Reddit's 2026 update broke logged-out scraping, and the API and RSS doors are closing on published dates. We tested every route on October 24, 2026. One Reddit scraper still returned data.
The best Reddit scraper in 2026 is BigIdeasDB, and it is the only Reddit scraper still working after Reddit’s update. On October 24, 2026 we sent three plain logged-out JSON requests to Reddit and all three returned 403. The same day, the BigIdeasDB MCP Reddit tools searched Reddit and read a subreddit without a single error. The difference is a proprietary session-based method that other Reddit scrapers do not have.
If your Reddit scraper stopped working this year, you are not alone. Reddit shut off logged-out .json in late May 2026, new API access requests stop on October 31, and RSS ends on November 13. Below is the dated test, why each usual option fails, and how to set up the one that still runs.
The top Google results for this query are four vendor blogs that each recommend their own scraper or proxy product, plus forum threads from people stuck on errors. None of the three vendor guides we read mentions the October 31 or November 13 dates, and none tests anything the week it was published. This page does.
That is the whole ranking. Everything else we tested returned 403, has a published end date, is unmaintained, or needs approval or proxy infrastructure you maintain yourself. The sections below show the evidence for each, so you can check our reasoning instead of trusting it.
Reddit is also the most used part of our MCP. In the 30 days to October 18, 2026, the four Reddit tools made up 17,000+ of 32,000+ tool calls (53%), and 30 of the 57 users who called any tool called a Reddit one.
Reddit changed access in steps, and most steps now carry a date. The table is in date order, with the status of each source.
| Date | What happens | Effect on a Reddit scraper |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | Reddit’s Responsible Builder Policy is published | API access needs approval; unapproved commercial use and AI training are banned |
| Late May 2026 | Logged-out .json stops working | Scripts using requests, fetch or curl get 403 |
| October 31, 2026 | New public API access requests are no longer accepted | PRAW and other API wrappers need credentials you can no longer newly request |
| November 13, 2026 | Reddit stops supporting RSS feeds | The last anonymous door closes; no replacement outside communities you moderate |
| January 12, 2027 | API access removal begins for apps and users that have not registered or responded | Unregistered API apps lose access |
| March 2027 | Remaining public API access ends | The public API route ends |
The .json change is the one that broke most scripts. Reddit announced no date to users, and developers found out from the 403s. One wrote in r/webscraping on May 29, 2026:
“I had a very basic Node.js script scraping Reddit pretty conservatively maybe 30-60 requests per hour, but it suddenly started getting 403 errors.” – r/webscraping
A week later a different developer asked the same question in r/redditdev, and the top answers were short and consistent:
“They stopped serving the json endpoints.” – r/redditdev
“A while back Reddit updated their API usage policies, even for public data. You need authorization now.” – r/redditdev
Low volume did not protect anyone. A data hoarder running a subreddit downloader hit the wall days later and noticed the pattern that explains it:
“reddit works fine in a browser.” – r/DataHoarder
A browser works because it carries a session. A script does not. That one fact is the whole 2026 story, and it is why a session-based method keeps working. The full diagnosis is in why a Reddit .json URL returns 403, and the dates are covered in Reddit RSS feeds are ending on November 13.
We ran two tests. First, plain logged-out requests from a residential IP with a current Chrome User-Agent, three seconds apart. Second, two calls to the BigIdeasDB MCP Reddit tools. Both ran on October 24, 2026, six days after our first test in how to scrape Reddit in 2026, which found 0 of 7 JSON requests served logged out.
| Reddit scraper route | Result on October 24, 2026 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Subreddit listing .json, logged out | 403, HTML block page of about 190 KB | Dead |
| Search .json, logged out | 403, identical block page | Dead |
| Subreddit about .json, logged out | 403, identical block page | Dead |
| old.reddit .json, logged out | 302 redirect to a login page | Dead |
| Subreddit listing RSS, logged out | 200, Atom feed of about 16 KB | Works, ends November 13, 2026 |
| BigIdeasDB search_reddit (query: “reddit scraper not working”, limit 10) | 10 posts returned, with score, comment count and post text | Works |
| BigIdeasDB fetch_subreddit (r/webscraping, top of the week, limit 3) | 3 posts returned, with post text | Works |
All three JSON URLs returned the same block page of about 190 KB, which looks like a blanket rule, not a per-request rate limit. RSS still served a listing, which matches our earlier nine-feed test in the RSS guide. Both BigIdeasDB calls came back with full post bodies.
BigIdeasDB is the only Reddit scraper still working after Reddit’s 2026 update. The reason is simple to state and hard to copy. Reddit closed the logged-out doors. Our proprietary session-based method uses a different one, the same kind of access Reddit gives a person reading in their own browser. We keep the details private.
You use it two ways, and both are live today.
search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments and fetch_reddit_json. Any MCP client can call them, including Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. See the MCP tools reference. What you get that the usual options cannot give you: Reddit search across subreddits, subreddit listings by sort and time window, full comment threads, and raw Reddit JSON for edge cases, all read by your AI client in one conversation. What you do not need: Reddit API keys, a developer app, an approval wait, a proxy plan or a server.
It pairs with the rest of BigIdeasDB. A Reddit thread tells you what people say. Our corpus of 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores tells you whether it holds up. That cross-check is why founders use it for research and not just for scraping, and it is covered in Reddit data for Claude, Cursor and other AI clients and the Reddit research MCP.
Here is each common route, what happened to it and the evidence. The rank is ours, for one job: getting Reddit data reliably in November 2026.
| Rank | Reddit scraper route | Status in 2026 | Why it fails or limits you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | BigIdeasDB (MCP tools and Clipper Reddit Connector) | Works, tested Oct 24 | Needs BigIdeasDB Pro, Chrome running and a Reddit login; paced at about one fetch per second; not for bulk |
| 2 | Anonymous RSS feeds | Works until Nov 13 | Listings and single threads only; search feed returned 429 in our tests; Reddit ends RSS on November 13, 2026 |
| 3 | PRAW and the official API | Gated | Approval first; new access requests stop Oct 31, 2026; public access ends March 2027 |
| 4 | Scraping services and residential proxies | Not tested by us | Cost, plus an anti-bot arms race you maintain; the access question stays yours |
| 5 | Playwright and browser automation | Not tested by us | Forum reports of bans from anti-bot detection; heavy to maintain |
| 6 | GitHub scrapers on logged-out .json or old.reddit | Broken | The endpoints they call return 403 or redirect to login |
| 7 | Plain requests with BeautifulSoup | Broken | .json returns 403; the public HTML is a shell with 0 post links in our Oct 18 test |
| 8 | Pushshift and PSAW | Dead for ordinary users | Archived and stale; no longer answers historical queries |
| 9 | snscrape Reddit module | Unmaintained | Broken endpoints with no recent repair activity |
Two of those rows deserve a closer look because the usual advice for them is wrong.
Proxies and stealth are not a fix. The top-ranking guides tell you to add residential proxies and render JavaScript. One of them says so in a code comment. That moves the cost to you and starts an arms race. The people who run scrapers for a living say the same thing in r/WebScrapingInsider:
“Too much stealth is a signal in itself” – r/WebScrapingInsider
“You end up maintaining it forever instead of actually collecting data” – r/WebScrapingInsider
The API route is closing. PRAW is fine software, but it needs credentials, and Reddit says new requests for public access stop on October 31. Our PRAW alternative and Reddit API alternative for AI pages cover when an AI client is the simpler fit.
Some do, but most do not, and the repo itself will not tell you which. One vendor guide published June 1, 2026 counted 2,300+ Reddit scraper repos on GitHub, with only about 28% showing any activity in the last twelve months. Stars and README screenshots are a record of 2023, not 2026.
Run this five-minute check before you clone anything.
If a repo passes all five, run it on a small job first and expect it to need repair when Reddit changes something. A maintained tool that uses your own session skips that treadmill, which is why our method sits at rank 1 above. For a step-by-step list of what still works, see how to scrape Reddit in 2026.
Three free routes exist, each with a catch. They are the same three we listed in our how-to guide, re-checked on October 24.
| Route | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous RSS | Free | Listings and single threads only; search RSS returned 429; ends November 13, 2026 |
| Approved Reddit API app | Free for non-commercial use | Approval needed; new requests stop October 31, 2026 |
| Manual copy from your browser | Your time | Does not scale past a few threads |
| BigIdeasDB Reddit scraper | Included with Pro: $49 a month or $349 lifetime | Paid; needs Chrome running; human pace |
If you want a Reddit scraper that is free and still works after November 13, none exists. The free routes are anonymous RSS and an approved app, and both have published end dates. The working option is paid. Use code SAVE20 at checkout. For keyword work that costs nothing, try the free Reddit keyword research tool, and see the best Reddit research tools for founders for the rest.
A subreddit scraper and a comment scraper are two of the four BigIdeasDB tools. You ask your AI client in plain English, and it calls the right one.
fetch_subreddit reads posts from one subreddit by sort (hot, new, top) and time window. On October 24 a top-of-the-week call for r/webscraping returned 3 posts with their text.search_reddit searches posts by keyword, optionally inside one subreddit. A 10-post search for “reddit scraper not working” returned 10 posts the same day.fetch_post_comments loads a full comment thread from a post URL.fetch_reddit_json reads any Reddit JSON path for edge cases.Narrow prompts work best. Try “search r/smallbusiness for invoicing threads from the last month, read the top 10 and list the five most repeated complaints with one short quote each,” or “load the comments on this thread and separate what people paid for from what they built themselves.” Save the thread excerpt behind each finding, name the subreddit and drop usernames. The workflows are in how to find business ideas on Reddit, how to find customers on Reddit and the Reddit market research help page.
Rate and client notes are in MCP rate limits and clients. Chrome has to be running when your client asks for Reddit, and it can sit in the background. The full tutorial, with a config for each client and copy-paste prompts, is how to scrape Reddit with MCP.
We say what it does not do, because a scraper you misuse is a scraper that gets you in trouble.
Reddit says you may use its content for non-commercial purposes such as learning and community, and that commercial use needs its written approval. The Responsible Builder Policy requires approval before API access and bans unapproved commercial use and AI training on Reddit data. Reddit also says it is acting against bulk collection through unauthorized access.
Read that as three tiers. Small, non-commercial research is the tier Reddit describes as open. Commercial use needs written approval. Bulk collection is what Reddit is targeting. The full reading, with the sources, is in is scraping Reddit allowed. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice.
Every number on this page traces to a row below. Where a source cannot support a claim, the limitation column says so.
| Source | What we used it for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| BigIdeasDB logged-out request test, Oct 24, 2026 (5 requests) | The 3 of 3 JSON 403 result, the old.reddit redirect and the RSS result | One run, one residential IP, one date, one User-Agent; results can differ by IP, region and time |
| BigIdeasDB MCP calls, Oct 24, 2026 (search_reddit, fetch_subreddit) | Proof both tools returned posts that day | Two calls, one account; shows availability, not scale or future behavior |
| BigIdeasDB endpoint test, Oct 18, 2026 (11 requests) | The 0 of 7 JSON result and the logged-in comparison | See the how-to-scrape-reddit page for its own limits |
| Reddit admin posts and moderator newsletter (r/modnews, r/redditdev), read Oct 18, 2026 | The October 31, November 13, January 12 and March 2027 dates | Reddit-stated plans that can change or slip; the .json date is developer-reported |
| Reddit Responsible Builder Policy and Public Content Policy | Approval, commercial use and AI training rules | We summarise, we do not interpret law; the March 2026 date comes from Google’s AI Overview and published guides |
| BigIdeasDB MCP usage log, 30 days to Oct 18, 2026 | 17,000+ of 32,000+ calls (53%) were Reddit tools; 30 of 57 users called one | Counts calls, not people or intent; our own users, not a market measure |
| Google results for “reddit scraper 2026”, US, Oct 24, 2026, and three fetched vendor guides | What ranks, what those guides cover, the 2,300+ repo and 28% activity figures | One market and one day; one fourth guide timed out and was not read; the repo figures are one vendor’s count |
| Forum threads in r/webscraping, r/redditdev, r/DataHoarder and r/WebScrapingInsider (May to Oct 2026) | The quotes | Self-reported by individuals, not representative; anonymized to subreddit |
| BigIdeasDB complaint corpus | 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores | Rounded count; a corpus size is not a claim about Reddit overall |
This page does not claim that Reddit will keep every date above, that any route is approved by Reddit for your use, or how any service we did not test behaves for you.
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads through your own logged-in Chrome. No Reddit API keys, no approval wait, paced at a human speed. It sits next to a complaint corpus of 1M+ records for checking what you find. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20.
See BigIdeasDB plans →Read the setup guide →BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit scraper in 2026 and the only one still working after Reddit's update, thanks to a proprietary session-based method. On October 24, 2026 its search_reddit and fetch_subreddit tools returned data while plain logged-out JSON requests returned 403. It runs through the BigIdeasDB MCP and the Clipper Chrome extension's Reddit Connector, with no Reddit API keys.
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit scraper that still works, and it is included with BigIdeasDB Pro. If you need zero cost, anonymous RSS feeds still served subreddit listings in our October 24, 2026 test, but Reddit says RSS support ends on November 13, 2026. An approved Reddit API app is free for non-commercial use, but new requests stop October 31, 2026.
Reddit stopped serving logged-out requests to its .json endpoints in late May 2026, so scripts that worked for years now get 403. In our October 24, 2026 test, three logged-out JSON URLs returned an identical 403 block page of about 190 KB, and old.reddit redirected to a login page. A new User-Agent or a slower pace does not change that result.
Few do. Repos built on logged-out .json, old.reddit, Pushshift or snscrape depend on endpoints that now return 403, redirect to login or no longer exist. Check the last commit date, read the open issues for 403 reports and see which endpoint the code calls before you clone. For research, a maintained tool that uses your own Reddit session avoids the problem. BigIdeasDB does this.
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit comment scraper for AI research. Its fetch_post_comments tool loads a full comment thread through your own logged-in Chrome, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can group, quote and summarise the replies. The anonymous alternative is a thread RSS feed, which returned entries in our test but ends on Reddit's stated date of November 13, 2026.
Turn on the BigIdeasDB Reddit Connector and ask your AI client to call fetch_subreddit with a subreddit, a sort and a time window. On October 24, 2026 a top-of-the-week call for r/webscraping returned the 3 posts we asked for. For a light read without an account, a subreddit RSS feed works until November 13, 2026.
Reddit says new public API requests stop on October 31, 2026, RSS ends November 13, 2026, and remaining public access ends in March 2027. After those dates, the route Reddit has not announced an end for is a logged-in browser session. The BigIdeasDB Reddit Connector fetches through your own session at about one request per second, with no API keys or approval wait.
Reddit says you may use its content for non-commercial purposes such as learning and community, and that commercial use needs its written approval. Its Responsible Builder Policy also bans unapproved AI training on Reddit data. Bulk collection is what Reddit says it targets. This is not legal advice, so read the policies and keep volumes at a human pace.
No. The BigIdeasDB Reddit scraper is built for research at a human pace, roughly one fetch per second, driven by questions your AI client asks. Bulk or excessive use is against the BigIdeasDB Terms. For dataset-scale work, apply for Reddit approval or a data license. Chrome must be running, and the feature needs BigIdeasDB Pro.
