Home based business ideas, ranked by what home-based businesses actually earn

Every list of home business ideas names skills. None shows what a home-based business earns, costs or sells for. We screened 4,200+ US home-based businesses for sale and ranked the ones with real books.

The short answer

Short answer

The best home-based businesses are pool service, commercial cleaning, landscaping and building maintenance: the four industries with the most home-based businesses for sale, stating $81K to $181K of median owner earnings (SDE) at margins of 30% to 78% (Main Street Index, 4,200+ screened US home-based listings, October 2026). For the highest margin look at pool routes (77.9%), software (61.2%) and food trucks (56.3%). For the most dollars, look at painting, plumbing and trucking, each stating $238K to $259K.

The finding the lists miss: a business run from home sells for about 23% less per dollar of earnings than the same industry run from premises, and keeps about 9 points more of its revenue. Pool routes ask 0.96x their earnings against 2.84x for other pool businesses. Our data also carries a warning. One listing in five flagged home-based is a copy of other listings, mostly delivery routes and franchise adverts, so any ranking built on the raw flag is wrong.

Prices here are asking prices and earnings are stated by sellers, from the Main Street Index, BigIdeasDB’s census of 84,900+ businesses-for-sale listings. We kept US listings in dollars and removed duplicates and look-alikes. Every median carries its n, and any cut under 30 listings is withheld.

What every list of home business ideas leaves out

The pages that rank for this search are The Hartford (40 ideas), Entrepreneur (73), US Chamber (10), Forbes (8), Inc (25 for under $1,000), Coursera and Oberlo. All are lists of skills: virtual assistant, freelance writer, social media manager, tutor, reseller. They answer “what could I do” and stop. None says what a home-based business earns, what one costs to buy, or whether running from home changes the economics (Google results and a People Also Ask pull, October 2026).

The searcher is asking for numbers. The questions Google attaches to this search are “How can I make $10,000 a month from home?”, “Which home-based business is most profitable?”, “How can I make an extra $2000 a month from home?” and “What business makes $1000 a day?”. Each one is an earnings question, and each is answered below from listings, not from a ranking of skills.

The Reddit thread that Google ranks fourth for the head term shows what the community says instead. It is a couple on a large lot asking for ideas, and the replies are a mix of advice and one-line suggestions.

“Best advice I can say is to look at the needs of your community and find a way to serve those needs.”r/smallbusiness, replying to a couple asking for home business ideas
“Making stickers, cups, or tshirts for small businesses is what I would recommend. Always needed by someone”r/smallbusiness
“I build simple websites and sell the leads to local business owners. In the US alone there are 3000 niches and over 3000 cities. I earn about $250 - $1,250 per website.”r/smallbusiness

Those are real, and some will work. But they are anecdotes with no denominator: nobody says how many people tried stickers and stopped. A business that has been listed for sale has an owner who states revenue, earnings and an asking price. It is the closest public evidence of what a home-based business can be worth, which is what the rest of this page measures.

28 home-based business ideas ranked by what they earn

28 industries have 30 or more US home-based listings that state both a price and owner earnings, after we remove look-alikes and listings that include real estate (Main Street Index, 1,800+ listings, October 2026). The table sorts by how many home-based businesses are for sale by default; use the sort buttons for earnings, margin or price. The last four columns put each industry next to the same industry’s businesses that are not flagged home-based, so you can see what working from home does to the price and the margin.

Showing 28 of 28. Source: BigIdeasDB Main Street Index, US listings in USD on an SDE basis, cross-site duplicates, templated look-alikes and real-estate-included listings removed, verified October 11, 2026. Asking figures stated by sellers, not closed deals. Home-based n = priced listings flagged home-based; "not home" = same industry, not flagged (n from 30 to 590). Ask gap = home-based multiple versus the same industry's other multiple. Margin = SDE as a share of revenue where revenue is stated.

Read the table from the left. The “n” column says how many listings stand behind the row; it is the supply you can actually buy from, and it is why pool service (207 listings) is a better-evidenced idea than toy and hobby retail (30). The earnings column is what the owner says the business throws off before their own pay. The multiple is asking price divided by that number, so a 1.40x means the price equals 1.4 years of stated earnings. Our guide to valuing a small business explains why the multiple is the number to anchor on, and the business price checker runs any listing through it.

Two things stand out. First, 1,100+ of the 1,800+ listings in this table, 64.8%, sit in home and trade services: pool, cleaning, landscaping, maintenance, painting, plumbing, HVAC, roofing. Online businesses are 210+, or 11.7%. Second, the home-based column is cheaper than the neighbouring column in 27 of 28 rows. Only pet services reverse it, at 2.72x against 2.61x.

The look-alike trap: one home-based listing in five is a copy

Before ranking anything we screened for templated listings, because the raw home-based flag is badly polluted. We group listings whose opening description is identical once numbers are stripped; any group of three or more is a family. 1,000+ of the 5,300+ US home-based listings (20.0%) sit in a family, against 4.5% of listings not flagged home-based (Main Street Index, October 2026). The same listing text, repeated, is not 1,000 businesses.

Three families do most of the damage. A broker package for delivery routes (“the asking price for all routes including vehicles is... in outright cash plus... in estimated vehicle financing”) covers 240+ listings, 228 of them flagged home-based. FedEx Ground and linehaul route listings add 70+ more. And franchise adverts on one marketplace repeat the same franchise text per territory: glass repair (49), roofing (42), tutoring and first-aid training (40), fire prevention (26). They state an investment, not earnings.

The effect on a ranking is large. Before the screen, courier and delivery is the single biggest home-based industry, with 398 listings and a $437K median SDE. After it, 39 priced listings remain, at $320K. It still earns the most dollars, but it is a fleet-contract business with a $1M ask, not a home business idea. If you want to buy one, our FedEx route guide covers it separately.

The screen also explains two oddities in the raw data. Glazing shows a median home-based ask of $15,000 (65 priced listings) because most of them are franchise adverts with no stated earnings; the 17 glazing businesses that state earnings ask a median $429,999. And the home-based “restaurant” bucket (86 listings) is storefront restaurants and bistros with a premises tag error, so it fails the 30-listing floor and is left out. Both are disclosed rather than hidden because anyone who pulls the raw flag will find them.

Home-based businesses ask 23% less and keep 9 points more

Does running from home change the economics? We tested it directly. For each priced home-based listing we found the median multiple and margin of businesses in the same industry and the same earnings band (under $100K, $100K to $250K, $250K and up) that are not flagged home-based, then compared. Across 2,300+ listings in 106 industries, home-based listings ask a median 0.77 of their peers’ multiple, and 68.9% of them (1,600+ of 2,300+) ask less than the peer median. Their margin is 9.1 points higher (Main Street Index, October 2026).

The gap survives every cut we tried. It does not depend on size, franchise resales or the three industries that dominate the home-based count. It is also the same size as the gap we measured in Canada, where home-based listings ask 0.75 of their peers (see the best business to start in Canada). On margin, two industries buck the pattern: home care agencies and courier routes run about a point below their peers. On price, pet services is the only industry that asks more.

Why would the market pay less? Part of it is what the business is. A home-based business is tied to its owner, has no premises to anchor a lease, and is easy for a buyer to copy by starting their own. A buyer is paying for customers and a method, not a location. The margin gap has a mechanical piece too: there is no rent line, so more of each dollar reaches the owner. We cannot separate those from the seller-stated margin, which is why we show margin as a comparison and not as a promise.

The practical read for a buyer is that a home-based business is the cheaper way to buy earnings. For a would-be founder it cuts the other way: if the resale market values these businesses lower, the exit is smaller, so the case for starting one rests on income, not on a sale. Our buy vs start guide covers that choice. 24.9% of the screened home-based listings state that the seller will finance part of the price, against 20.7% of other listings, but most listings say nothing either way, so treat both as floors (seller financing guide).

Which home-based business is most profitable?

It depends on whether you count percent or dollars. By margin, the leaders among the 28 industries are pool service routes at 77.9% of revenue (n=201), software at 61.2% (n=37), food trucks and vending at 56.3% (n=111), publishing and media at 50.0% (n=32) and marketing and advertising at 45.4% (n=45). By owner earnings, the leaders are courier and delivery at $320K, then painting and trucking at $259K each, plumbing at $238K and roofing at $237K (Main Street Index, October 2026).

The two lists barely overlap, and that is the point. High-margin businesses are small: a pool route states $81K of earnings, so the margin is high because the revenue is low. High-earnings businesses are crews and fleets: trucking and painting come with employees, vehicles and licences, at 24.5% and 30.0% margins. A profit-per-hour view would favour the routes. A “how much does it make” view favours the trades.

Pool service is the standout. After the screen it is the largest home-based industry, it has the highest margin and it asks 0.96x its earnings, against 2.84x for pool businesses that are not run from home. Our pool route guide explains why: a route is a list of customers with a truck, not a shop. Cleaning and landscaping are the next most common, and they are well documented in the cleaning profit study and landscaping guide. For a wider ranking, see the most profitable small businesses.

What $2,000, $10,000 and $1,000 a day cost

The questions Google attaches to this search are income targets, so we cut the home-based set into the bands those targets imply. Owner earnings (SDE) are before the owner’s own pay and before debt, so they are a ceiling for what you could take home, not a salary. The table shows what the market asks for each level among the 2,800+ screened home-based businesses with stated earnings and a price.

Three readings follow. $10,000 a month is $120K of owner earnings, and 58.5% of the priced home-based set states at least that. The median business in the $120K to $365K band asks $350,000 at 1.86x, which is cheaper per dollar than the smaller bands. Anything under $60K of earnings costs more per dollar (2.27x), and the multiple falls as earnings rise up to $365K.

$1,000 a day is about $365K a year. 12.4% of priced home-based listings state it, with a median ask of $1,400,000 at 2.77x, and they are the deals least likely to be a single person at a desk: courier routes, building maintenance, software and trucking lead the group. $2,000 a month sits in the first band, where the median business asks $78,750, which is why it is usually built, not bought. See our full page on what business makes $1,000 a day for the wider market.

“I’m not looking for passive income or “buy an index fund” advice. I’m looking to build an actual business.”r/smallbusiness, an 18-year-old asking what to build

That poster has $2,000 and four to six hours a day and wants about $5,000 a month in one to two years. The listing data says what the target costs to buy: the median under-$60K business asks $78,750. The route from $2,000 to $5,000 a month is therefore a build, which our cost to start a business guide prices, not a purchase.

One-person businesses from home

“1 man business ideas from home” is a related search, so we cut the same set by stated employees. 1,800+ of the screened priced home-based listings state a headcount, and 440+ state one employee or none: 90 in the under-$60K band, 144 in $60K to $120K, 174 in $120K to $365K and 38 above that (Main Street Index, October 2026). A solo owner can therefore sit at $120K to $365K of stated earnings, but they are a minority of that band.

No single industry has 30 solo listings, so we do not rank solo industries. The largest groups are landscaping (33 solo listings, median $127K SDE), commercial cleaning (22, $89K), home improvement (19, $233K), plumbing (18, $355K) and food trucks and vending (22, $78K). Treat those as ranges, not medians. The consistent pattern is that solo home-based businesses are trades and routes with local, repeat customers. The full treatment is in business ideas with no employees.

Only 18.8% of screened home-based listings carry a stated “relocatable” flag, against 2.3% of other listings. Home-based and portable are not the same property, so check whether the customers or the address are what you are buying before you move a business to a new town.

Skills versus businesses: what the lists recommend and what sells

Most of the SERP is skill-led: virtual assistant, freelance writing, social media management, online tutoring, bookkeeping. Those are real ways to earn from home, but they are mostly sold as time. They rarely become an asset a buyer would pay for, so they are almost absent from our data. What does sell is a customer list with a process attached: a route, a crew, a contract book, an e-commerce store, a small agency.

Among the 28 industries, online businesses are 210+ of 1,800+ listings, 11.7%. Within that group, marketing and advertising asks $517,500 for $166K of earnings (45.4% margin, n=45), e-commerce asks $189,500 for $107K (n=56) and software asks $1,250,000 for $211K (n=41). Software asks 3.97x, the highest multiple in the table, and marketing and e-commerce sit mid-table at 2.65x and 2.20x. A buyer pays more for earnings that do not depend on a vehicle or a licence. Software, publishing and marketing are also three of the five highest margins.

“I sell life and health insurance from home. Like all over the phone (no video). Some choose to do video/zoom/Google meet).”r/smallbusiness

That quote is a good example of the gap. Selling insurance by phone is a real income, but it is a commission stream attached to a licence and a person, so it never appears as a business for sale. Skills can still be a way in. Bookkeeping, for example, is on every home list and has a thin resale market. We cover what it sells for in buy a boring business, and our online business ideas and business ideas for women pages go further on the online side. The honest limit is that a skill business with no listings has no price evidence at all, so we cannot rank one against the other. Our advice is to use the ranking above for what a business can become, and your own skill for what you can start this month.

Which sectors work from home

Grouped by sector, the home-based set is dominated by one. Home and trade services are 32.0% of the 4,200+ screened home-based listings, and the next sector, consumer services, is 10.7% (Main Street Index, October 2026). Technology and media is only 6.5%, although most home business lists lean on online work.

Home and trade services also has the lowest multiple of the eight sectors, 1.64x, with food and beverage next at 1.80x and the rest from 2.17x to 2.70x. The services-at-home model is therefore both the commonest and the cheapest. If you are looking at the broader local picture, our local business ideas page shows that 3,600+ home-based local listings ask 1.77x against 2.64x for storefronts, a related cut on a different base, and the home service business ideas page ranks the home services themselves.

Start a home-based business or buy one?

A home-based business is the one category where both answers are reasonable. Starting is cheap because there are no premises, a home office deduction and a small registration. Buying is cheap because the resale discount is 23%. The difference is time and risk. A purchase gives you customers on day one, and the seller’s stated earnings; a start gives you a lower cost and no earnings to verify.

A practical split: start when the work is a skill you can already sell this month, and your income target is under $60K. Buy when you want $120K or more, because the median business in that band asks $350,000 and runs on customers you could not build quickly. Under both, the lender and the seller care about the same ratio: price over stated earnings. If you want to finance a purchase, our SBA loan study tests which listings clear a standard coverage test, and the start or buy by budget guide matches the choice to your capital. For the full buying process, read how to buy a business.

If you are working full time, see how to start a business while working full time and part-time business ideas, and for the easiest to run once you own it, the easiest small businesses to run.

Zoning, licences and the home office deduction

Three rules apply to almost any business from a home. Zoning first: the SBA says you might have fewer zoning restrictions if you base your business out of your home, but zoning ordinances can still apply, and they are set locally, so call your city planning department (SBA, Launch your business). Client visits and signage are the usual triggers. Licences second: trades such as plumbing, HVAC and electrical work need a state or local licence whether or not you work from home. Our HVAC and pest control guides list what each needs.

Tax third. The IRS allows a home office deduction if part of your home is used regularly and exclusively for the business and is your principal place of business (IRS, Home Office Deduction). The simplified option is $5 per square foot of home used for business, with a maximum of 300 square feet, so at most $1,500 a year, with no depreciation to track (IRS, Simplified Option). The regular method uses actual expenses and a percentage of the home. Insurance is the fourth: the SBA notes that home-based business insurance is a rider on a homeowner’s policy that covers a small amount of equipment and third-party injury, so a business owner’s policy is the usual step up. Most registrations cost under $300, according to the SBA.

How to choose a home-based business

  1. Pick an income target in dollars of owner earnings. $24K a year is $2,000 a month, $120K is $10,000 a month and $365K is $1,000 a day. SDE is before your own pay and debt, so size the target before you size the idea.
  2. Choose between starting and buying. Start a skill you can sell this month; buy a route, crew or contract book if you want a business that already pays. Home-based businesses ask about 23% less per dollar of earnings than peers.
  3. Screen the listings for look-alikes. Drop listings that repeat another description across brokers or states. In the home-based set, 20.0% were look-alike families, mostly delivery routes and franchise adverts.
  4. Compare with the same industry, not the whole market. A pool route at 0.96x is cheap for a pool route. Judge any home-based ask against its own industry: across the 28 industries we tracked, home-based multiples run from 66% below to 4% above the same industry's others.
  5. Check zoning, licences and insurance. Zoning is local, trades need licences, and a home policy rider covers little. Settle these before you take your first customer.

What this data cannot tell you

Every figure is what sellers ask and state, not a verified sale (Main Street Index, October 2026). Seven limits matter:

  • Asking, not closing. Final prices are usually lower, and stated SDE is unaudited. Read medians as the market’s opening position.
  • Listed businesses only. A home-based business for sale is a business that someone built and wants to leave. It is not a sample of everyone who tried, so it says nothing about the share that fail.
  • The home-based flag is seller or text derived. Some businesses run from home without saying so, and some are tagged wrongly (the restaurant bucket). A look-alike screen removes copies, not every error.
  • Margin may overstate the home advantage. No rent lifts SDE margin mechanically, and owner add-backs vary.
  • Skills are not covered. Freelancing, virtual assistance and writing are not sold as businesses in enough numbers to measure.
  • Solo cuts are thin. No industry reaches 30 solo listings, so we show ranges only.

We started from the Main Street Index and kept US listings quoted in US dollars on an SDE basis, with cross-site duplicates removed: 48,800+ listings, of which 5,300+ are flagged home-based. We then removed look-alike families (three or more listings sharing the same opening description once digits are stripped), leaving 4,200+ home-based listings, 2,800+ of them with both SDE and an asking price and no real estate. Industry comes from the Main Street Index industry layer. Multiples are asking price divided by stated SDE; margin is SDE divided by stated revenue. Every figure is a median, and any cut under 30 listings is withheld, except the solo ranges and the per-band counts, which are labelled as such. Queries were read-only and run on October 11, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best home business to start?

On the numbers, a service you can sell to the same households or businesses every month: pool service, commercial cleaning, landscaping or building maintenance. These are the four industries with the most home-based businesses for sale, and they state a median $81K to $181K of owner earnings (SDE) on margins of 30% to 78% (Main Street Index, 600+ screened listings, October 2026). Skill-based ideas such as freelancing are cheaper to begin, but they do not show up as businesses with earnings you can check, so no listing data can rank them.

Which home-based business is most profitable?

By stated margin, pool service routes (77.9% of revenue, n=201), software (61.2%, n=37), food trucks and vending (56.3%, n=111) and publishing and media (50.0%, n=32). By owner earnings, the physical trades and fleet businesses lead: painting ($259K), trucking ($259K), plumbing ($238K) and roofing ($237K). The most profitable idea depends on whether you count percent or dollars, and on how many people work for you (Main Street Index, asking-price listings, October 2026).

How can I make $10,000 a month from home?

$10,000 a month is $120K of owner earnings a year. 58.5% of the 2,800+ screened home-based businesses for sale state at least that much, and the median one in that range asks $350,000, about 1.86 years of its earnings (Main Street Index, October 2026). Building the same income from nothing takes longer than buying it, but it costs time instead of the price. SDE is before your own pay and before debt service, so a $120K SDE business replaces a $10K-a-month income only if you own it outright.

How can I make an extra $2,000 a month from home?

$2,000 a month is $24K a year, which sits inside our smallest band. The 500+ home-based businesses that state under $60K of earnings ask a median $78,750 for 2.27x their earnings, led by pool service routes, food trucks and vending, and toy and hobby shops (Main Street Index, October 2026). For most people at this level the cheaper route is a part-time start with no purchase price: see our guides to part-time business ideas and starting while you work full time.

What business makes $1,000 a day?

$1,000 a day is about $365K a year. 350+ screened home-based listings (12.4% of the priced set) state at least that much, with a median ask of $1,400,000 at 2.77x. The largest groups, at 17 to 19 listings each, are courier routes, building maintenance, software and trucking: businesses with employees, not a one-person desk (Main Street Index, October 2026). Our dedicated page on what business makes $1,000 a day covers the full market.

What is the cheapest business to start from home?

The cheapest to start is a service you sell with your own time and a phone or laptop, and listing data cannot price that. The cheapest to buy, among 28 home-based industries with 30+ screened listings, are toy and hobby shops (median ask $74,828), pool service routes ($84,000), food and beverage wholesale ($146,900) and food trucks and vending ($149,750) (Main Street Index, October 2026). For start-up costs of a business built from scratch, see our cost to start a business guide.

What are 1 man business ideas from home?

Among listings that state an employee count, 440+ home-based businesses report one employee or none, across 90 to 174 per earnings band, but no single industry has 30 of them, so we do not rank solo industries (Main Street Index, October 2026). The solo businesses are spread over landscaping, commercial cleaning, plumbing, home improvement and food trucks, with median earnings between $78K and $355K in the largest groups. Read our page on business ideas with no employees for the full treatment.

Do I need a licence or permission to run a business from home?

Possibly both. The SBA says zoning ordinances can apply even to home-based businesses and are set locally, so check with your city planning department before you take clients or put up a sign (SBA, Launch your business). A trade such as plumbing, electrical or HVAC work needs a state or local licence whether or not you work from home, and the SBA lists registration at under $300 for most businesses.

Can I deduct my home office?

If part of your home is used regularly and exclusively for the business, and it is your principal place of business, yes (IRS, Home Office Deduction). The simplified method is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet, so at most $1,500 a year, with no depreciation to track. The regular method uses actual expenses and a percentage of the home. Talk to a tax adviser before choosing a method.

Is a home-based business worth less when you sell it?

Per dollar of earnings, yes. Compared with businesses in the same industry and earnings band, home-based listings ask a median 0.77 of the other multiple (n=2,300+ across 106 industries), and in 27 of 28 industries with 30+ listings the home-based multiple is lower (Main Street Index, asking prices, October 2026). They also state margins about 9 points higher. The lower price is partly the market's discount for a business tied to one person and one address.
