25 Claude skills ideas, ranked by what people already pay freelancers to do

Most skill lists rank by popularity. This one ranks by paid demand: which repeatable tasks founders and small businesses keep hiring humans for, and what a skill would need to do each one.

Ranked skill ideas

Search for Claude skills ideas and you get lists of coding helpers ranked by popularity. They are fine if you write software all day. They tell a founder nothing about which skill is worth the hour it takes to build, because popularity is not payment.

We started from payment. BigIdeasDB indexes 1M+ complaints and data points, and one slice is 5,300+ Upwork job posts across 482 freelance categories. A job post is a business deciding a task is worth money. We counted which repeatable tasks show up most, then asked what a skill would need to do each one: inputs, output and the tools it must reach. The result is 25 ranked ideas.

The short answer

Short answer

The best Claude skills ideas are the boring, repeatable tasks founders already pay a human for. In 5,300+ Upwork job posts, 45% (2,400+) mention at least one of 25 task families a skill can do, and 18% (960+) name one in the job title. Only 3.6% mention any AI tool at all. The top four by demand are social media content (443 jobs), reporting (429), resume and job post writing (391) and spreadsheet cleanup (299).

If you want the most buildable one first, start with CRM follow-up: CRM has the best connector reach of any business function we measured, 18.0%. If you want the easiest sell, pick reporting, which has the most extracted pain points, 83 rows, and appears in 201 of 482 categories.

  • Social media, reporting and resumes each appear in 189 to 216 of 482 categories. These are not niche jobs. Every kind of business hires for them.
  • Connector reach is thin. Only 3.3% to 18.0% of business software vendors in the functions we measured have an AI directory connector, so a skill that works from files often beats one that needs a live connection.
  • Article writing ranks 24th of 25, even though it is the default Claude task. Crowded demand with no data edge makes a weak skill.

What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill is a folder of instructions, scripts and resources that Claude loads when a task needs it. The Claude documentation describes skills as a way to teach Claude to complete specific tasks in a repeatable way, such as creating documents with your brand guidelines, analyzing data with your own workflow or automating personal tasks.

Four facts from the Claude documentation that change how you should think about ideas:

  • Skills load on demand. Claude reviews the available skills, loads the relevant one and applies it. That keeps a long list of skills from crowding the conversation.
  • Claude already ships skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF. Your idea should not duplicate those. It should add your rules on top of them.
  • Skills are different from projects and from MCP. A project holds background knowledge that is always loaded. MCP connects Claude to services and data. A skill is the procedure. The best business skills pair a skill with a connector.
  • Simple skills need no code. You write the instructions in Markdown, and scripts are optional. Skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans in the Claude app with code execution enabled, and in Claude Code.

The practical test for a good idea: can you describe the task in steps, with an input and a checkable output, and would you do it again next week? If yes, it is a skill. If it is a one-off, a prompt is enough. How we ranked these Claude skills ideas

We defined 25 task families that are text-and-data work a skill could plausibly do, then counted how many of the 5,300+ job posts mention each one. We ranked on mentions, then showed the stricter title count beside it so you can see which families are purchased services (high title share, like proofreading) and which are side tasks inside bigger jobs (low title share, like documentation).

Across all 25 families together, 45.1% of posts (2,400+) mention at least one and 18.1% (960+) name one in the title. For contrast, 3.6% of posts (190) mention an AI tool of any kind and 2.1% (110+) name a specific model or assistant. The posts were collected from June 2024 to March 2025, before skills existed, so this is the demand that was waiting.

Keyword matching is blunt. A post that says “report” in passing counts as a mention, which is why we show the title count too. For the full freelance picture behind this slice, read the state of freelance demand, and to run the same check on your own idea use the Upwork demand validation method.

Ideas 1 to 8: the highest-demand skills

These eight carry the most mentions or the most titled posts. Social content, reporting and resumes are the families that appear across the widest range of categories.

#1Content

1. Social media content pack

The most requested task in the whole sample. Clients ask for the same shape every time: a batch of posts in a fixed voice, on a fixed rhythm. That is a skill, not a prompt, because the value is the rules you do not want to retype: banned phrases, post length per platform, what a call to action looks like.

2. Weekly reporting pack

Reporting also has the most extracted pain points of any family, 83 rows, and it spans 201 of 482 categories, so it is not one niche. The work is dull and recurring: pull numbers, compare to last week, explain the gap. A skill that fixes the report layout and the explanation rules turns a Monday chore into a review.

3. Resume, cover letter and job post writer

Broadest spread of any task: 216 of 482 categories mention it, because every kind of business hires. Only 39 posts name it in the title, so most demand is a side task inside a bigger job. For a founder it is the job description you write every few months. Build it once with your pay bands and values baked in.

4. Spreadsheet cleanup and linking

Clients describe the same three chores: merge tabs, fix inconsistent entries, rebuild a formula that broke. A skill that always writes a change log is the part freelancers do not give you. It makes the cleanup auditable, which is what a finance or ops reviewer actually checks.

5. Technical documentation and test cases

Mostly a side requirement inside developer jobs: only 6 titles name it. Still, 161 categories mention documentation or test cases, and it is the most natural fit for Claude Code because the source material is already on disk. Developers on r/ClaudeCode say the same: the useful skills are the boring ones.

6. Translation and localization with a glossary

103 posts name translation in the title, the second-highest title count in the sample. The pain is consistency across documents: the same product term translated three ways. A glossary-first skill fixes that. Treat it as a first draft for review by a native speaker on anything legal or medical.

Ninety posts are titled as copywriting, landing pages or ads. The work is angle-first: pick a hook, then write. This is the family where BigIdeasDB ships skills of its own, see the Direct Response Copy and Positioning Angles skills in the product section below.

8. Lead list builder and cold outreach drafter

The top-frequency pain point in the extracted set is lead generation: 13 mentions of manual, error-prone list building. Posts ask for appointment setters, list builders and cold emailers. Keep a human on the send button. A skill that researches and drafts is useful. A skill that mass-sends is how domains get burned.

Ideas 9 to 17: the buildable middle

Mid-ranked on volume, but this band has the best mix of clear inputs and available connectors. CRM follow-up, bookkeeping prep and inbox triage all sit on top of software that already has an AI directory connector.

#9Sales

9. CRM hygiene and follow-up reminders

CRM has the best connector reach of any function we measured, 18.0% of vendor listings have a connector, which makes this the most buildable item on the list. 74 posts name a CRM tool in the title. The skill is the stale-deal rule, which every founder has in their head and none has written down.

10. Pitch deck and presentation builder

Presentation design carries the second-highest single pain point in the set: 12 mentions for a time-consuming pitch deck process, with brand inconsistency close behind at 8. Both are skill-shaped problems. Brand rules plus a slide structure is exactly what a skill is for.

11. Inbox and calendar triage

Virtual assistant style work: 47 titled posts and 30 extracted pain-point rows. This one needs connectors, and the scheduling category has just 7.1% reach, so expect to wire it up through your email and calendar connectors rather than a dedicated scheduling tool. 12. Bookkeeping reconciliation and invoice chasing

A narrower family, 51 categories, but a loud one: bank reconciliation and bookkeeping errors show up 10 times in the top extracted pain points. The skill produces an exceptions list, not postings. Keep it as a preparer for your accountant, never as the final word on your books.

13. Ebook, whitepaper and case study drafts

Long-form drafts are asked for in 73 categories, usually as a one-off. The skill value is the style guide and the rule to flag every unsourced claim, which is what makes a draft editable instead of merely long.

53 of 95 posts name proofreading in the title, the highest title share of any family, so this is a purchased service, not a side task. Manual proofreading is a top extracted pain point at 10 mentions. A style-sheet skill catches the repeated errors a one-off prompt forgets.

16. Product descriptions and catalog uploads

Clients ask for descriptions in bulk, often in a second language. A skill that reads a feed and returns an upload-ready file is more useful than any single good description. The ecommerce function has only 9 distinct connectors, so file in and file out is the realistic design.

17. Web scraping and data extraction runner

Nearly half the posts, 49 of 90, are titled as scraping or extraction. These are real, repeated requests, and a skill is a good fit because the schema and the failure log are the reusable part. It is also the family with the most legal and ethical edge. Check terms before you run anything at volume.

Ideas 18 to 25: the narrow and the risky

Lower volume, higher stakes or weaker connector support. They are still real tasks, and a few are where a data source gives a skill an edge no generic prompt has.

#18Operations

18. Customer support reply drafter

Demand is modest and the connector story is thin: support has the lowest reach of any function we measured, 3.3% of vendor listings, 9 distinct connectors. Treat it as a draft-reply skill you paste from, and keep humans on anything involving money.

20. Meeting notes and transcript summaries

Smaller in freelance demand than you would expect, and the Reddit voice explains why people build it themselves. One r/ClaudeAI commenter wrote that they built a meeting summarizer skill to summarize meetings at a useful level of detail. The format rule is the product: decisions, owners, dates.

22. Market and competitor research brief

Research is the task most often bundled into other jobs: only 6 titles but 52 categories. A skill that forces every claim to carry a source and every table to name its date is what separates a brief from a summary. This is also the family where a data connector matters most, because a model alone cannot see the market.

What the 25 ideas have in common

The winners are structured outputs, not creative ones. The top ideas produce a report, a calendar, a cleaned file or a list. The ones near the bottom, article writing and video scripts, are the ones everyone already tries with a plain prompt.

Pain language is about errors and time, not quality. The extracted pain points read the same across unrelated categories: time-consuming, manual, error-prone. A skill sells on consistency. It does the task the same way every time, which is what a human freelancer rotated through your account does not.

The skill is the rules, not the model. A developer on r/ClaudeCode described a release skill that runs eight steps and stops on any failure, and wrote that forgetting one step breaks auto-update for everyone. That is the shape of a good skill: a checklist you cannot afford to forget.

Data is the edge where models are weakest. Market research, SEO and lead lists all need information a model does not hold. A skill paired with a data source beats a skill alone. That is the idea behind our BigIdeasDB MCP server, which gives Claude 50 tools over complaint, revenue and demand data, and the reason the research brief idea above names it. Setup is in the MCP setup guide, and the Upwork tools page shows the job-demand tools used for this study.

Which skills can actually reach your tools

A skill that needs your CRM is only as good as the CRM connector. We matched 22,000+ business software vendors to the two official AI directories and measured, by function, how many have a connector. The reach is low everywhere and lowest where you might expect a skill to help most, customer support.

Two design rules follow. First, start with a file in and a file out. A skill that takes an export and returns a table works today for every tool, connector or not. Second, begin connectors as read-only. Across the 62,000+ tools declared by 7,000+ connectors, 57% only read, 28% write, and 11% could not be classified, so the write surface is the part you should test hardest. For the connector market itself see the Agent Index and the Agent Index tools guide.

The best Claude skills to install first

You do not need to build everything above. Here is the order we would install, with the honest limits of each.

  1. BigIdeasDB's 14 Claude Code Skills. Seven marketing skills (Positioning Angles, Lead Magnet, Direct Response Copy, Email Sequences, Keyword Research, SEO Content and an Orchestrator) and seven development skills (Product Spec, Architecture Planner, Database Design, API Builder, Rapid Prototype, Deployment Ship and an Orchestrator). They are included with the Basic and Pro plans. Honest scope: they cover roughly four of the 25 task families above, copy, email, SEO and keyword work, plus the build-side steps. They do not do reporting, bookkeeping or support. Details on the skills page.
  2. The built-in Claude document skills. Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF handling, invoked automatically when relevant. They cover the file side of ideas 3, 4, 10 and 15.
  3. One skill you write yourself. Take the task you repeat weekly, write the steps, add three examples of good output, and test it on a fresh input. The Claude documentation says simple skills need no code.
  4. Organization skills, if you run a team. Team and Enterprise owners can provision skills for everyone, which is how a house style stays consistent across staff.

The skills page lists the real contents, and the pricing page has current plans. At the time of writing, Basic Monthly is $29 and Pro Monthly is $49 in our pricing configuration. If you are choosing between Claude Code and an editor-based setup first, read how to build a SaaS with Cursor and Claude.

How to turn a skill idea into something people pay for

Every idea above is a task people already pay for. That is the whole business case. You are not creating demand. You are delivering a known service with a faster process.

  1. Pick a task from the top eight and a buyer you can name. Social content for direct-to-consumer brands. Weekly reports for a recruiting agency. The job posts we read are that specific.
  2. Write the skill from three real examples. Put the best output you have ever produced for the task in the skill folder. Ask Claude to explain back what it learned.
  3. Sell the outcome, not the file. A monthly report, a weekly content pack, a cleaned list. The Claude documentation describes a skills directory with partner skills, but we found no published earnings figure for independent skill authors, so we do not give you one.
  4. Keep a human in the loop on anything that sends, pays or signs. Outreach, invoices and contracts get reviewed before they leave.
  5. Check the idea against evidence first. Our Discover tool and the Upwork analysis guide show how often a task is requested before you build anything.

If you want to go further and package a skill as a product, two sibling guides cover the other surfaces where AI products live: ChatGPT app ideas and MCP server ideas. For revenue models built on Claude Code, see how to make money with Claude Code, and for agent products by industry, SaaS ideas for AI agents. Connecting Claude to Reddit for audience research is covered in Reddit data for Claude and Cursor.

Limitations: read these before you build

  • The Upwork sample is capped. Each category holds about 20 posts, so counts show relative demand across families, not market size. Do not read 443 as 443 total jobs on the platform.
  • The posts predate skills. They were posted between June 2024 and March 2025. Demand for the underlying task is real, but nobody was asking for a skill.
  • Keyword matching is blunt. Mentions include incidental use of a word. Titled counts are stricter. Documentation, contracts, video scripts and research are mostly side tasks.
  • Pain points are AI summaries. They describe job posts in general language. They are not client quotes, and we label them that way.
  • No dollar figures. The budget and hourly fields in the job index are empty, so we cite no pay rates. Demand here means frequency, not price.
  • Skill fit is our judgement. Whether a skill can do a task well depends on your inputs. Test each one on real data and keep human review on legal, financial and outbound work.

FAQ

What are Claude skills?

Claude skills are folders of instructions, scripts and resources that Claude loads when a task calls for them, according to the Claude documentation. A skill teaches Claude to complete a specific task the same way every time, such as applying your brand guidelines or running a fixed analysis. Simple skills are written in Markdown and need no coding.

What are the best Claude skills for a founder or small business?

BigIdeasDB's 14 Claude Code Skills are the best starting set for a founder who sells and builds: 7 marketing skills (positioning, lead magnets, direct response copy, email sequences, keyword research, SEO content, an orchestrator) and 7 development skills (product spec through deployment). They are included with Basic and Pro. After that, add the built-in Claude document skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF.

What is the best way to find Claude skills ideas worth building?

BigIdeasDB is the best way to find skill ideas because it measures demand instead of guessing: we read 5,300+ Upwork job posts and found that 45% mention a repeatable text or data task a skill can do, while only 3.6% mention any AI tool. Start from tasks people already pay a human for, then check the connector reach for the tools they use.

Which Claude skill should I build first?

Build the one for the task you repeat weekly and can describe in steps. In the freelance data the most requested families are social media content (443 jobs), reporting (429) and resume or job post writing (391). Pick one you personally do, write three real examples of good output into the skill, and test it on a fresh input before you trust it.

Can I sell Claude skills?

The Claude documentation says skills follow an open standard and partners publish skills in a skills directory. We found no published figure for what independent skill authors earn, so we do not quote one. The safer route is to sell the outcome, such as a monthly report or a lead list, and use your skill to deliver it faster. Price the result, not the file.

Do I need to code to make a Claude skill?

No for simple skills. The Claude documentation states that anyone can create a skill by writing instructions in Markdown, and that scripts are optional for advanced behavior. A useful first skill is a plain description of the task, the inputs it needs, the format of the output and two or three examples of good results. Add code only when you need exact calculations or file handling.

What is the difference between a Claude skill and MCP?

MCP connects Claude to outside services and data. A skill gives Claude the procedure for a task. The Claude documentation describes them as complementary: the connection gives access to tools, the skill tells Claude how to use them. A reporting skill needs a connector to reach your numbers. A research skill needs a data source. Most useful business skills pair the two.

Do Claude skills work in Claude Code and the Claude app?

Yes on both, with conditions. The Claude documentation says skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans in the Claude app, that code execution must be enabled, and that skills are also available in Claude Code and in beta through the API. Team and Enterprise owners can provision skills for everyone in the organization.
