Reddit Connector: Reddit tools through your own browser
Reddit now blocks logged-out requests to its public data, so the four BigIdeasDB Reddit MCP tools fetch Reddit through your own browser instead. Turn on the Reddit Connector in the Clipper extension once, keep Chrome open, and your AI client can search and read Reddit again.

Quick answer
The Reddit Connector is a switch in the BigIdeasDB Clipper Chrome extension (version 1.2.0 or later). When it is on, the Reddit MCP tools (search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments, fetch_reddit_json) are fetched by your own Chrome using your Reddit login, then returned to your AI client. No Reddit API keys or developer account are needed.
- One-time setup: Clipper popup, Reddit tab, Turn on Reddit Connector.
- Uses your own reddit.com login in Chrome. No Reddit API keys.
- Chrome must be open (it can be in the background) when your AI calls a Reddit tool.
- Only the reddit.com pages your AI asks for are fetched, and only while it is on.

Turn it on
- 1
Install or update Clipper
Install the BigIdeasDB Clipper from the Chrome Web Store, or let Chrome update it to version 1.2.0 or later. See the Clipper extension.
- 2
Log in to reddit.com in Chrome
Use the same Chrome profile you have Clipper in. The connector reads Reddit as you.
- 3
Open the Reddit tab
Click the Clipper icon in your toolbar and open the Reddit tab.
- 4
Turn on Reddit Connector
Click Turn on Reddit Connector and accept Chrome's prompt for reddit.com access.
- 5
Test the connection
Click Test connection. You should see "connected as u/yourname". If it says you are not logged in, log in to reddit.com and test again.
Then just ask your AI
With the connector on, prompts like "search Reddit for complaints about invoicing apps" work again in Claude, Cursor, or any client connected to the BigIdeasDB MCP.
How it works
When your AI client calls a Reddit tool, BigIdeasDB sends a silent wake-up message to your Clipper extension. Clipper fetches the requested reddit.com page in your browser, using your Reddit login, and sends the result back so the MCP can answer your AI. Nothing runs in between requests.
- Only reddit.com pages are ever fetched, and only ones your AI client asked for.
- Results are passed straight back to your AI and deleted from our servers once delivered.
- Fetches are paced to about one per second so your account browses Reddit at a normal speed.
- Turning the connector off removes the reddit.com permission from Clipper.
Why your browser and not our servers
Reddit returns an error to logged-out automated requests for its public data. Requests from your own logged-in browser are treated like your normal browsing, which is why the connector works where a server cannot.
Troubleshooting
- "Your Reddit Connector didn't respond": open Chrome. It can run in the background, but it has to be running.
- "Log in to reddit.com in Chrome": you are logged out of Reddit in that Chrome profile. Log in and retry.
- The Reddit tab says Off after you turned it on: Chrome's permission prompt was dismissed. Turn it on again and accept the prompt.
- A Reddit tool says live Reddit fetching is unavailable: the connector has not been turned on for your account yet. Follow "Turn it on" above.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Reddit API keys or a Reddit developer account?
No. The connector uses your normal reddit.com login in Chrome. There are no Reddit API keys, apps, or developer accounts involved.
Does Chrome need to be open?
Yes. Chrome has to be running when your AI client calls a Reddit tool, but it can be in the background with no windows open. If Chrome is closed, the tool replies that the connector did not respond.
What does the connector access?
Only reddit.com pages that your own AI client requests through the BigIdeasDB MCP. Clipper's copy features keep working locally as before, and you can turn the connector off at any time from the Reddit tab.
Which tools use the connector?
The four Reddit tools: search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments and fetch_reddit_json. Every other BigIdeasDB MCP tool queries BigIdeasDB's own data and works without it.
