Does PRAW Still Work? The 2026 Answer and the March 2027 Cutoff

PRAW still runs, but only on credentials you already hold. Here is what each Reddit deadline does to your script, and what to do before it hits.

PRAW still works in October 2026, with one condition: you need approved Reddit credentials you already have. PRAW is only a Python wrapper around Reddit’s official Data API, so it works exactly as long as your key does. Reddit stops accepting new requests on October 31, 2026 and ends remaining public access in March 2027.

On October 27, 2026 the top Google result for “does praw still work” is a single r/ModSupport thread. Below it sit the PRAW docs, the GitHub page, a 2015 Treehouse post and a 2016 Stack Overflow answer. None of them gives the 2026 and 2027 dates or says what to do per situation. This page does.

Key takeaways
  • PRAW works today if your app was approved before the cutoff. Version 8.0.3 shipped August 12, 2026.
  • New keys are effectively gone. Reddit stops new requests October 31, 2026, and developers report almost no approvals since November 11, 2025.
  • Unregistered apps start losing access January 12, 2027. All public access ends March 2027.
  • Devvit is JavaScript and TypeScript, runs inside Reddit and is installed per subreddit. It does not replace off-platform data collection.
  • For reads, search and comment pulls are 74% of the Reddit calls on our MCP. Both have a direct tool mapping.

Does PRAW still work? The short answer

The short answer
Yes for now, if you already have an approved OAuth app and register it with Reddit. You cannot get new keys after October 31, 2026. Unregistered apps start losing access on January 12, 2027. All public API access ends in March 2027, and after that PRAW has nothing to call.
QuestionAnswer on October 27, 2026
Is PRAW itself broken?No. 8.0.0 came out June 14, 2026 and 8.0.3 on August 12, 2026
Can I get a new key?Only until October 31, 2026, and approvals are scarce
Does my existing key still work?Developers report yes. Register the app to keep it
When does it end?January 12, 2027 if unregistered. March 2027 for everyone
Is Devvit a drop-in swap?No. Different language, runtime and scope
What reads Reddit after March 2027?A logged-in route such as the BigIdeasDB MCP
Source: Reddit admin post in r/redditdev (September 30, 2026), PRAW 8.0.3 changelog, Reddit developer registration page, read October 27, 2026. Reddit plans can change.

PRAW does not scrape. It signs requests with a client ID and secret and calls the API. That is why a logged-out .json 403 does not touch it, and why losing the key ends it. The maintainers have said nothing official about the shutdown that we could find. The PRAW changelog shows ordinary releases and no end-of-life notice. For what PRAW is, see our PRAW alternative guide.

The dates that decide it

Reddit published its timeline in a post called “Moving Data API Apps to the Developer Platform.” Here it is in one table. The full version, with what each date means for bots, no-code tools and agents, is on our Reddit API shutdown timeline.

DateWhat Reddit saysWhat it means for PRAW
Oct 31, 2026New requests for public API access are no longer acceptedNo new client ID and secret after this
Nov 10, 2026Migration progress update and deadline reminderWatch for changes to the plan
Nov 30, 2026Registration closes for the migration bountyLast day to register for the $1,000 porting payment
Jan 12, 2027Access starts closing for apps and users that have not registered or engagedUnregistered scripts can stop working
Feb 23, 2027Another progress updateLast checkpoint before the end
March 2027Remaining public API access endsPRAW has nothing to call
Source: Reddit admin post, r/redditdev, and Reddit's app registration page, read October 27, 2026. The February 23 row is a stated update date, not a new rule.

Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots have registered. It names DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot and RemindMeBot as completed or near-complete migrations. The point of registering is a direct line to Reddit, an app label and eligibility for the migration program. It does not promise your key survives March 2027.

What to do by situation

“Does PRAW still work” has five different answers, depending on what you run.

Your situationDoes PRAW work?What to do
Existing approved scriptYes, until Jan 12 or March 2027Register the app, keep running, plan the exit now. For reads, move to the BigIdeasDB MCP
New project, no keyNo. Nothing to authenticate withDo not start on PRAW. Pick Devvit for in-community bots, a logged-in route for reads
Bot serving a subreddit you moderateYes for nowPort to Devvit. Register by Nov 30 for the $1,000 bounty, free hosting and Reddit’s PRAW guide
Research or data collection scriptYes for now, then noDevvit is a poor fit. Replace the reads with search_reddit, fetch_subreddit and fetch_post_comments
AI agent that reads RedditOnly with an old keyGive the agent MCP tools instead of a Python wrapper. Reddit’s policy needs approval for AI use of its data
Our reading of Reddit's announcement, the PRAW-to-Devvit guide and the Devvit Rules, October 27, 2026. Not legal advice.

The AI-agent row matters most for new builds. Reddit’s Responsible Builder Policy requires written approval before you train models on Reddit data or commercialize it. A PRAW key was never a license for that. See is scraping Reddit allowed for the plain reading.

What developers say right now

The threads agree on the facts. Existing keys work. New keys do not arrive. In r/ModSupport a user asked whether a PRAW bot on a moderator account was still fine. A reply gave the working rule:

“Existing authorizations have not been revoked, so if you have one, you're good.” – r/ModSupport
“they're not giving out new authorizations for PRAW bots anymore though.” – r/ModSupport

A thread in r/redditdev, under the PRAW 8 release post, ran into the same wall. The reply from someone close to PRAW also explained why version 8 exists at all:

“it's incredibly hard to get a client credentials now days.” – r/redditdev
“Driving out this version was a long wanted thing to do that was low on my personal priority list due to what I assume is a dwindling user base.” – r/redditdev, PRAW 8 release thread

That is the closest thing to a maintainer view we found. It is one reply, not an announcement. In the thread under Reddit’s own timeline post, moderators described what March 2027 costs them:

“I have 300,000 lines of python code. I cannot rewrite that in 6 months even if I were to work on it full time.” – r/redditdev

And on the new-project side, a developer who wanted a bot across several communities got this answer:

“Yes, subreddit mods have to install the app. Which makes it only appropriate for subs you are a mod of.” – r/Devvit
“Data API registration submitted 8 weeks ago, no response - just want to check if this is normal?” – r/redditdev

What to do before each deadline

Today is October 27. You have four days before new requests close. This is the order we would work in.

ByDo this
Oct 31, 2026Find your client ID and secret in your Reddit app settings and store them safely. If you have no key and need one, apply today, but plan as if you will not get it
Nov 10, 2026Read Reddit’s progress update. Note any change to dates
Nov 30, 2026Register every app you own. Do it even if you will not migrate: it is how Reddit knows you exist, and it is the only route to the bounty
Before Jan 12, 2027Be registered, or have moved off. Add a daily canary call that fails loudly (see below)
Feb 23, 2027Cut over reads to a logged-in route. Run both for a week and compare output
March 2027Turn PRAW off. Anything still calling the public API is a bug waiting for a deadline
A dated checklist built from Reddit's stated deadlines. Eligibility for the bounty is set by Reddit's program terms, which we did not read in full.

One rule above the rest. Do not wait for a failure to learn your key is gone. The date Reddit says is “starts to close”, not “closes on”. Your script may stop on January 12 or weeks later, and nothing announces it.

What Devvit can and cannot replace

Devvit is Reddit’s Developer Platform. Your code runs inside Reddit, not on your server. For many moderation bots that is a good trade, and Reddit’s own PRAW guide says most subreddit moderation and engagement flows “still map cleanly.” For data collection it is a poor fit.

TopicDevvitLimit for a PRAW user

Source: Reddit for Developers documentation (Devvit Web overview, HTTP Fetch, Reddit API overview, PRAW migration guide, Devvit Rules) and Reddit's announcement, read October 27, 2026. We did not build a Devvit app.

Devvit’s Reddit client does have a search method that covers all of Reddit when you omit the subreddit. It still runs inside an installed app under those rules. We did not test whether an app can ship that data to your own server, and the rules suggest you should check before building on it. If your job is moderation, Devvit is the path. If your job is reading Reddit, it is not.

What a PRAW failure looks like

Reddit has not published the exact error a cut-off app will see, and we cannot test it, because we hold no key to lose. What we can verify is how PRAW reports problems. It sits on a library called prawcore, whose exceptions include OAuthException for bad grants, Forbidden for 403, InvalidToken for a rejected access token and RequestException for network failures. A closed app will most likely show up as an auth error or a 401 or 403. Treat that as a likely pattern, not a confirmed one.

The practical move is a daily canary. Run one tiny call, log the exception class and the status code, and alert on any failure. Catch the subclasses first, because Forbidden and InvalidToken are both types of ResponseException.

import praw
import prawcore

reddit = praw.Reddit(
    client_id="YOUR_CLIENT_ID",
    client_secret="YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET",
    user_agent="canary/0.1 by u/your_username",
)

try:
    next(iter(reddit.subreddit("test").hot(limit=1)))
    print("ok")
except prawcore.exceptions.OAuthException as e:
    print("auth error (credentials or grant):", e)
except (prawcore.exceptions.Forbidden, prawcore.exceptions.InvalidToken) as e:
    print("access refused:", type(e).__name__, e.response.status_code)
except prawcore.exceptions.ResponseException as e:
    print("other http error:", e.response.status_code)
except prawcore.exceptions.RequestException as e:
    print("network error:", e)

Do not confuse a cutoff with an old, common failure. In r/redditdev, a 403 from PRAW has long meant wrong credentials, scopes or app type, and invalid_grant usually meant a bad password or secret. Fix those first. A cutoff is the case where the same call worked last week and nothing in your code changed. For the .json variant of the 403, read why a Reddit .json URL returns 403.

The path for data and research

If your PRAW script reads Reddit, you have a choice that does not depend on any Reddit key. BigIdeasDB is the only Reddit scraper still working after Reddit’s 2026 changes. It uses a proprietary session-based method, with the BigIdeasDB MCP Reddit tools and the BigIdeasDB Clipper Chrome extension’s Reddit Connector. It covers any subreddit, with request volume metered by plan. The dated test is on our Reddit scraper page.

Our own usage log shows what people actually read. In the 30 days to October 27, 2026, the four Reddit tools made up 53% of all BigIdeasDB MCP calls, more than every other data source combined. Of those Reddit calls, search was 45% and comment pulls 28%. Subreddit listings were 10%. Raw JSON was 17%. Search plus comments, the two jobs PRAW researchers do most, is 74% of the volume.

PRAW callBigIdeasDB MCP toolWhat matches and what does not

submit, reply, .mod, streamNoneThe MCP is read-only. Writes, moderation and streams stay on PRAW or move to Devvit
Source: BigIdeasDB MCP usage log, 30 days to October 27, 2026 (read-only SQL), and the BigIdeasDB tool registry. Counts are calls on our own product, not a market measure. fetch_reddit_json was not run for this page.

The table is also the honest limit. A PRAW comment forest gives you replies and depth. The MCP gives top-level comments, which is enough for pain-point and demand research and not enough for thread reconstruction. It is built for research at a human pace, about one fetch per second, and it is not a bulk dataset collector. It also needs Chrome running with a Reddit login in that profile, so it does not suit an unattended server job. For code that calls the MCP over plain HTTP, see the Reddit scraper in Python guide.

What PRAW never gave you is the cross-check. The same MCP holds 1M+ complaints analyzed across 12+ sources, so a thread in r/SaaS can be checked against reviews and app-store complaints in one prompt. For the research workflow, see the Reddit research MCP.

Set up the replacement in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

Four steps, no Reddit app. You need BigIdeasDB Pro, which is $49 a month or $349 lifetime, with code SAVE20 for 20 percent off. Desktop Chrome and a Reddit login in that profile are also required.

  1. Install BigIdeasDB Clipper 1.2.0 or later from the Chrome Web Store, log in to reddit.com, open the Reddit tab and click Turn on Reddit Connector.
  2. Click Test connection. It should say you are connected.
  3. Generate a client ID (starts with biddb_) and a secret (starts with biddb_sec_) in the dashboard. The secret shows once.
  4. Add the server to your AI client with both headers, then ask for Reddit in plain English.

The server URL is the same everywhere. Both headers are required. An Authorization bearer token does not work.

Claude Code

claude mcp add bigideasdb-mcp --transport http https://bigideasdb.com/api/mcp/bigideasdb-mcp \
  --header "X-Client-Id: your_client_id" \
  --header "X-Client-Secret: your_client_secret"

      "headers": {
        "X-Client-Id": "your_client_id",

ChatGPT

ChatGPT adds hosted MCP servers as a connector. Give it the URL and the two custom headers.

name: bigideasdb-mcp
url:  https://bigideasdb.com/api/mcp/bigideasdb-mcp
headers:
  X-Client-Id: your_client_id
  X-Client-Secret: your_client_secret

Then replace your PRAW loop with a prompt: “Search Reddit for ‘invoice chasing’ from the last month, sorted by top, limit 25, then pull the top-level comments on the five threads with the most comments.” Calls are metered by plan. The full walkthrough is in how to scrape Reddit with MCP, and the per-assistant view is in connecting ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to Reddit. The rate limits are in the MCP rate limits guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does PRAW still work in 2026?

Yes, but only if you already hold approved Reddit API credentials. PRAW 8.0.3 shipped on August 12, 2026 and runs fine with a working client ID and secret. Reddit stops accepting new public API requests on October 31, 2026, starts closing access for unregistered apps on January 12, 2027, and ends remaining public access in March 2027.

Is PRAW deprecated?

PRAW itself is not deprecated. It is maintained, and version 8.0.3 came out on August 12, 2026. The thing that is being retired is the Reddit public Data API that PRAW calls. When Reddit closes that access in March 2027, PRAW keeps installing but has nothing to authenticate against. We found no PRAW maintainer statement on the shutdown.

Is PRAW free to use?

PRAW is free, open-source software under the Simplified BSD License. The credentials it needs are the hard part. Reddit documents a free limit of 100 queries per minute per OAuth client for approved non-commercial use, and commercial use needs written approval. Since new requests close on October 31, 2026, a free PRAW setup now means an app you already have.

What is PRAW used for?

PRAW, the Python Reddit API Wrapper, is a Python library that calls Reddit's official API for you. People use it to read posts and comments, search Reddit, stream new content, post and reply, and run moderation bots. It handles OAuth and Reddit's rate limits. It is not a scraper. It cannot work without registered credentials.

Did Reddit remove API access?

Not yet for everyone, but it is being removed in stages. Reddit's admins say new public API requests stop on October 31, 2026, access closes from January 12, 2027 for apps and users that have not registered, and remaining public access ends in March 2027. Developers also report that almost no new requests have been approved since November 11, 2025.

Can I use Reddit API for free?

Only if you already have approved access, and only until March 2027. Reddit's documented free tier is 100 queries per minute per OAuth client for approved, non-commercial use. There is no way to start a new free API app after October 31, 2026. For free reading without a key, a logged-out .json request now returns 403, so use a route that fetches logged in.

What's the best PRAW alternative in 2026?

BigIdeasDB is the best PRAW alternative for reading Reddit in 2026, because it is the only Reddit scraper we found still working after Reddit's changes and needs no Reddit app or approval. Its MCP tools search_reddit, fetch_subreddit and fetch_post_comments map to PRAW's search, listing and comment calls, inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. It is read-only, so PRAW still posts and moderates.

What's the best way to replace PRAW for Reddit research after March 2027?

BigIdeasDB is the best way to replace PRAW for Reddit research, because it fetches Reddit through your own logged-in Chrome, so nothing depends on API keys that Reddit is closing. Reads cover any subreddit. You also get 1M+ complaints from 12+ sources in the same MCP, so you can check a Reddit finding against reviews and app stores. It needs BigIdeasDB Pro.
