How to use this glossary
The terms below apply consistently across all of BigIdeasDB. A metric like MRR means the same thing whether you see it in the free calculators, in TrustMRR, or in a Reddit-pipeline result, and a product name like Funded DB or the MCP refers to the same feature everywhere in the docs.
- Metrics (MRR, ARR, churn, CAC, LTV, profit multiple) describe the money side of a SaaS.
- Scoring terms (pain point, severity score, market gap score, validated idea, MVP) describe how BigIdeasDB turns raw complaints into ranked opportunities.
- Product names (TrustMRR, Funded DB, Stripe Index, SellSide DB, BuildGuide, BuildHub, the MCP, Reddit pipeline) are the parts of the platform.
Revenue is in dollars
Everywhere BigIdeasDB reports MRR and other revenue figures, the values are in US dollars, not cents. Read them directly.
- MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue)
- The predictable revenue a subscription business earns each month. It is the core metric for tracking SaaS growth and is reported in dollars across BigIdeasDB's TrustMRR data.
- ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue)
- The annualized version of MRR, usually MRR multiplied by twelve. It expresses recurring subscription revenue on a yearly basis.
- Churn rate
- The percentage of customers or revenue lost over a given period. Lower churn means customers stay longer, which raises lifetime value and makes growth compound.
- CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)
- The average cost to acquire one paying customer, including marketing and sales spend. Healthy SaaS businesses keep CAC well below the lifetime value of the customer.
- LTV (Customer Lifetime Value)
- The total revenue you expect from a customer across their entire relationship with you. Comparing LTV to CAC shows whether your acquisition is profitable.
- Pain point
- A documented, recurring user complaint or frustration extracted from sources like Reddit, G2, Capterra, and Upwork. Pain points are the bottom-up demand evidence BigIdeasDB is built on.
- Market gap score
- An AI-generated score that estimates how large and underserved an opportunity is, based on documented demand and weak existing solutions. Higher scores flag bigger unmet needs.
- Severity score
- A rating of how painful a complaint is, typically on a scale up to 5. High-severity problems (4+/5) are the ones people are most willing to pay to fix.
- Validated idea
- A product idea tied to a documented, recurring, high-severity complaint that people already pay (badly) to solve - the opposite of a brainstormed guess.
- MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
- The narrowest version of a product that solves the core problem and can be charged for. BigIdeasDB encourages scoping an MVP to four weeks or less.
- Profit multiple
- A valuation ratio comparing a business's sale price to its profit. It is used in SellSide DB and TrustMRR deal flow to gauge how expensive an acquisition is.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol)
- An open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data. BigIdeasDB's hosted MCP server exposes 30 tools across 11 data sources to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other clients.
- TrustMRR
- BigIdeasDB's Revenue Intelligence product, tracking thousands of verified SaaS startups with MRR, growth, margins, and AI market analysis. Every answer cites the underlying startup rows.
- Funded DB
- A searchable database of VC- and accelerator-backed portfolio companies across top firms, each with an AI investment thesis, so you can see what the smartest money funds by sector.
- Stripe Index
- A directory of 30,000+ companies live on Stripe and taking payments across 80+ categories. It shows the supply side of demand - who is already monetized in a niche and how crowded it is.
- SellSide DB
- A layer of SaaS acquisition listings used as market validation: if a SaaS is being sold, the market exists. Each listing carries an AI buyer thesis, opportunity signals, and red flags.
- BuildGuide
- An 8-stage, AI-guided founder flow that takes you from idea discovery through market research, competitor analysis, a scoped PRD, validation, a build plan, and a marketing strategy.
- BuildHub
- BigIdeasDB's visual, infinite-canvas project workspace, with smart nodes, AI chat threads, real-time collaboration, and version history for organizing a build.
- Reddit pipeline
- A custom AI monitor for any subreddit that tracks up to 50 keywords and runs up to five times daily, surfacing demand signals and problems as they appear in discussions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pain point and a validated idea?
A pain point is a documented, recurring complaint. A validated idea goes a step further: it is a product concept tied to a high-severity pain point that people already pay to solve, confirmed with revenue, funding, or Stripe supply data.
Why does BigIdeasDB report revenue in dollars?
Across TrustMRR and the calculators, MRR and other revenue figures are stored and shown in US dollars, not cents. You never need to divide by 100 to read them.
What is the difference between MRR and ARR?
MRR is monthly recurring revenue and ARR is its annualized form, usually MRR multiplied by twelve. Founders track MRR for month-to-month movement and cite ARR for a yearly view.
