Reddit's 2026 update broke most Reddit MCP servers. We compared eight on API keys, the October 31 cutoff, the 403 block, hosted vs local, read vs write and upkeep.
The best Reddit MCP server in 2026 is BigIdeasDB. It is the only one we found still working after Reddit’s update, it is hosted, it needs no Reddit API key, and it works in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through the Reddit Connector in the BigIdeasDB Clipper. The open-source servers below either need a Reddit app you can no longer newly request or lean on anonymous access that Reddit now blocks.
Here is the one fact that decides this ranking. Reddit shut off logged-out .json in late May 2026, new API access requests stop on October 31, and RSS ends on November 13. A Reddit MCP server is only as good as the door it uses. BigIdeasDB uses a proprietary session-based method, and the dated test is on our Reddit scraper page. This page compares the servers. For setup steps, use the Reddit MCP setup tutorial.
On October 24, 2026 the first page of Google for “reddit mcp server” was GitHub repositories, MCP directory listings and r/mcp threads. The “best” searches returned general threads about favorite MCP servers, not a Reddit comparison. Most of the repos describe their tools, and several never mention the 403 block. This page rates each server on what Reddit now allows.
The ranking, in one line each. Full ratings follow in the table.
A Reddit MCP server fetches Reddit data for your AI client. Under the hood it uses one of three doors: anonymous endpoints, RSS, or the official Data API with an app. In 2026 Reddit narrowed all three.
| Date | What changed | Which Reddit MCP servers it hits |
|---|---|---|
| Late 2025 | Self-service app creation closed. New apps need manual approval | Every server that needs a client ID and secret, for new users |
| Late May 2026 | Logged-out .json stops working and returns a 403 block page | Servers that read Reddit anonymously |
| October 31, 2026 | New public API access requests are no longer accepted | API and PRAW-based servers, for anyone without existing credentials |
| November 13, 2026 | Reddit stops supporting RSS feeds | RSS-based servers and the no-key mode of reddit-mcp-buddy and reddit-mcp-server |
The 403 is the one most people hit first. On October 24, 2026 we sent three plain logged-out JSON requests and all three returned a 403 block page. The full test is on why a Reddit .json URL returns 403. The RSS date is covered in Reddit RSS feeds are ending on November 13.
That gives four questions that sort every Reddit MCP server. Does it need an API key? Does it depend on anonymous access? Does it run in the cloud or on your laptop? Can it write as well as read? We rate each server on those four, plus whether anyone is still maintaining it.
The table is the whole comparison in one place. “Last push” is the date of the latest commit on the default branch, from the repository’s public metadata on October 24, 2026.
| # | Server | Needs a Reddit API key? | Hit by the Oct 31 cutoff or the logged-out 403? | Hosted or local | Read or write | Search | Last push |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | BigIdeasDB | No | No. Returned data on Oct 24, 2026 | Hosted MCP. Fetches run through your Chrome | Read only | Yes | Clipper live Oct 19, 2026 |
| 2 | reddit-mcp-buddy | Optional for browsing. Needed for search, comments, users | Partly. No-key mode is RSS and ends Nov 13. The key path needs an approved app | Local | Read only | Yes, with keys | Aug 17, 2026 |
| 3 | reddit-mcp-server (jordanburke) | Yes, client ID and secret | Yes. Its README says anonymous API access now returns 403 and new apps need approval | Local, or self-hosted over HTTP | Read and write | Yes, with keys | Oct 17, 2026 |
| 4 | mcp-reddit (adhikasp) | None documented. Optional credentials in the source | Likely. Documented setup is anonymous | Local | Read only | No | May 11, 2025 |
| 5 | mcp-server-reddit (Hawstein) | None documented | Likely. Documented setup is anonymous | Local | Read only | No | Jun 10, 2026 |
| 6 | reddit-mcp (Arindam200) | Yes, client ID and secret | Yes for new users. Setup says to create an app, which is closed | Local | Read and write | Yes, with keys | Dec 21, 2025 |
| 7 | reddit-mcp (GeLi2001) | Yes, client ID and secret | Yes for new users. Same app-creation step | Local | Read only | Yes, with keys | Sep 1, 2025 |
| 8 | reddit-mcp (achetronic) | No | Likely. It reads the public JSON endpoints that returned 403 in our test | Local, stdio or HTTP | Read only | Yes | Jun 30, 2026 |
Two patterns stand out. First, every row except the first runs on your own machine and talks to Reddit from your own IP. That is fine for a weekend project and a problem the moment Reddit blocks the path they use. Second, the servers that need keys depend on a door Reddit is closing to new users. Existing credentials keep working for now, which is why a maintained server such as reddit-mcp-server is still a good pick if you already have them.
Verdict: the best Reddit MCP server in 2026 and the only one we found working after the update. It is the one we use, so weigh that, and check the dated test yourself.
| Criterion | Rating |
|---|---|
| Reddit API key | None. No Reddit developer app, no OAuth, no approval wait |
| Oct 31 cutoff and the 403 | Not affected. A proprietary session-based method, not anonymous access and not the Data API |
| Hosted or local | Hosted MCP server at one URL. Reddit fetches go through the Reddit Connector in your own Chrome |
| Read or write | Read only. It never posts, votes or messages |
| Tools | search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments, fetch_reddit_json |
| Clients | Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and any hosted MCP client |
| Maintained | Yes. The Clipper with the Reddit Connector shipped on the Chrome Web Store on October 19, 2026 |
| Cost | Included with BigIdeasDB Pro, $49 a month or $349 lifetime. Use code SAVE20 |
What works, from our own calls on October 24, 2026. search_reddit returned 10 posts for a query about Reddit MCP servers. fetch_post_comments loaded a 31-comment r/ClaudeAI thread and its top-level comments. Both calls returned data while the logged-out JSON requests returned 403.
What it does that the others do not. The Reddit tools are one of 13 data sources in the same MCP, so a thread can be checked against 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores in the same chat. Reddit is also the most used part of our MCP. Our MCP feature page and the Reddit MCP page list the full tool set, and Reddit market research with an MCP server shows the workflow.
The limits, stated plainly. It needs BigIdeasDB Pro. Chrome must be running with the Reddit Connector on and a Reddit login in that profile, so it is not for a headless server job. Fetches are paced at a human speed, about one per second, so it is a research tool and not a bulk dataset scraper. If you need to post or comment, it cannot help. For the 5-minute setup in Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT, use how to scrape Reddit with MCP, and for the extension itself see the Reddit Connector guide.
Verdict: the best free Reddit MCP server you can run yourself, and the server behind the “reddit mcp buddy” searches. It is honest about its limits, which is rare.
reddit-mcp-buddy is a TypeScript server with about 865 stars and 107 forks on GitHub, last pushed on August 17, 2026. It installs as a one-click Claude Desktop extension file or with npx -y reddit-mcp-buddy, and it has five tools: browse a subreddit, search, get post details with comments, analyze a user, and explain Reddit terms.
| Mode | What you need | What works | Rate limit it states |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anonymous | Nothing | Browse a subreddit from RSS. Scores, comment counts and NSFW flags come back null | 10 per minute, and a stricter per-IP RSS throttle |
| App only | Client ID and secret | Search, comments, user analysis, full metrics | 60 per minute |
| Authenticated | ID, secret, username and password | Everything, at the highest limit | 100 per minute |
The honest read. It is read-only, it is local, and its zero-setup promise now means “browse subreddits from RSS with no scores”. Search and comments need credentials, which Reddit stopped handing out in late 2025, and the RSS mode ends on November 13, 2026. If you already hold a Reddit app, it is a clean, well-documented server. If you do not, you get a subreddit reader with a November expiry date.
Verdict: the best choice if you need to post, and the most actively maintained repo here. It is also the top Google result for “reddit mcp server”.
It is a TypeScript server with about 301 stars, last pushed on October 17, 2026, a week before this page. It has ten read tools and eight write tools: create post, reply, edit post, edit comment, save, unsave, delete post and delete comment. It adds a safe mode that is on by default, with write delays and duplicate detection, and an optional bot disclosure footer. It excludes voting and private messaging on purpose.
It is also the one README that plainly states the new reality. It says anonymous mode no longer works because Reddit blocks unauthenticated API requests with a 403, that OAuth credentials are now required, and that self-service app creation closed in November 2025. Without credentials it falls back to RSS for browsing only, at about one request per minute, with scores and comment counts at zero.
The trade is simple. You get the broadest toolset and the best upkeep, and you need credentials that new users cannot easily get. It can run local or as a self-hosted HTTP server in Docker. If you want posting plus research, pair it with a research tool. If you only want research, BigIdeasDB is a simpler path, and the guide to getting a Reddit API key explains what the approval route looks like now.
Verdict: a fine example of the early Reddit MCP pattern, but nothing has changed in it since May 2025, so check it before you rely on it.
It is a Python server with about 433 stars and 55 forks, installed with uvx. It has two tools: fetch hot threads from a subreddit and fetch post content with comments. It handles text, link and gallery posts. There is no search tool.
The README setup passes an empty environment, so no keys are documented. The source builds its client from optional credentials (a client ID, a secret and a refresh token) and uses whatever is set, so with none it reads Reddit as an anonymous client. That is the path Reddit started blocking in May 2026, and the last commit predates the block by a year. We did not run it, so treat our “likely affected” rating as a reasoned call, not a measured failure.
Verdict: a tidy read-only server with the widest set of listing tools, but no search and no documented credentials.
It is a Python server with about 184 stars and 40 forks, last pushed on June 10, 2026. It has eight tools: frontpage posts, subreddit info, and hot, new, top and rising posts for one subreddit, plus post content and post comments. It runs on a library that calls Reddit’s public API, and the README lists no client ID or secret.
That makes it the lowest-friction server on this list and the one most exposed to the logged-out block, since the README documents no credential setup. The last push came after the late-May change, and the README does not mention it. Search is the real gap. It can list what is hot in a subreddit, but it cannot answer “who is complaining about invoicing”.
Three more show up in the search results and in Google’s AI Overview. All three are small or dated, so they sit at the bottom.
A Python server with about 302 stars, built on PRAW. It has ten read tools and three write tools (create post, reply to post, reply to comment), plus “strategic” analysis text around the results. It needs a client ID and secret, and optionally a username and password. Last push was December 21, 2025. Its setup tells you to create an app on Reddit’s app page, which is the step Reddit closed to new users. Existing app holders are fine. New users are stuck, and our PRAW alternative page covers the way around it.
A Python read-only server on FastMCP with five tools: search a subreddit, search all of Reddit, post details, subreddit info and hot posts. It needs a client ID, a secret and a user agent. It has about 4 stars, no license file, and its last push was September 1, 2025. Fine as a reference implementation, thin as a daily tool.
A Go server with about 4 stars, created in February 2026 and last pushed June 30, 2026. Its pitch is trends: discover communities, find crossover subreddits, rank posts by a velocity score, and compare momentum over time. It says no key and no OAuth, using Reddit’s public JSON endpoints, and its README claims about 60 requests a minute without authentication. The public JSON endpoints are the ones that returned 403 in our logged-out test, so expect it to fail the same way.
Two more names appear in directories. A server by enisze describes OAuth2 and read-only search, with 1 star and a last push in July 2025. A small RSS-only server was posted in r/ClaudeAI in June 2026 by its author, who lists the limits himself: flat comments, no scores and about 25 results per call. Both are covered by the same dates in the timeline above.
Pick by what you need to do and what you already have. This checklist is the whole decision.
| If you... | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want Reddit research in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor today, with no API key | BigIdeasDB | The only one we found working after the update, no Reddit app needed |
| Already have an approved Reddit app and want free and local | reddit-mcp-buddy | Cleanest docs and a one-click Claude Desktop install |
| Need to post, reply, edit or delete | reddit-mcp-server (jordanburke) | The only maintained full write toolset, with safe mode |
| Only need a quick subreddit read, and accept it may break | mcp-server-reddit or mcp-reddit | No setup, but no search and exposed to the logged-out block |
| Need a server that runs on a headless server with no browser | An approved-API server, or a data license | BigIdeasDB needs Chrome running, so it is not for cron jobs |
| Need bulk dataset-scale Reddit data | Reddit approval or a data license | No MCP server is built for it, and ours is paced for research |
Before you install any Reddit MCP server, run four checks. Read its README for the words “credentials” and “anonymous”. Check the last commit date, and treat anything before late May 2026 as untested against the block. Check whether it mentions October 31 or November 13. And ask whether you can still get the credentials it wants. Our Reddit scraper ranking uses the same checks for scripts and libraries, and best MCP servers for founders covers the rest of a founder’s stack.
No. In our October 24, 2026 search for “reddit mcp server”, where “official” shows up as a related search, every Reddit MCP server in the results was written by a community developer. None came from Reddit. Reddit’s official route is its Data API, which is what several of these servers wrap, and that route now needs approval and stops taking new requests on October 31, 2026.
“Official” in a repo name usually means “uses the official API”, as in the GeLi2001 description. It does not mean Reddit endorses it. For a longer look at the API route, see the Reddit API alternative for AI.
The same story repeats in r/ClaudeAI. A Reddit MCP server that worked in the spring started returning nothing. One post on May 31, 2026 named the cause:
“Reddit now blocks anonymous access to its JSON API at the network level.” – r/ClaudeAI
The same post explained why the usual fix is gone:
“self-service API key creation ended in late 2025, so you can't just make a new app to get OAuth creds without going through a manual approval queue.” – r/ClaudeAI
In the comments, a reader described losing a day to it before finding the cause:
“Spent part of today trying to get Claude to read Reddit threads and kept hitting walls” – r/ClaudeAI
Another commenter in the same thread described the route that still works, and its cost:
“Authenticated access still works (Reddit only killed the anonymous kind)” – r/ClaudeAI
That is the whole basis of a session-based tool such as the BigIdeasDB Reddit Connector, with the same tradeoff the commenter named: it needs Reddit open in a real browser. More on the 403 itself is in why a Reddit .json URL returns 403, and the broader picture is in how to scrape Reddit in 2026.
If you want the AI client side of this, the guide to connecting ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to Reddit covers what each assistant can read on its own, and Reddit data for Claude, Cursor and other AI clients covers the data side. Prefer Python? See the Reddit scraper in Python, and for threads in bulk see the Reddit comment scraper.

This is our ranking, and BigIdeasDB is our product. We rank it first because it was the only one we found returning data after the update, and we show the test. We did not run the open-source servers, so a server rated “likely affected” may still work for you, especially from an IP or account Reddit treats well. This page does not claim Reddit will keep any date above, or that any route is approved by Reddit for your use. It is not legal advice.
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads through your own logged-in Chrome. No Reddit API keys, no approval wait, paced at a human speed. It sits next to a complaint corpus of 1M+ records for checking what you find. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20.
See BigIdeasDB plans →Set it up in 5 minutes →BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit MCP server in 2026 because it is the only one we found still working after Reddit's update, using a proprietary session-based method. It is hosted, needs no Reddit API key and works in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through the Reddit Connector in the BigIdeasDB Clipper. The open-source servers need an approved Reddit app or depend on anonymous access that Reddit now blocks.
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit MCP server for Claude. It adds to Claude Code with one command or to Claude Desktop with a JSON entry, needs no Reddit API key, and returns posts and comment threads through your own Reddit login in Chrome. The popular open-source options for Claude, such as reddit-mcp-buddy, only browse without credentials, and credentials are now hard to get.
Yes, but not one that lasts. The open-source servers are free software, but they need a Reddit app you can no longer newly request after October 31, 2026, or they read RSS feeds that Reddit ends on November 13, 2026. BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit MCP server that works today, and it is included with Pro at $49 a month or $349 lifetime. Use code SAVE20.
No. In our October 24, 2026 search for Reddit MCP servers, every server in the results was written by a community developer, and none was published by Reddit. Reddit's official route is its Data API, which now needs approval, and new access requests stop on October 31, 2026. Treat any server that calls itself official as a wrapper around that API.
It depends on the server. reddit-mcp-server by jordanburke, the Arindam200 server and the GeLi2001 server all need a client ID and secret. reddit-mcp-buddy browses without one but needs keys for search and comments. BigIdeasDB needs no Reddit API key at all, because its Reddit tools run through the Reddit Connector in your own Chrome.
Reddit stopped serving logged-out requests to its .json endpoints in late May 2026, so servers built on anonymous access now get a 403 block page. On October 24, 2026 three of three logged-out JSON requests we sent returned 403. It is not your config. Use a server with approved credentials, or one that fetches through a logged-in session, such as BigIdeasDB.
reddit-mcp-buddy is an open-source TypeScript Reddit MCP server with about 865 GitHub stars, last pushed on August 17, 2026. Without credentials it only browses subreddits, served from RSS with no scores or comment counts. Search, comments and user analysis need Reddit credentials. It partly works today, and its RSS mode ends when Reddit ends RSS on November 13, 2026.
Two of the eight we compared can write: reddit-mcp-server by jordanburke (create, reply, edit, delete and save, with a safe mode on by default) and the Arindam200 server (create post and reply). Both need Reddit credentials with a username and password. BigIdeasDB is read-only by design, built for research, so it never posts under your account.
