Communities Lab guide
The Communities Lab shows what builders say about a topic on Hacker News, Stack Exchange and GitHub issues. It needs no account. Each source keeps its own scale, and the Lab says whether a count is exact or a sample.

Quick answer
Add a phrase, pick a Stack Exchange site (the default is Stack Overflow), and press Check now. The first check fetches 12 months, then the last 3. Pulse, Unanswered, Most wanted, Discussions, Pain themes and Changes show the result.
- Hacker News and GitHub months are exact counts of the search.
- Stack Exchange months are samples of up to 100, flagged when full.
- GitHub allows 10 searches a minute and Stack Exchange 300 a day without an account, so checks run slowly on purpose.
- Items keep a title, a short snippet and counts, never authors.
Start with the sample
Open the sample for two saved searches around an invoicing idea, with twelve months on each source. It works offline.
Add a search and check
Add a phrase. The Lab searches Hacker News, one Stack Exchange site and GitHub issues. Press Check now to see the request count and the time estimate before it runs. A month already fetched today is skipped. If a community asks for a slow-down, the check continues more slowly, and a GitHub wait is named.
The views
- Pulse: mentions per month, one lane per source on a shared month axis, each with its own scale and a note saying exact count or sample. Spike months are marked.
- Unanswered (Stack Exchange): questions plotted by age and views, with state: no answer, answered but not accepted, or accepted. High views and still open is the corner to read.
- Most wanted (GitHub): issues by reactions against age, with open feature requests ringed, so a young request with many reactions stands out from an old one that had time.
- Discussions (Hacker News): points against comments, split into Ask HN, Show HN and plain stories. High comments on few points is an argument. High points on few comments is a link people liked.
- Pain themes: rule-based families such as missing feature, broken, slow, confusing docs, price, integration, manual work and frustrated, counted across the sources with a split by source and example quotes.
- Changes: new items per source since the last check. The first check is the baseline.
Pin, watch and ask
Pin a story, question, issue or a theme with its quotes to the evidence board. Turn on the weekly re-check (only while Desktop is open). Every action is an MCP tool: see the Communities Lab group in the tools reference.
Exact or sampled, per source
A month never fetched is empty, not zero. Sources are never added together on one axis, because they differ in size and in how the count is made.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need accounts or API keys?
No. The Lab uses the public search of each community without an account.
Which counts are exact?
Hacker News and GitHub months are the sites' own totals for the search. Stack Exchange months are samples of up to 100 and are flagged when full.
Why is a check slow?
GitHub allows 10 searches a minute and Stack Exchange 300 a day without an account. The Lab shows the request count and time before it runs, and you can keep working.
Can I choose a Stack Exchange site?
Yes, one site per saved search. The default is Stack Overflow.
What's the best tool for finding what developers want built?
The BigIdeasDB Desktop Communities Lab. It shows unanswered questions, the most wanted GitHub issues and Hacker News debates side by side, labels exact counts versus samples, and runs on your computer.
