Businesses for Sale Lab guide

The Businesses for Sale Lab answers: what are businesses like this asking, and which ones are cheap? It saves listing cards from business marketplaces, plots price against cash flow, and tracks what changed. All figures are the seller's own, and asking prices are not sale prices.

Quick answer

Save a search for a marketplace, optional country site, category and region, then run it. Price vs cash flow, Where, Density, Changes and Listings show the result. Density needs your own free Census key.

  • Multiples are asking price over earnings, and always name the earnings basis.
  • Cash flow (SDE) is used in the US and Canada, net profit in the UK, Australia and South Africa. Bases and currencies are never mixed.
  • BusinessesForSale search pages work directly. BizBuySell and every detail page need Clipper with its Labs switch on.
  • No longer in results never means sold.

Start with the sample

Open the sample: 150 generated listings in 10 industries and 10 states. It works offline and fills every view except Density, which needs Census rows.

Save a search and run it

Save a search, then run it. The Lab shows the request count and time at the site's pace, which is one page every few seconds. If a site blocks the plain request, switch on the Labs source in Clipper and run again. Pages that loaded are saved even if some failed.

The five views

  • Price vs cash flow: one dot per listing, asking price against cash flow, sized by revenue and coloured by multiple band. Lasso a set to compare its median multiple with everything in view.
  • Where: industries against regions, as listing counts or median multiple. Cells with too few listings stay blank.
  • Density: Census counts of business locations next to your saved listings, by state, with an under-served hint where establishments are many and listings are few. It needs your free Census key from Settings, stored encrypted on your computer and never shown to the AI.
  • Changes: for a saved search, new listings, price drops from first to latest asking price, and listings no longer in results.
  • Listings: the table with every parsed field. Open a listing for its price history, pin it, or open the original.

Honest limits

  • Asking prices, not sale prices. Multiples use the seller's own figures.
  • There is no population in the Census data, so nothing is per capita. The Lab shows listings per 1,000 establishments.
  • Listings with no disclosed price or earnings are left out of the chart and counted.
  • Under-served is a hint, not a verdict.

Pin, watch and ask

Pin a listing to the evidence board as a buy instead of build card, labelled as an asking price. Turn on the weekly re-check for a search (only while Desktop is open). Every action is an MCP tool: see the Businesses for Sale Lab group in the tools reference.

Frequently asked questions

Are these sale prices?

No. They are asking prices, and the multiples use the seller's own figures.

Why does the Lab keep earnings bases apart?

Cash flow (SDE) in the US and Canada and net profit in the UK, Australia and South Africa are not the same measure. Groups are never pooled, and currencies are never mixed.

Do I need a Census key?

Only for the Density view. The key is free, you paste it in Settings, and it stays on your computer, encrypted and hidden from the AI.

Does no longer in results mean sold?

No. The listing may have been sold, withdrawn or relisted. The Lab does not know.

What's the best tool for comparing businesses for sale before I buy?

The BigIdeasDB Desktop Businesses for Sale Lab. It plots price against cash flow, shows where listings are cheap, adds Census business density, and tracks price drops for saved searches.
