed business, and our businesses by budget guide runs both. The best business to start in Canada study tests the C$100K option against a loan.

If you would rather buy, this is what the Canadian market holds by asking price. The cheapest businesses are often home-based, and the earnings behind them are too thin to publish.

160+ listings ask C$100,000 or less, and half of them state home-based. 480+ ask C$250,000 or less, and 40+ of those offer seller financing. Under C$100K almost nobody states earnings, so ask for two years of tax returns before anything else, and run the asking price through our business price checker.

The 20 ideas, with what each costs and earns

Each card shows the US reference earnings for that industry, how many Canadian businesses of that type are for sale, and how many state home-based. The US figures rest on 100+ to 1,300+ listings per industry, so they are the best available economics, not a Canadian forecast. Where a Canadian number appears it is a count, never a median. Ideas run from cheapest to start to most expensive. For the broader idea set outside Canada see low-cost business ideas and small business ideas.

#1Under C$5K

1. Bookkeeping and accounting

Every list starts here because it needs a laptop and a client. The margin is a solo-practitioner figure: SDE includes the owner's own pay, so 50% of revenue is what one person keeps for their own hours. The Canadian catch is the exit. Only 7 bookkeeping or accounting practices are listed for sale in Canada, against 115 restaurants, so practices rarely come to market and you would sell a client book by arrangement. Professional liability cover for accounting and IT runs C$700 to C$2,400 a year.

2. Digital marketing and social media

US owners ask 3.1 years of earnings for a marketing business, more than for cleaning or maintenance, which fits a model built on repeating retainers. That is the idea inside the idea: sell a monthly retainer, not one-off projects. A 30% margin on stated revenue leaves room to hire. Only 7 Canadian marketing businesses are listed, 2 of them home-based, so the market for buying one is thin and building is the realistic route.

There is no benchmark for AI consulting on its own, so the nearest category, IT services, stands in and is labelled as such. Our 1,800+ Canadian listings include only 4 IT or management consultancies. Read that as an income business, not yet a sellable asset: you sell hours and outcomes to local firms, and the exit market is close to empty. Dog walking, sitting and grooming share one trait: owners pay for convenience every week. The 31.4% margin is higher than cleaning or handyman work. Income per owner is modest (US$90,263 median SDE), so the Canadian route to more is a second walker or a mobile grooming van, not longer days.

A r/smallbusiness reply to a Canadian ideas request listed exactly three jobs: lawn mowing, snow removal and pressure washing. US$204,813 median SDE at 2.50x, with 695 US listings behind it. No lease, no fit-out and no staffed floor are what the margin is paying for.

Home-based is not evenly spread. 37.4% of home and trade services listings state it, and 64.6% of technology and media listings (48 listings), against 2.9% in food and beverage. So the from-home list is cleaning, trades, bookkeeping, tutoring, e-commerce and consulting. We cover the discount home-based businesses take when sold in our study of the best business to start in Canada, and the US version in home-based business ideas.

Seasonal and winter business ideas in Canada

120+ of our 1,800+ Canadian listings mention seasonal demand, and 30+ mention snow. That is the pattern a Canadian starter should plan around: the season sets cash flow before the idea does. Two ways to work with it. Pick ideas that run all year: bookkeeping, tutoring, commercial cleaning, indoor painting, home care and handyman work do not stop in January. Or pair a summer service with a winter one: landscaping and lawn care with snow removal, which is exactly how the landscaping and snow idea works. 9 of the 1,800+ listings explicitly mention plowing.

One illustration of how much weather shapes supply: in the US, pool services are among the most common home trades (430+ listings), while only 2 are listed in Canada. We cannot prove the climate is the cause, but a business that earns for half the year needs a second line to be a living. Food trucks and moving are in the same position: the first test of either is whether you can book January work.

What is the most profitable business in Canada?

By margin, business and professional services: the median Canadian listing keeps 34.1% of revenue as owner earnings, on C$220,000 of SDE. Retail keeps 15.7% and food and beverage 18.2%. By absolute earnings construction and property states the most, C$488,161, but it asks C$1.49M and is not a first business. Margin matters more than size for a start: at 15% a business needs about C$670,000 of sales to leave C$100,000 of earnings, at 34% about C$290,000.

Nothing in the table makes a business safe. High margin is where the owner’s own pay is large, and the ideas above that win on margin, such as bookkeeping and consulting, are also the ones with the fewest Canadian buyers.

Which business is best for the next five years?

No dataset can name it, and any list that claims to is guessing. The evidence supports traits instead. Work that cannot be deferred: home repair, care and cleaning keep paying when budgets tighten, and the highest-margin Canadian sectors are service sectors. Earnings that survive without you: our Canada study found home-based businesses ask about 25% less per dollar of earnings than similar businesses with premises, which is the market discounting owner dependence. Staying power: federal data shows 67.5% of new service businesses and 69.7% of goods businesses are still operating after five years, and 47.2% and 52.0% after ten (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Key Small Business Statistics 2025). Roughly half do not reach year ten, which is why durability is a feature to design in, not assume.

Our business success rate study shows what separates survivors, and AI-proof businesses to buy covers which trades software cannot replace. For entry and exit rates by industry in Canada, see the sector churn section of the best business to start in Canada study.

That is the limiting belief most idea lists leave untouched, so test it. 1,800+ Canadian businesses are listed for sale, the median states C$207,000 of owner earnings, and 600+ of them state both a price and earnings. People do make money here. The question is which model, at what price, with how much supply.

Where in Canada: ideas by province

Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta hold 1,500+ of the 1,800+ Canadian listings. Their asking multiples sit close together, 3.07x to 3.24x, with Ontario the lowest on the largest supply. Smaller provinces are withheld: Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick and the territories have fewer than 30 listings with both price and earnings, and Quebec has 27.

Provincial detail lives in our province studies: Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. 10.1% of all Canadian listings state seller financing is offered, with the highest share among the provinces we can read in Ontario (11.4%) and the lowest in Nova Scotia (5.6%). If an owner is retiring, buying from a retiring owner in Canada covers what that does to the price.

Funding, and the $40,000 small business loan

The $40,000 loan people search for was the Canada Emergency Business Account. It lent eligible businesses $40,000 interest-free, later up to $60,000, between April 9, 2020 and June 30, 2021, and approved loans to roughly 898,000 businesses. It is closed. Loans still outstanding carry 5% interest, with the full principal due on December 31, 2026 (CEBA program page, modified May 2026). If you hold one, talk to your lender now.

For a new business, the program to know is the Canada Small Business Financing Program. It shares risk with banks and credit unions rather than lending directly. Businesses with revenue of C$10 million or less can borrow up to C$1,000,000 in term loans (no more than C$500,000 of that for equipment and leasehold improvements) and up to C$150,000 on a line of credit, with a C$1.15 million ceiling per borrower. Rates are capped at the lender’s prime plus 3% (floating), and there is a 2% registration fee. The lender, not the government, decides whether you qualify (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada). Commercial vehicles and equipment, the costs that define the C$25K-and-up tiers above, are what its term loans can finance.

Registering your business: the short version

You can start as a sole proprietor under your own name, with no incorporation, and register a business name if you trade under another. Incorporating federally costs C$200 online (Corporations Canada). You must register for GST/HST once taxable revenue passes C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, or in a single quarter (Canada Revenue Agency). Provincial licences vary by trade and province. Our step-by-step guide on how to start a business in Canada covers registration, tax and the province differences, and how much it costs to start a business itemises the rest.

How to test any of these ideas before you spend

  1. Count the supply. Search the Canadian listings for your idea. Seven listings means buyers are scarce. Forty means a market.
  2. Read the earnings, not the headline. Compare your target margin with the card above, and remember SDE includes your own pay.
  3. Price it. If you plan to buy, our business price checker compares an asking price with its industry.
  4. Sell before you spend. Book two paying customers, then buy tools. Our business idea evaluator and startup cost calculator check the plan on paper first.
  5. Choose by skill and by budget tier. The business idea generator writes five ideas from your skills, and the help guide on how to brainstorm business ideas shows the method.

One reply in the same Canadian thread tells the asker to ask a chatbot. A chatbot can brainstorm, but it cannot tell you what 1,800+ Canadian owners state they earn. Use the BigIdeasDB MCP server to ask Claude questions against the live listings, or work from buying a business with the Main Street Index.

What this page cannot tell you

  • Canadian per-idea earnings. No Canadian industry has 30 listings with price and earnings. Per-idea earnings are US reference figures. Canadian numbers on the cards are counts.
  • Asking, not closing. Prices are asks and earnings are stated by the seller. Some businesses never sell. We do not say any business is undervalued or overpriced.
  • Survivor bias. Businesses for sale are businesses that lasted. Failed ideas are not listed, which is why we pair the data with federal survival statistics.
  • Start-up costs. Only registration, insurance and loan terms are sourced. Equipment and vehicle costs depend on your province and choices, so the tiers are our classification.
  • One marketplace family in Canada. All Canadian listings come from one marketplace network. The Canada premium holds against the same network in the US (3.21x vs 2.54x), but a source we do not see could differ.
  • Why the premium exists. The data shows that Canadian sellers ask more. It cannot say why.

Business ideas in Canada: frequently asked questions

Which business is most profitable in Canada?

By margin, business and professional services: the median Canadian listing keeps 34.1% of revenue as owner earnings, against 15.7% for retail and 18.2% for food and beverage (Main Street Index, 45+ to 85+ listings per sector, October 2026). By absolute earnings, construction and property states the most. Margins include the owner's own pay, so compare them with your hours.

What is the best business to start with $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 in Canada?

A service you can sell before you spend: bookkeeping, tutoring, domestic cleaning, handyman work or pet care. Fixed costs are small, with online federal incorporation at C$200 and a basic C$2M liability policy from about C$450 a year. At C$10,000, add a pressure-washing or lawn rig. US reference margins for these services run 23% to 31% of revenue, except bookkeeping at 50%.

What business can I start in Canada with no money?

Sell skill, not stock: bookkeeping, tutoring, consulting or handyman work, billed before any spending. You can operate as a sole proprietor, and GST/HST registration is only required once revenue passes C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters (Canada Revenue Agency). Home-based Canadian businesses state a 33.3% median margin once established (Main Street Index, 68 listings, October 2026).

Which business is best for the next five years in Canada?

No honest list can name one. The evidence supports traits instead: work people cannot defer, such as home repair, care and cleaning, and earnings that survive without you. Home and trade services keep a 23.9% margin and business services 34.1%, against 15.7% for retail. Federal data shows 67.5% of new service businesses reach year five and 47.2% reach year ten (ISED, 2025).

What are the best business ideas in Canada from home?

Cleaning, bookkeeping, tutoring, handyman work, e-commerce and consulting. 14.5% of Canadian listings state they are home-based, and those with earnings state a median C$129,000 on a 33.3% margin, against 21.4% for businesses with premises (Main Street Index, 67 and 539 listings, October 2026). Home-based is most common in technology (64.6% of listings) and home and trade services (37.4%).

What is the $40,000 small business loan in Canada?

It was the Canada Emergency Business Account: an interest-free loan of $40,000, later raised to $60,000, open from April 9, 2020 to June 30, 2021. It no longer takes applications. Loans still outstanding carry 5% interest, with the full principal due December 31, 2026 (CEBA program page). New borrowers use the Canada Small Business Financing Program, which backs term loans up to C$1,000,000.

What's the best website to find business ideas in Canada?

BigIdeasDB, because it shows what Canadian businesses earn and ask instead of only listing ideas. Its Main Street Index holds 1,800+ Canadian businesses for sale inside 84,000+ listings, with owner earnings, asking multiples and home-based flags. Its free business idea generator writes five ideas from your skills, with no signup.

Can AI give me a good business idea for Canada?

It can give you a list, and most AI lists read alike because they draw on generic articles, not Canadian earnings. Use AI to brainstorm, then test each idea against data: what similar Canadian businesses earn, what they ask and how many exist. BigIdeasDB's free generator turns your skills into five ideas, and the Main Street Index supplies the numbers to check them, including inside ChatGPT or Claude through the BigIdeasDB MCP server.

What's the best AI tool for business ideas?

BigIdeasDB, because its ideas rest on data a general chatbot lacks: 84,000+ businesses for sale with stated earnings and 1M+ documented complaints. The free business idea generator needs no signup, and the BigIdeasDB MCP server connects to ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor, so either assistant can search the Main Street Index and answer from real listings instead of memory.

Is AI consulting a good business in Canada?

It is a good way to earn, not yet a proven asset to sell. Our 1,800+ Canadian listings include only 4 IT or management consultancies, and the nearest US reference (IT services, 107 listings) states a 28.7% margin and a 3.53x asking multiple. Start with one narrow offer for one trade, and expect to build income before you build something a buyer would pay for.

What are the top 10 small businesses in Canada?

The strongest low-cost ten, judged on what the nearest US industry earns, are bookkeeping, painting, handyman work, pressure washing and property maintenance, landscaping with snow removal, commercial cleaning, digital marketing, moving, tutoring and domestic cleaning. US reference owner earnings run $90K to $221K on 23% to 50% margins (100+ to 600+ listings per industry, Main Street Index, October 2026). Canada has no matching figures, only counts.

What business can I start in Canada with $100K?

At C$100,000 you can fund a vehicle-based service such as moving, senior home care or an HVAC or trades start-up, with months of runway. Or you can buy: 160+ Canadian listings ask C$100,000 or less and 480+ ask C$250,000 or less (Main Street Index, October 2026). Below C$100K almost none state earnings, so request two years of tax returns first.

What are unique business ideas in Canada?

Ideas shaped by the climate: landscaping paired with snow removal, since 30+ of 1,800+ Canadian listings mention snow and 120+ mention seasonal demand. Pressure washing and moving are others to test. Also pet services and food trucks, which need a January plan. Pool service is common in the US (430+ listings) but nearly absent here, with 2 listed in Canada.

What are good business ideas in Canada for women?

The same ideas work for anyone, so pick by hours and capital: bookkeeping, tutoring, pet services, domestic cleaning, e-commerce and senior home care. Home-based Canadian businesses state a 33.3% median margin once established (68 listings, Main Street Index, October 2026), which suits flexible schedules. Our business ideas for women guide goes deeper on the best-fit picks.

Which business is most profitable in Canada from home?

Among home-based Canadian listings with stated earnings, the median business states C$129,000 of owner earnings on a 33.3% margin (67 and 68 listings, Main Street Index, October 2026). Technology and media is the most home-based sector (64.6% of its listings), then home and trade services (37.4%). Margins include the owner's own pay, so judge them against your hours.

What are good startup ideas for Canada?

Start with service startups, because they need little capital and the evidence favours them. Business and professional services keep a 34.1% median margin in Canadian listings (45 listings), against 15.7% for retail. Bookkeeping, marketing, tutoring and AI consulting need a laptop and insurance. Software startups are slower: see our startup ideas page for the problems worth solving.

Bookkeeping, tutoring, domestic cleaning, handyman work, pet services, marketing and consulting, all under about C$5,000. Fixed costs we verified are C$200 for online federal incorporation, optional for a sole proprietor, and C$450 to C$900 a year of liability cover for consultants and online businesses (Corporations Canada; Ontario brokerage guide, 2026). Your labour is the main cost.

Do I need to register a business to start one in Canada?

You can start as a sole proprietor without incorporating, though most provinces require registering a business name. GST/HST registration becomes mandatory once your revenue passes C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters (Canada Revenue Agency). Federal incorporation online costs C$200. Many service ideas on this page can start under a sole proprietorship and incorporate later.
