Reddit Lab guide
The Reddit Lab turns Reddit history into a picture: how much people talk about a problem, where, when it spiked, and what they complain about in their own words. It uses a public archive, so it needs no Reddit login. Every number is a sample of the posts the Lab fetched.

Quick answer
Add a phrase inside a community, such as invoice app in r/smallbusiness, or a whole subreddit, then press Check now. The Lab fetches 12 weeks the first time and the last 4 weeks after that. Volume, Communities, Pain themes, Threads and Changes show the result.
- Reddit history searches inside a community, not all of Reddit, so a phrase needs a subreddit.
- A week that hits 100 posts is flagged as capped.
- Pain themes are counted by rules. Your AI can refine them.
- No author names are stored or shown.

Start with the sample
Press Open the sample for three saved searches around a meal logging idea with twelve weeks of generated posts. It works with no network. Remove it from the Lab when you are done.
Add a search
Add a phrase inside one subreddit, or a whole subreddit. Reddit history only searches words inside one community. If you type a bare phrase, the Lab offers a few communities to look in and adds up to 3 as separate searches. The Lab shows the number of requests and the time before it runs. Reddit history can ask for a slow-down. The Lab waits, retries, and hands failed weeks back to the queue.
The five views
- Volume: posts per week for up to 5 searches on one scale. Spike weeks (at least 2x the median and 3 posts above it) are marked on the line and listed as text. Weeks that hit the 100 post cap are flagged.
- Communities: a subreddit by week grid showing where the conversation lives and when each community lit up. Click a row to filter the threads.
- Pain themes: complaint themes such as too expensive, takes too long, missing, buggy, clunky, support and gave up, with counts, share of the sample, trend and example quotes.
- Threads: the top threads by engagement (score plus 2 per comment) with a complaint language meter.
- Changes: new posts and new complaint threads since the last check, with a per-theme ladder across checks.
How complaints are found
There is no sentiment score. A post counts as a complaint when it uses phrases from a published word list, and the phrases that matched are shown on each quote. Themes are rule-based families that the app counts itself. Your own AI agent can refine them through the Lab's tools. The Lab says which is which.
Watch, pin and ask
- Turn on the weekly re-check for a search. It runs only while Desktop is open.
- Pin a thread, or a theme with its quotes, to the evidence board.
- Ask Claude, Codex or Cursor to drive the Lab. See the Reddit Lab group in the tools reference.
A sample, not all of Reddit
Counts come from the posts the Lab fetched. A flat top can be the 100 post cap, so the Lab flags capped weeks. Live threads and comments are a different source that needs Clipper.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Reddit account?
No. The Reddit Lab reads a public archive of Reddit history. Reading live threads through your own login is a separate source that needs Clipper.
Why does a phrase need a subreddit?
Reddit history only searches words inside one community. Add the phrase with a subreddit, or let the Lab suggest a few and add up to 3 as separate searches.
Does the Lab score sentiment?
No. It marks complaint language from a transparent phrase list and shows the matched phrases on every quote.
Are the counts all of Reddit?
No. They are a sample of fetched posts, with a cap of 100 a week per search. Capped weeks are flagged so a flat top is not read as a ceiling.
What's the best tool for finding what people complain about on Reddit?
The BigIdeasDB Desktop Reddit Lab. It tracks saved searches over Reddit history, marks spikes, groups complaints into themes with quotes, shows what changed, and keeps everything on your computer.
