Search Demand Lab guide

The Search Demand Lab asks the public suggestion boxes what people type after your phrase, and shows the shape of the answers: which questions exist, which letters are rich, and whether people are learning, comparing or ready to buy. It has no search volume, and it says so.

Last updated: November 1, 2026

Quick answer

Add a phrase, choose the places to look, and press Check now. For each place the Lab asks about 54 questions about the phrase, one at a time. Question map, Alphabet grid, Intent, Keywords and Changes show what came back.

  • Places: Google, YouTube, Amazon and Google Play suggestion boxes.
  • 54 requests per phrase per place: the phrase, a to z, 12 question words, 12 modifiers and 3 comparisons.
  • A suggestion count is a proxy, not a count of searches.
  • If a place asks us to slow down, the Lab slows down and stops. Nothing works around a block.

Start with the sample

Open the sample for a freelancer invoicing phrase with two generated checks a week apart. It works offline and shows every view, including Changes.

Add a phrase and check

Add a phrase and turn places on or off under Places to look. Press Check now. The Lab shows the request count and a time estimate first. A probe asked for today is skipped, so checking twice in a day costs nothing extra.

The views

  • Question map: a two ring chart. The inner ring is the families found around the phrase (how, what, why, can, best, vs, for, price, near me, alternative, free). The outer ring is the phrases in the family you pick.
  • Alphabet grid: letters and modifier families against places, shaded by how many distinct suggestions each probe returned. An empty row shows where the box says nothing. A probe never asked is missing, not zero.
  • Intent: a stacked bar per place and overall: learn, compare, price and plans, fix a problem, near me and browse. These are word-list rules, and your AI can refine the tags.
  • Keywords: every distinct suggestion with its family, intent tags and how many probes returned it, with a text filter.
  • Changes: suggestions that are new since the last check, grouped by family, and those that dropped.

Pin, watch and ask

Pin one suggestion or a whole family to the evidence board, labelled as search suggestions. Turn on the weekly re-check for a phrase (only while Desktop is open). Every action is an MCP tool: see the Search Demand Lab group in the tools reference.

Suggestions are not search counts

A suggestion count says how often a phrase appeared in what the box offered across the probes we tried. The Lab shows no volume or difficulty, because it has no honest source for them.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Lab show how many people search a phrase?

No. It shows what the suggestion boxes offer, and labels any count as a proxy. It has no search volume.

Which places does it ask?

The public suggestion boxes of Google, YouTube, Amazon and Google Play, one request at a time.

How is intent decided?

By word lists for learn, compare, price and plans, fix a problem, near me and browse. They are rules, not a model, and your own AI can refine them.

What happens if a place blocks the checks?

The Lab shows a slow-down notice and stops. It does not try to get around a block. Try again later.

What's the best tool for finding the questions people type about an idea?

The BigIdeasDB Desktop Search Demand Lab. It maps the questions, groups them by intent, tracks what changed week to week, and is honest that suggestions are not search counts.
