Thunderbit reads the Reddit page. BigIdeasDB returns Reddit's own JSON to your AI client. We compared how each fetches Reddit, what each returns, and what each costs, on October 24, 2026.
The best Thunderbit alternative for Reddit is BigIdeasDB. Thunderbit is a general AI web scraper that reads the Reddit page open in your browser and turns it into rows. BigIdeasDB is built for Reddit. It returns Reddit’s own structured JSON (exact score, upvote_ratio, num_comments, created_utc and ids) to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, and after Reddit’s 2026 update it is the only Reddit scraper still working, thanks to a proprietary session-based method.
We did not run Thunderbit on Reddit, so this page does not claim that it fails. It shows what we can document: how Thunderbit says it fetches, what it charges, what it returns, what its own Reddit guide admits, and what users have written about it, each with a date. Then it shows what BigIdeasDB returned on October 24, 2026.
Nobody ranking for “thunderbit alternative” covers Reddit. The results are review-site lists, other scraping vendors and Thunderbit’s own pages, all general purpose. If Reddit is the job, the comparison below is the one that matters.
That is a claim about Reddit, not about web scraping in general. For a lead list from a business directory or prices from a store, Thunderbit is a reasonable tool and BigIdeasDB is not one. The full ranking for the Reddit job is on our best Reddit scraper in 2026 page. This page is the head-to-head.
One question decides whether a Reddit scraper works in 2026. Does it fetch Reddit logged out, from a server, script or cloud worker? If yes, it runs into the block Reddit put on its .json endpoints. Reddit stopped serving logged-out .json in late May 2026. On October 24, 2026 we sent three logged-out JSON requests and all three returned the same 403 block page of about 190 KB. The full test is on our Reddit scraper page and the diagnosis is in why Reddit JSON returns 403.
Here is what each product says about how it fetches. These come from Thunderbit’s own pages and docs, read on October 24, 2026.
| Route | How it gets Reddit, per its own docs | Logged-out server fetch? |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbit Chrome extension | You open the Reddit post in Chrome, open the extension, and it reads the page and builds a table | No, it reads your open tab |
| Thunderbit API and MCP server | You send a URL; Thunderbit fetches it from its infrastructure and handles “JavaScript rendering, anti-bot protection, geo-routing, and proxy rotation”. Its docs do not mention Reddit | Server-side fetch of a URL; Reddit behavior not documented and not tested by us |
| BigIdeasDB MCP tools and Clipper Reddit Connector | A proprietary session-based method returns Reddit’s own JSON through your own logged-in Chrome | No |
So the extension and BigIdeasDB both avoid the logged-out server block, by different means. The extension reads what your browser renders. BigIdeasDB reads what Reddit itself serves to a signed-in browser, which is the structured data underneath the page. That difference is the next section.
Thunderbit’s own Reddit guide is candid about the block. It lists Thunderbit as working as of April 2026, and it says this about the .json route:
“In my own testing this month, direct requests to public Reddit .json endpoints returned 403 responses.” – Thunderbit's Reddit scraper GitHub guide, dated June 1, 2026
That matches what we measured. Where Thunderbit’s guide calls the extension the “path of least resistance”, it is describing a rendered-page approach, not a data approach.
A page scraper reads what Reddit paints on the screen. A JSON read returns what Reddit’s own systems send to build that screen. For research, the second is better, because it carries exact values and ids, not a rounded label next to an arrow.
Here is a real BigIdeasDB result from October 24, 2026. A fetch_subreddit call for r/webscraping, top of the week, limit 2, returned two posts. Each one carried the fields below.
| Data point | BigIdeasDB result (Reddit JSON) | What Thunderbit’s pages say it extracts |
|---|---|---|
| Post id | Yes, Reddit’s own id | Not listed |
| Title and full post text | Yes, title and full selftext | Titles, text and snippets |
| Score | Exact integer (136 and 115 in our call) | Vote counts, upvotes |
| upvote_ratio | Yes (0.99 and 0.97 in our call) | Not listed |
| num_comments | Exact (7 and 25 in our call) | Reply counts (comments tool) |
| Timestamp | created_utc, an exact epoch time | Timestamps |
| Author and subreddit | Yes, as separate fields | Author usernames and subreddit names |
| Permalink and thread links | Yes, a full URL per post and comment | Thread links |
| Comment score and timestamp | Yes, per comment | Not listed on the comments page |
| Raw listing and any Reddit JSON path | Yes, through fetch_reddit_json | Not applicable to a page scraper |
Read the right-hand column carefully. Thunderbit does list vote counts, authors, timestamps and reply counts, so a page scrape gets you many of the same headings. The gaps are in what a rendered page can show. Four limits apply to any tool that reads the screen:
The JSON route is the structure Reddit itself uses, and Reddit closed it to logged-out requests. BigIdeasDB’s proprietary method reaches it anyway, through a signed-in session. That is the core of the product, and we keep the mechanism private. What you see is the result: Reddit’s fields, in Reddit’s format, ready for an AI client to group, count and quote. For the full field and tool list, see how to scrape Reddit with MCP.
| Dimension | BigIdeasDB | Thunderbit |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Reddit research with an AI client | Any website into a spreadsheet |
| How it gets Reddit | Reddit’s own JSON, proprietary session-based method | Reads the rendered page in your tab (extension) |
| Reddit-specific tools | 4: search, subreddit, comments, raw JSON | Reddit templates and a comments tool page; MCP is general purpose |
| Data precision | Exact score, upvote_ratio, num_comments, created_utc, ids | What the page shows; fields chosen by AI |
| Comments | fetch_post_comments loads a thread by URL | Says it extracts nested comments; depth not tested by us |
| Pricing model | Flat, included with Pro ($49/month or $349 lifetime) | Credits, 1 per output row on the extension |
| AI client integration | MCP into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor | MCP server (distill, extract), Cursor, Claude Desktop, VS Code and others |
| Export | The AI client returns it; no spreadsheet connector | Excel, Sheets, Airtable, Notion, CSV, JSON |
| Scheduling | No | Yes, on paid plans |
| Other websites | No, Reddit only | Yes, any site |
| After Reddit’s 2026 update | Working, tested Oct 24, 2026 | Extension listed as working in its own April 2026 audit; not tested by us |
| Limits | Needs Pro and Chrome running; human pace of about one fetch per second; not for bulk | Credits run out; plan limits on pages, URLs and schedules |
Thunderbit meters by the row. Its pricing page on October 24, 2026 listed three plans for the extension: Free, Starter and Pro.
| Plan | Price | Credits | One 800-comment thread uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thunderbit Free | $0 | 6 pages a month, max 30 credits per page | Not possible on one page |
| Thunderbit Starter | $9 a month, billed yearly | 5,000 credits a year | About 800 credits, 16% of a year |
| Thunderbit Pro | $16.50 a month, billed yearly (listed at $24, marked limited time) | 30,000 credits a year | About 800 credits, 2.7% of a year |
| BigIdeasDB Pro | $49 a month or $349 lifetime | No per-row credits | One fetch_post_comments call, at a human pace |
The arithmetic assumes each comment becomes one output row, which is how Thunderbit’s own comparison describes extension credits. Subpage extraction costs 2 credits per row in that same document. If you read ten such threads a month on Starter, you need 8,000 credits and have 417 a month. That is a cost problem for comment-heavy research, and it is the one honest pricing advantage a flat plan has.
The flat plan has its own catch, and we state it. BigIdeasDB is not a bulk scraper. It runs at about one fetch per second through your own session, built for questions an AI client asks, and bulk use is against the BigIdeasDB Terms. On sticker price Thunderbit is cheaper for light use: its Pro plan is $16.50 a month on yearly billing, and the free tier costs nothing. For heavy comment reading, credits run out and a flat plan wins. Use code SAVE20 on BigIdeasDB at checkout.
We went looking for dated evidence that Thunderbit’s Reddit scraping fails. Here is everything we found, with what each source does and does not show.
| Source and date | What it says | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome Web Store, October 24, 2026 | Rating of 3.7 out of 5. Thunderbit’s own July 28, 2026 comparison cited 4.2 out of 5 from 193 ratings | Why it moved; the rating is across all uses, not Reddit |
| Chrome Web Store reviews, September 24 and October 5, 2026 | Two complaints about unexpected charges, duplicate data wasting credits and no support reply | Neither review mentions Reddit |
| Chrome Web Store reviews, September to October 21, 2026 | Several positive reviews on ease and speed, for example “Powerful tool and fairly priced.” | None mention Reddit |
| r/Make thread, November 3, 2025 | A user trying to scrape Reddit posts and comments listed four tools they tried, Thunderbit among them, and wrote that they could not get any of them to work | Which tool failed and why; this is before Reddit’s late May 2026 change |
| Thunderbit Reddit guide, dated June 1, 2026 | Lists the extension as working (April 2026 audit) and says logged-out .json returned 403 | Any test after April 2026; it is Thunderbit’s own claim |
The two sharpest reviews are about billing and credits, not Reddit. One, dated October 5, 2026, reads:
“Unexpected charges were applied without notice, and the tool constantly loops duplicate data, wasting credits for nothing.” – a Chrome Web Store review, October 5, 2026
A second review, dated September 24, 2026, described an unresolved billing dispute:
“Despite attempting to resolve these issues through customer support, I have received no adequate response or effective assistance.” – a Chrome Web Store review, September 24, 2026
The Reddit-specific report is older and thinner. In r/Make on November 3, 2025, one person described trying four tools on Reddit:
“But every tool I try, I just get blocked by Reddit.” – r/Make, November 2025
That poster named Thunderbit in the list and did not say which tool failed how. We do not read it as proof about Thunderbit alone, and it predates Reddit’s 2026 change. We found no review, thread or Thunderbit statement dated after May 2026 saying its Reddit extraction broke. So the honest verdict is narrow. Thunderbit’s Reddit reliability after the update is unproven in either direction, its rating has fallen, recent complaints are about credits and support, and its extension reads a page rather than Reddit’s data. BigIdeasDB, by contrast, returned Reddit data in a dated test on October 24, 2026.
Thunderbit has an MCP server. Its docs list tools to distill a page to Markdown, extract fields from a page with a schema, suggest fields, and run batches of up to 100 URLs. It lists setup for Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cline. Distill costs 1 credit a call and extract costs 20, per the same docs.
That is a general web tool. You give it a Reddit URL, and it fetches that URL from Thunderbit’s infrastructure. Its docs do not mention Reddit, and we have not tested what it returns for one.
BigIdeasDB’s MCP has four tools made for Reddit, and your AI client picks the right one from a plain-English question.
search_reddit searches posts by keyword, in one subreddit or across Reddit.fetch_subreddit reads a subreddit by sort and time window.fetch_post_comments loads a comment thread from a post URL.fetch_reddit_json reads any Reddit JSON path for edge cases. The practical gap is the question you can ask. “Search r/smallbusiness for invoicing threads from the last month, read the top 10 and list the five most repeated complaints with one quote each” is a single prompt with these tools. With a general extractor you first collect URLs, then extract, then analyse. The workflows are in Reddit data for Claude, Cursor and other AI clients, connecting ChatGPT and Claude to Reddit and the Reddit research MCP. For other Reddit MCP options, see the best Reddit MCP servers ranking, and for founders picking an MCP stack, best MCP servers for founders.
Chrome has to be running when your client asks for Reddit. Rate and client notes are in MCP rate limits and clients, and the full tutorial is how to scrape Reddit with MCP. If you were exporting to a spreadsheet, ask your AI client to return the results as a table and paste it into Sheets.
A fair comparison says where the other tool wins. Thunderbit is the better choice in these cases.
If Reddit research is your job, with comment threads, exact counts and an AI client doing the analysis, BigIdeasDB is built for it. Many people will want both, one for general scraping and one for Reddit. For a ScrapeBadger comparison on the same terms, see our ScrapeBadger alternative page.
Thunderbit ranks for several narrow Reddit searches: reddit post scraper, reddit thread scraper, reddit text scraper, reddit scraper online and download reddit comments. Each is a single job with a single answer, so here are the short ones.
fetch_subreddit or search_reddit.fetch_post_comments and keep the text as returned. For code-based options, see Reddit scraper in Python and Reddit scraper on GitHub. If you still want the official route, how to get a Reddit API key, the PRAW alternative and the Reddit API alternative for AI explain the trade-offs.
Thunderbit’s own free plan is the first free option: 6 pages a month, per its pricing page. Beyond that, three routes exist, each with a catch.
| Route | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbit Free | $0 | 6 pages a month; Reddit result after the update not tested by us |
| Anonymous RSS | Free | Listings and single threads only; ends November 13, 2026, per Reddit’s timeline |
| Approved Reddit API app | Free for non-commercial use | Approval needed; new requests stop October 31, 2026 |
| BigIdeasDB Reddit scraper | Included with Pro: $49 a month or $349 lifetime | Paid; Chrome running; human pace |
If you want a Reddit scraper that is free and still works after November 13, none exists. The free routes have end dates or caps. The working option is paid. For keyword work that costs nothing, try the free Reddit keyword research tool.
Every number on this page traces to a row below. We did not run Thunderbit. Where a source cannot support a claim, the limitation column says so.
| Source | What we used it for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbit pricing page | Free, Starter and Pro prices and credits | Yearly billing view; Thunderbit also shows other prices for monthly billing and runs limited-time offers |
| Thunderbit Reddit Post Comments Scraper and Reddit Post Scraper pages | How the extension is used and the fields it says it extracts | Marketing pages; we did not verify output |
| Thunderbit Reddit scraper GitHub guide (dated June 1, 2026) | The 403 admission and the April 2026 status | Thunderbit’s own claim; the audit predates our test by six months |
| Thunderbit API and MCP docs | Tools, credit costs and the server-side fetch description | Docs do not mention Reddit; we did not run the API |
| Thunderbit comparison article (fact-checked July 28, 2026) | 1 credit per output row, 4.2 rating from 193 ratings | Published by Thunderbit, a commercial interest |
| Chrome Web Store listing and reviews | The 3.7 rating and the dated review quotes | Self-selected reviews; about a dozen of the newest were shown to us; none mention Reddit |
| r/Make thread, November 3, 2025 | The one Reddit-specific user report | One person, four tools, before the May 2026 change; does not isolate Thunderbit |
| BigIdeasDB fetch_subreddit and fetch_post_comments calls, Oct 24, 2026 | The field list and the 2-post result | Two calls, one account; shows availability, not scale or future behavior |
| BigIdeasDB logged-out request test, Oct 24, 2026 | 3 of 3 JSON URLs returned 403 | One run, one IP, one date; see the Reddit scraper page |
| Google results for “thunderbit alternative” and “thunderbit reddit scraper”, US, Oct 24, 2026 | What ranks and related searches | One market, one day |
This page does not claim that Thunderbit fails on Reddit, that Reddit will keep its stated dates, or that any route is approved by Reddit for your use. Reddit says non-commercial use is open and commercial use needs written approval, and bulk collection is what it targets. This is not legal advice. Our own method stays private by design. See how to scrape Reddit in 2026 for the full legal reading.
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads, returning Reddit’s own JSON fields through your logged-in Chrome. No Reddit API keys, no per-row credits, paced at a human speed. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20.
See BigIdeasDB plans →Read the setup guide →BigIdeasDB is the best Thunderbit alternative for Reddit scraping. Instead of reading the rendered Reddit page, it returns Reddit's own JSON fields (score, upvote_ratio, num_comments, created_utc, ids) through four MCP tools and the Clipper Reddit Connector. On October 24, 2026 its fetch_subreddit and fetch_post_comments calls returned data, and it needs no per-row credits.
BigIdeasDB is the best Thunderbit alternative if you want Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to read Reddit directly. It ships four Reddit-specific MCP tools (search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments, fetch_reddit_json), so the AI client asks Reddit questions in plain English. Thunderbit's MCP server is general purpose (distill, extract, suggest fields) and its docs do not mention Reddit.
We did not test it, so we cannot say. Thunderbit's extension reads the Reddit page open in your own Chrome tab, and its own June 2026 guide lists it as working. The same guide says direct requests to Reddit .json endpoints returned 403 in its own testing. Thunderbit's API and MCP fetch from its servers, and its docs do not list Reddit.
Per Thunderbit's pricing page on October 24, 2026: Free is 6 pages a month, Starter is $9 a month billed yearly for 5,000 credits a year, and Pro is $16.50 a month billed yearly for 30,000 credits a year. Thunderbit's own comparison says 1 credit is 1 output row, so an 800-comment thread would use about 800 credits.
Thunderbit has its own free tier of 6 pages a month. Anonymous RSS feeds still served subreddit listings in our October 24, 2026 test, but Reddit ends RSS on November 13, 2026. The working option is BigIdeasDB, which is included with Pro at $49 a month or $349 lifetime. A fully free Reddit scraper that survives November 13 does not exist.
BigIdeasDB is better for Reddit research because it reads Reddit's structured JSON through a proprietary session-based method and hands it to your AI client. Thunderbit is better if you scrape many different websites into a spreadsheet, schedule scrapes, or want no AI client at all. Pick by job: Reddit research with AI, or general web-to-table extraction.
Any Reddit scraper extension reads pages as you, so check what it reads and where it sends it. The BigIdeasDB Clipper Reddit Connector is off until you turn it on and fetches through your own logged-in session at about one request per second. Reddit's policies still apply to your use, and this is not legal advice.
Yes. Open the thread in Chrome and use a comment exporter, or ask an AI client with the BigIdeasDB Reddit tools to load the thread with fetch_post_comments and return the comments with scores and timestamps. Keep volumes at a human pace. Reddit says bulk collection is what it targets, and commercial use needs written approval.
