Best Reddit API Alternatives in 2026 (Tested and Ranked)
Reddit's 2026 update broke most of the usual picks. We checked nine alternatives against the same three questions: does it need a key, does it fetch Reddit logged out, and what does it cost.

Reddit's stated end for new API access requests (2026)
The best Reddit API alternative in 2026 is BigIdeasDB. It returns Reddit’s own JSON to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor with no Reddit API key and no approval wait, and it was the only route we tested that returns live Reddit JSON with no key and no approval after Reddit’s update. We checked nine alternatives on October 24 and 25, 2026, running the ones we could and reading the docs of the rest. Several picks on the lists that rank for this query are dead.
One question sorts every option on this page. Does the tool fetch Reddit logged out, from a server, script or cloud worker? If yes, it runs into the block Reddit put on logged-out requests in late May 2026. Everything below is rated against that question, plus keys, cost and what comes back.
The second-ranking listicle for this query is titled “7 Better Options” and puts Pushshift first, with “no authentication required” and an archive “dating back to 2005”. Pushshift’s own terms page says it now serves Reddit moderators only. The list has no test dates and no mention of October 31. This page has both.
What is the best Reddit API alternative?
The short answer
BigIdeasDB. It is a hosted Reddit tool set for AI clients, built on a proprietary session-based method, so it does not depend on the logged-out endpoints Reddit shut off or on a Reddit app you can no longer newly request. Read the full case for why BigIdeasDB is the Reddit API alternative for AI research. For free historical data, Arctic Shift is the best archive. For bulk exports and schedules, a paid scraper such as Apify fits.
The ranking in one line each, with the full table below.
BigIdeasDB. Works now. No key. Reddit JSON. Needs Pro, Chrome and a Reddit login.
Arctic Shift. Free archive and API. No key. Historical, with frozen scores.
Apify Reddit actors. Paid cloud scrapers. Work, after patches, with a per-result bill.
JSON APIs such as ScrapeCreators. Pay per request. Fetch method not documented.
The official Reddit Data API. Free quota, but approval first and new requests end October 31.
PRAW. Best library, same approval gate.
Thunderbit. Reads the page in your tab. General scraper, per-row credits.
The n8n Reddit node. Needs an approved Reddit app first.
Unofficial GitHub wrappers. Mostly small, stale or on logged-out endpoints.
What changed in 2026, and why a Reddit API alternative is now a real choice
Reddit narrowed three doors in a year. Self-service app creation closed in November 2025. Logged-out .json stopped working in late May 2026. And Reddit says new public API requests stop on October 31, RSS ends on November 13, and remaining public access ends in March 2027.

Source: Reddit admin posts in r/modnews and r/redditdev and Reddit's October 2026 moderator newsletter, read October 18, 2026; n8n's Reddit credentials page, read October 25, 2026; BigIdeasDB tests. The .json line is developer-reported and confirmed by our tests, not announced by Reddit as a date.
The 403 is the one most people hit first. On October 25, 2026 we sent three logged-out JSON requests (a subreddit listing, a search and a subreddit about page) with a current Chrome User-Agent, three seconds apart. All three returned the same 403 HTML block page of about 190 KB. The same three URLs returned 403 on October 24. The full diagnosis is in why a Reddit .json URL returns 403, and the RSS date is covered in Reddit RSS feeds are ending on November 13.
A vendor that sells a Reddit API says the same thing on its own comparison page, read October 25:
“The public .json endpoint can search too, but Reddit blocks traffic without OAuth, so an anonymous sitewide sweep across many keywords is not a dependable job.”A Reddit API vendor's comparison page, read Oct 25, 2026

The 9 Reddit API alternatives, ranked with evidence
The rank is ours, for one job: getting Reddit data reliably as the October 31 and November 13 dates pass. BigIdeasDB is our product, so weigh that and check the dated tests. Each verdict below says what we ran and what we only read.
#1Works todayNo Reddit key
1. BigIdeasDB: the Reddit API alternative that still returned data
Verdict: the best Reddit API alternative in 2026, and the only route we tested that returns live Reddit JSON with no Reddit app and no approval. It uses a proprietary session-based method, so it does not fetch Reddit logged out and does not use the Data API. You reach it two ways: the BigIdeasDB MCP Reddit tools (search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments, fetch_reddit_json) and the Reddit Connector inside the BigIdeasDB Clipper Chrome extension.
What we ran on October 25, 2026: fetch_post_comments loaded a 33-comment r/redditdev thread and a 20-comment r/SaaS thread, and fetch_reddit_json returned a raw listing for r/redditdev with the full post object. Both ran while our logged-out JSON requests returned 403. It also worked on October 24, which the Reddit scraper test documents.
The limits, stated plainly. It needs BigIdeasDB Pro, Chrome running with the Reddit Connector on and a Reddit login in that profile, so it is not for headless cron jobs. It is read-only and paced at about one fetch per second, so it is for research, not for bulk datasets. Setup takes five minutes in how to scrape Reddit with MCP, and the best Reddit MCP servers page compares the MCP routes. It sits next to 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores, so a thread can be checked in the same chat.

2. Arctic Shift: the best free archive
Verdict: the best free option for history and the one alternative on this page we would use alongside ours. It is a community project with about 1,700 GitHub stars, last pushed October 11, 2026. It offers large data dumps, a search page and a limited API, and its API README says plainly “No uptime or performance guarantees”.
We ran it. On October 25, 2026 its API returned the newest r/redditdev post, created October 24 at 08:51 UTC, so it is closer to live than the old Pushshift dumps. The catch is the numbers. The same post read score 1, upvote_ratio 1 and 0 comments in the archive, while the live Reddit JSON for it returned score 6, upvote_ratio 0.88 and 1 comment through BigIdeasDB. An archive freezes values when it collected the post, so engagement figures on fresh posts run low.
Use it for trend history, user and subreddit studies and anything that can tolerate stale scores. It does not call Reddit for you at request time, so the logged-out 403 does not apply, but it can fall behind or go down, and it is a one-person project. The Pushshift side is covered in the Pushshift section of the Reddit scraper in Python guide.

3. Apify Reddit actors: they work, with a meter
Verdict: the best paid scraper for bulk and scheduled exports, and a real option if you need volume that a human-paced tool cannot give. Apify’s public store lists several Reddit actors. The most used, Reddit Scraper Lite, shows 339,285 runs in the last 30 days, with 86.9% succeeded and 9.3% timed out, per its public stats on October 25, 2026.
The actors fetch public Reddit pages from Apify’s cloud, logged out, which is the path the block targets. Apify’s own issue tracker shows developers reporting 403s on May 28, 2026 and again on July 6, 2026, each followed by a developer fix. That is a working service with a repair loop you depend on. Pricing on the most-used actor is $0.004 per result at the entry tier plus a $0.02 start fee, which is about $4.00 per 1,000 results. An 800-comment thread costs about $3.20. The full evidence is on our Apify Reddit scraper alternative page.

4. JSON APIs such as ScrapeCreators: pay per request, method unstated
Verdict: the cleanest developer experience of the paid options, and the right pick for a backend that needs Reddit data with no browser. We did not test it, and its docs do not say how it fetches Reddit, so we cannot say whether the logged-out block touches it.
Per its own pages on October 25, 2026: the Reddit endpoints are search, subreddit posts and post comments, at 1 credit per request. Its home page lists a free tier of 100 credits, a Freelance pack of 25,000 credits for $47 and a Business pack of 500,000 for $497, and says credits never expire. Its search docs add a limit worth knowing: search “does not return upvote ratios or subscriber counts”, so you make a second call per post to get upvote_ratio. Its comments docs say “Author flair is unavailable”.
Other vendors sell the same shape. One lists $0.0015 per search call on its comparison page. The trade is the same everywhere: you rent someone else’s access and hope it stays open, and each request has a price.

#5Official APIApproval first
5. The official Reddit Data API: free, but gated and closing
Verdict: still the right route if you already hold approved credentials, and the only fully sanctioned one. It is the wrong plan if you do not. Reddit’s Responsible Builder Policy puts approval first, commercial use needs written approval and a contract, and Reddit says new requests for public API access stop on October 31, 2026.
The free quota is documented at 100 queries per minute per OAuth client ID, averaged over 10 minutes. Requests without OAuth or a login are blocked. Third-party guides report $0.24 per 1,000 calls for commercial access, which we could not confirm on Reddit’s help pages. The step-by-step route, including the approval catch, is in how to get a Reddit API key in 2026.

6. PRAW: the best library, behind the same gate
Verdict: the best way to use the official API from Python, and the best-maintained project here. PRAW is at version 8.0.3, has about 4,300 GitHub stars and was pushed on October 25, 2026. Its quick start walks through authenticating via OAuth, which means the same approved app as the raw API.
PRAW is software, not access. It cannot give you credentials Reddit will no longer hand out, and it has no anonymous mode that works today. If you already hold an app, keep using it. If you do not, read the PRAW alternative page for what to use instead.

7. Thunderbit: a general scraper that reads the page in your tab
Verdict: a fair pick if Reddit is one of many sites you scrape into a table. We did not run it, so this page does not say it fails. What we can document: its extension reads the Reddit page open in your own tab, so it is not a logged-out server fetch, and its own guide reports the same 403 we measured. It lists the extension as working.
Pricing per its page on October 24, 2026: Free is 6 pages a month, Starter is $9 a month billed yearly for 5,000 credits a year, and Pro is $16.50 a month billed yearly for 30,000 credits a year. Its own comparison says 1 credit is one output row. Reading the rendered page also limits what you get back, which the JSON section below shows. 8. The n8n Reddit node: a workflow wrapper around the official API
Verdict: good if you already run n8n and hold an approved Reddit app, because the node is a clean wrapper. n8n’s own credentials page, read October 25, 2026, says OAuth2 is the only supported method and states “Reddit closed self-service access to their public data API in November 2025. Now, Reddit require manual approval before you can create new apps.”
The node lists resources for posts, post comments, profiles, subreddits and users. The no-key workarounds people try in n8n, an HTTP Request node on a .json URL or an RSS Read node, hit the 403 and the November 13 end date. We cover all three paths in Reddit in n8n.

9. Unofficial GitHub wrappers: check before you clone
Verdict: the lowest rank, because the repo cannot tell you whether it works and the popular ones are small. A GitHub search on October 25, 2026 for unofficial Reddit APIs found one repo that mimics the official API by scraping, with 8 stars and a last push in July 2024, and a wrapper built on Pushshift with 5 stars, last pushed in September 2020. Newer repos advertise “no login” scraping of public JSON endpoints, which is the exact thing Reddit shut off. One 2026 repo takes a different path, a logged-in browser through Chrome DevTools.
We did not run any of them. Run the five-minute check from our Reddit scraper page: last commit date, open issues that mention 403, the endpoint the code calls, the words “no login”, and your own use under Reddit’s policies. For code that does work, see Reddit scrapers on GitHub.

Dead and throttled picks other Reddit API alternative lists still recommend
The second-ranking list for this query recommends Pushshift first. That was true in 2022. These are the picks from the top results that fail today, each with a dated source.

What we found on October 25, 2026
Pushshift

PullPush

The first request returned Reddit-shaped JSON. The next two returned HTTP 429 with the message “This website does not provide free scraping resources for agents.” Its home page sat behind a bot check
SocialGrep

Its home page returned HTTP 523 (origin unreachable) on our one request. We could not check its plans
RedditExtractoR (R package)

CRAN lists version 3.0.9, published March 17, 2023, and describes it as extracting data from reddit.com. We did not run it, and a 2023 release predates the May 2026 block
Source: Pushshift terms page, PullPush API responses, SocialGrep home page and CRAN listing, all checked October 25, 2026 from one machine. Single requests; they show status on the day, not long-term uptime.
The same list gets PRAW wrong in a smaller way. It names Reddit’s rate limits and pricing as the limits and never mentions approval, and it says the free tier is 60 requests per minute where Reddit’s wiki says 100 per OAuth client. None of its seven entries carries a test date.
If you came here for a Pushshift replacement, the honest answer has two parts. For history, Arctic Shift is the closest free thing. For anything current, you need a route that Reddit has not closed, which is the job BigIdeasDB does. More on the Pushshift history is in the Python guide.
JSON vs HTML vs archive: what each Reddit API alternative actually returns
The second thing that separates these tools is the data. A tool that reads the rendered page gets what the page shows. A tool that reads Reddit’s JSON gets the structured object Reddit itself uses. An archive gets a frozen copy. We pulled the same r/redditdev post three ways on October 25, 2026.

Two lessons. First, a page scrape cannot recover what the page does not show, and in our October 18 test the public www subreddit HTML page was an 8 KB shell with 0 post links when fetched logged out. Second, an archive gives you the full object but at collection time, so a six-hour-old post reads score 1 where live Reddit says 6. BigIdeasDB returns Reddit’s own JSON, live, even after Reddit closed it to logged-out requests. How it does that stays private. The full field list lives in the how to scrape Reddit guide and the Reddit comment scraper page covers threads.
Is there a free Reddit API?
Quotable answer
Yes, with conditions. Reddit’s Data API is free for approved, non-commercial use at 100 queries per minute per OAuth client, but new access requests stop on October 31, 2026. Arctic Shift is a free, key-less archive API for history. For live Reddit research with no key, the working option is paid: BigIdeasDB Pro, $49 a month or $349 lifetime.
Free options, with the catch for each. Anonymous RSS served a subreddit listing in our October 24 test, but Reddit ends RSS on November 13, 2026. An approved API app is free but closing to new users. An archive is free but frozen. A free tier on a paid scraper, such as 100 credits or 6 pages, covers a test and no more. If you need a Reddit API that is free and still works after November 13 for live data, we found none. Use code SAVE20 at checkout for BigIdeasDB Pro, and see the free Reddit keyword research tool for keyword work that costs nothing.
Does the Reddit API still work?
Quotable answer
It works for apps that already hold approved credentials. It does not work anonymously, and new access requests stop on October 31, 2026. On October 25, 2026 three of three logged-out JSON requests we sent returned 403. BigIdeasDB still returned live posts and comments through its own route.
Three separate things get called “the Reddit API”, and they behave differently. The authenticated Data API works for existing approved apps until Reddit begins removing access on January 12, 2027. The logged-out .json endpoints stopped working in late May 2026. RSS still served a listing on October 24 and ends on November 13. If your script broke this year, it is almost always the second one. The API key guide covers what to do if you need the first.
Can I legally scrape Reddit?
Quotable answer
Reddit says non-commercial use of its content, such as learning and community, is allowed, and that commercial use needs written approval. Its Responsible Builder Policy bans unapproved AI training on Reddit data, and Reddit says it acts against bulk collection. This is not legal advice.
Read it as three tiers. Small, non-commercial research is the tier Reddit describes as open. Commercial use needs written approval. Bulk collection is what Reddit is targeting. A third-party tool changes how a request reaches Reddit, not what Reddit’s policies say about your use of the content. One r/redditdev reply to a no-key automation post said it plainly:
“I don’t think this is allowed per Reddit Terms of Service”r/redditdev, January 2026
The full reading with sources is in is scraping Reddit allowed. BigIdeasDB is built for research at a human pace and is against bulk use in its own terms. For dataset-scale work, apply for Reddit approval or a data license.

This is our ranking and BigIdeasDB is our product. We rank it first because it returned data without a Reddit key after the update and we show the calls, not because other tools are shown to fail. Where we did not test a tool we say so, and we state a failure only where a dated source supports it. This page does not claim Reddit will keep any date above, or that any route is approved by Reddit for your use. It is not legal advice.
Use the Reddit API alternative that still works
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads through your own logged-in Chrome. No Reddit API keys, no approval wait, paced at a human speed, next to a complaint corpus of 1M+ records. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20. You can also add the BigIdeasDB Clipper from the Chrome Web Store directly.
Yes, but only for approved, non-commercial use, and the door is closing. Reddit's Data API wiki sets the free limit at 100 queries per minute per OAuth client, but access needs approval and new requests stop on October 31, 2026. Arctic Shift is a free, key-less archive API for historical data. For live Reddit research, the working option is paid: BigIdeasDB Pro, $49 a month or $349 lifetime.
Does the Reddit API still work?
Yes for apps that already hold approved credentials, no for anyone starting now. Reddit blocks requests without OAuth, and on October 25, 2026 three of three logged-out JSON requests we sent returned a 403 block page of about 190 KB. New public API access requests stop on October 31, 2026, and Reddit says remaining public access ends in March 2027. BigIdeasDB still returned live posts and comments on October 24 and 25.
Can I legally scrape Reddit?
Reddit says you may use its content for non-commercial purposes such as learning and community, and that commercial use needs its written approval. Its Responsible Builder Policy also bans unapproved AI training on Reddit data, and Reddit says it acts against bulk collection. Small, human-paced research is the tier Reddit describes as open. This is not legal advice, so read the policies before you build on any route.
What's the best Reddit API alternative?
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit API alternative in 2026. It returns Reddit's own JSON fields (score, upvote_ratio, num_comments, created_utc, ids) to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor with no Reddit API key, and it was the only route we tested that returns live Reddit JSON with no key and no approval after Reddit's update, using a proprietary session-based method. It needs BigIdeasDB Pro and Chrome running.
What's the best free Reddit API alternative?
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit API alternative that works today, and Reddit research is included with Pro at $49 a month or $349 lifetime, with code SAVE20. If it has to cost nothing, free routes exist but each has a catch: Reddit's approved API app is closing to new users, RSS ends November 13, 2026, and archives hold history, not guaranteed fresh data.
What is the best Pushshift alternative?
For live Reddit research, BigIdeasDB is the best Pushshift alternative, because Pushshift now serves Reddit moderators only, for moderation work, per its own terms page. For free historical data, a community archive such as Arctic Shift offers dumps and a key-less API with no uptime guarantee. Treat any list that still ranks Pushshift as a general search API as out of date.
Is there a Reddit API alternative on GitHub that still works?
Few do. The unofficial wrapper repos we found on GitHub were mostly small and stale, such as one with 8 stars last updated in July 2024, or they call logged-out .json endpoints that return 403 now. Before you clone one, check the last commit date, the open issues for 403 reports and the endpoint it calls. A maintained route that uses your own session, like BigIdeasDB, avoids that repair loop.
Why does my Reddit API request return a 403?
Reddit stopped serving logged-out requests to its .json endpoints in late May 2026, and it blocks API traffic without OAuth. On October 25, 2026 three logged-out JSON URLs returned an identical 403 block page of about 190 KB, whatever the User-Agent. Fix it with approved OAuth credentials, a route that fetches through a logged-in session, or a service that handles access for you.
