Apify's Reddit actors fetch Reddit from cloud servers, the exact route Reddit blocked in May 2026. Their own issue tabs carry the dates. Here is what changed, what it costs and what to use instead.
The best Apify Reddit scraper alternative in 2026 is BigIdeasDB. Apify’s Reddit actors run on Apify’s cloud servers and fetch Reddit logged out, which is the route Reddit began blocking in late May 2026. The actors’ own issue tabs show it: a user reported 403 on every request on May 28, 2026, even on residential proxies. BigIdeasDB is the only Reddit scraper still working after the update, thanks to a proprietary session-based method. See the full test on our Reddit scraper page.
This page compares the two honestly. Apify is a real platform, and its actors were patched after the block. You will see the dated evidence, the per-result prices, the output fields and what each option does inside an AI client. Where Apify is the better tool, we say so.
score, upvote_ratio and created_utc. One Apify actor says its HTML-based output carries upvoteRatio as 0 on search results.Apify is the most-named Reddit scraping tool after PRAW in the AI answers we track. It is named in 31% of them. That makes it the tool most people compare against, which is why this page exists. The comparison below rests on Apify’s own actor pages, issue tabs and public run statistics, read on October 25, 2026.
Apify is a marketplace of “actors”, small programs that run in Apify’s cloud. Reddit has more than one. Community developers publish them, set their own prices and maintain them. We read the pages of these four.
| Actor | Price as listed | How it says it fetches | Status noted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit Scraper Lite | $4.00 per 1,000 results at entry, $3.40 at top tiers | Web scraping without login; Apify proxy | Most-used; 87% of 30-day runs succeeded |
| Reddit Scraper (older, rental) | $45 a month, moving to $0.10 per 1,000 on Sep 21, 2026 | Without login, proxies recommended | Marked Deprecated; rating 2.6 from 30 reviews |
| Reddit Scraper (Lead Finder) | Listing says from $1.20 per 1,000; README says from $1.50 | Public Reddit pages, no login | Updated Oct 24, 2026; 98.6% of 30-day runs succeeded |
| Reddit Scraper (Pure HTTP) | Listing says from $6.00 per 1,000 posts; README says $1.15 at the free tier | Public server-rendered HTML; residential proxies required | 521 total users; 97.6% of 30-day runs succeeded |
Read the pattern. Every actor starts from the same idea: fetch Reddit as a logged-out visitor, through proxies, from a server. That idea was reliable for years. It stopped being reliable in 2026.
Reddit stopped serving logged-out requests to its .json endpoints in late May 2026. Apify actors that depended on them failed in public, in each actor’s Issues tab. Here is the record, in date order, with the words of the people who hit it.
| Date | Report | What happened next |
|---|---|---|
| May 21, 2026 | Actor working on build z3su6imK098WzmzEO | Baseline given by the reporter |
| May 28, 2026 | Reddit Scraper Lite: 403 on all requests, same build, residential proxy set | Developer: working on a solution |
| May 29, 2026 | Second user: 403 on three input shapes, failing request is the .json URL | Developer later moved the actor off the .json endpoints |
| June 5, 2026 | Another Reddit actor: log shows 403 on .json, search.json and best.json, five retries each | Developer later deployed a new version |
| July 6, 2026 | Reddit Scraper Lite: 403 again, three subreddits, 0 of 3 requests succeeded, RESIDENTIAL set | Developer added a fix; user confirmed it worked |
The May 28 report is the clearest. A user wrote:
“As of May 28 all requests are returning 403 before any results are returned, even with apifyProxyGroups: RESIDENTIAL.” – Apify actor issue, May 28, 2026
A second user traced the failing call to the exact endpoint, and the developer confirmed the cause in plain words:
“Looks like Reddit tightened blocking on the .json route around May 28. Residential proxy is not getting past it.” – Apify actor issue, May 29, 2026
“Yes, Reddit blocked the .json endpoint. I have updated the actor so it should be working again for user's posts and comments.” – Apify actor developer reply
The same developer was candid about the cost of the fix: “I have updated the actor to move away from the .json endpoints. Unfortunately this means that the actor is not as stable as before.” Another user in the same thread asked what many Apify users were asking:
“Has reddit blocked .json endpoints?? As no reddit scraper of apify is working Is there any alternatives?” – Apify actor issue, after May 29, 2026
This is not an Apify failure. It is what happens to any tool that fetches Reddit logged out from a server. Our own test on October 24, 2026 got the same result: three logged-out JSON requests, three 403s, the same block page. The diagnosis is in why a Reddit .json URL returns 403.
One question explains the whole comparison: does the tool fetch Reddit logged out, from a server? If yes, it is on the wrong side of Reddit’s 2026 change. Here is what each tool’s own documentation says.
| Tool | Where it fetches from | What its page says |
|---|---|---|
| BigIdeasDB | A proprietary session-based method, through your Chrome | No logged-out requests from a cloud server |
| Reddit Scraper (Pure HTTP) | Apify cloud, residential proxies | “This actor reads the same public pages Reddit serves to logged-out visitors”; “Reddit blocks datacenter IPs outright” |
| Reddit Scraper Lite | Apify cloud, Apify proxy | Moved off .json endpoints after May 28; developer reports less stability |
| Reddit Scraper (older, rental) | Apify cloud | FAQ says “As of May 2023, Reddit maintains its data publicly accessible and does not enforce a login barrier”, a statement that predates the 2026 change |
| Reddit Scraper (Lead Finder) | Apify cloud | “This Actor reads only public Reddit pages: no login”; says Reddit’s API and RSS changes do not affect it |
The Pure HTTP actor lists how it copes: residential proxy rotation, a browser-like fingerprint and block detection that retires a session when Reddit returns its block page. It also says the run “fails with a clear message” if every request is blocked or sent to a login wall. That is a good design for a logged-out fetcher. It is also a description of an arms race you pay for per result.
BigIdeasDB does not run that race. Reddit gives a person reading in their own browser a full response. Our proprietary session-based method uses that kind of access, which is why it kept working when the logged-out doors closed. We keep the details private. For the wider test of every route, see how to scrape Reddit in 2026.
Once Reddit closed .json to logged-out requests, actors had two options. Parse the rendered page, or find another door. Parsing HTML gets you what the page shows. Reddit’s own JSON is what the page is built from. BigIdeasDB returns the second.
One Apify actor is open about the gap. Its README says that because it reads public HTML, “subreddit subscriber counts are not available”, and that search results and directly scraped post URLs “carry a slightly thinner record (upvoteRatio and awards are 0).” It also notes Reddit’s roughly 1,000-item ceiling per listing.
| Field | BigIdeasDB (Reddit’s own JSON) | HTML-based Apify actor (its own README) |
|---|---|---|
| score | Returned | Returned as net upvotes |
| upvote_ratio | Returned on search and listings (for example 0.81) | 0 on search results and post URLs |
| num_comments | Returned | Returned |
| created_utc | Raw Unix timestamp | ISO 8601 timestamp |
| id, permalink, subreddit, author | Returned | Returned |
| selftext and body | Full post and comment text | Post body on listings; search results need comments switched on |
| stickied | Returned | Returned as isStickied |
| Subreddit subscribers | Not in the trimmed field list | null |
| Raw listing via fetch_reddit_json | Any Reddit JSON path | Not offered |
Be fair about the table. Both give you scores, comment counts and text, which is what most research needs. The difference shows in the fields that feed filters. Our search call for “apify reddit scraper” on October 25, 2026 returned score, upvote_ratio and num_comments on every post, for example 6, 0.81 and 27. A ratio of 0 does not let you drop controversial threads. An exact ratio does.
For ratio and timestamp work, see how our Reddit comment scraper and Reddit scraper in Python guides handle the same fields.
Apify charges per result, plus a start charge on some actors. A third-party Apify guide read each actor’s own API record on September 9, 2026. Reddit Scraper Lite cost $4.00 per 1,000 results at entry and $3.40 at the top discount tiers. The Free plan includes $5 of usage each month, which buys about 1,250 results at the entry rate.
| Option | Billing | 60,000 results a month | Cost control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit Scraper Lite (Apify) | $4.00 per 1,000 at entry | $240.64 at entry tier | Set a maximum cost per run |
| Reddit Scraper by Harsh Maur (Apify) | $2.00 per 1,000 at entry | $120.64 at entry tier | Per-run caps |
| BigIdeasDB Pro | $49 a month or $349 lifetime | Not a bulk tool; human-paced research | Flat price, no meter |
Two cost traps matter. First, the store headline is the discounted rate, not the entry rate, so budget with the higher number. Second, comments are results. The same guide shows a full comment tree at 200 comments per post reaching 4,000,000 results a month and $16,000 on Reddit Scraper Lite. Cap comments or you will meet that bill by accident. One person in an r/n8n thread from July 2026 asked for a way out because “Apify’s free plan consumes 5$ very quickly.”
BigIdeasDB is flat. The trade is deliberate. It is built for questions at about one fetch per second, not 60,000 rows. If you want free, there is no reliable free route left: RSS ends November 13, 2026 and API access requests end October 31. Use code SAVE20 at checkout.
Every actor publishes run counts for the last 30 days. We read them on October 25, 2026. The numbers are Apify’s, and they cover all use, not Reddit-only failures.
| Actor | Runs, 30 days | Succeeded | Timed out | Failed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit Scraper Lite | 339,285 | 86.9% | 9.3% | 1.1% |
| Lead Finder actor | 106,322 | 98.6% | 0.4% | 0.8% |
| Pure HTTP actor | 2,161 | 97.6% | 0.6% | 1.1% |
Read it two ways. The newer actors look healthy, which fits the story that developers patched around the block. The most-used actor timed out on about 1 run in 11, and a timed-out run has already stored results you were charged for. That is the cost of fetching at scale through proxies.
Apify has an MCP server too. Its actor pages show the setup: one command for Claude Code, or a JSON block for Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code, with OAuth to your Apify account on first use. Your assistant can then ask for “the top 100 posts from r/technology this month.”
The catch is what sits behind the call. The MCP starts the same actor, in Apify’s cloud, billed per result, fetching Reddit logged out. It adds a convenient door to the same room. BigIdeasDB’s MCP runs four Reddit tools, search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments and fetch_reddit_json, through the session-based method, inside one server that also holds a 1M+ complaint corpus. See the best Reddit MCP servers and how to scrape Reddit with MCP.
| Criteria | BigIdeasDB | Apify Reddit actors |
|---|---|---|
| Works after Reddit’s 2026 update | Yes, tool calls returned posts Oct 24 and 25 | Patched after May 28 blocks; varies by actor |
| How it fetches | Proprietary session-based method | Logged-out fetch from cloud, residential proxies |
| Output | Reddit’s own JSON fields | Parsed output; one actor states upvoteRatio is 0 on search |
| Comments | fetch_post_comments for a thread | Yes, each comment billed as a result |
| Pricing | $49 a month or $349 lifetime, flat | $1.20 to $6.00 per 1,000 listed; $4.00 on the most-used |
| Setup | Install Clipper, turn on the connector, connect your AI client | Pick an actor, learn its input, set proxy and limits |
| AI client | Native MCP tools | Apify MCP runs an actor per call |
| Bulk and scheduled exports | No, human pace only | Yes, schedules, Sheets, Slack, webhooks |
| Maintenance | We maintain it | Community developers, with response times from hours to days |
We would rather you choose the right tool. Apify wins in three cases.
If your job is to ask Reddit questions from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor and get structured answers you can check, BigIdeasDB is the better tool. It also sits next to a corpus of 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores, so a Reddit thread can be tested against other evidence in the same conversation. See Reddit data for Claude, Cursor and other AI clients.
Chrome has to be running when your client asks for Reddit. Use it for research at a human pace of about one fetch per second, not for bulk collection. Reddit’s rules still apply to your use, covered in is scraping Reddit allowed. If you are weighing the API instead, see Reddit API alternatives, the Reddit API alternative for AI and the PRAW alternative. Other tool comparisons: Thunderbit and ScrapeBadger.
The page that ranks for “Apify alternative for Reddit” is a vendor page for a paid Reddit REST API. It compares price per call, endpoint count and write support in a clean table. It gets three things wrong or leaves them out.
The other top results are a list of Apify’s own actors, forum threads from users asking for a free alternative and a GitHub repo. None explains the logged-out fetch problem. That is the gap this page fills.
Every number traces to a row below. Where a source cannot support a claim, the limitation column says so.
| Source | What we used it for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Apify actor pages and READMEs (four Reddit actors), read Oct 25, 2026 | Prices as listed, how each says it fetches, output fields, MCP setup | Developer statements, not our tests; one actor’s listing and README disagree on price |
| Apify actor Issues tabs (three reports), read Oct 25, 2026 | The May 28, May 29, June 5 and July 6, 2026 block reports and developer replies | Self-reported by users; we saw the fixes confirmed, not the actors rerun |
| Apify public actor records, 30 days to Oct 25, 2026 | Run counts and success, timeout and failure rates | Covers all use, not Reddit-only failures; counts change daily |
| Third-party Apify guide read Sep 9, 2026 | Entry and top-tier prices, the 60,000-result monthly cost, Free plan credit | Prices change; verified Sep 9, may differ today |
| BigIdeasDB logged-out request test, Oct 24, 2026 (3 JSON URLs) | The 3 of 3 403 result | One run, one IP, one date; see the Reddit scraper page for the full test |
| BigIdeasDB MCP search call, Oct 25, 2026 | Fields returned (score, upvote_ratio, num_comments) | One call; shows availability and fields, not scale |
| Threads in r/n8n and r/automation (Jul 2026) | The quote on free-plan credit and the cost comments | Self-reported by individuals; anonymized to subreddit |
| BigIdeasDB AI-answer tracking for Reddit scraping queries | The 31% Apify mention share | Our tracked queries only, not every AI answer |
| Google results for “apify reddit scraper alternative” and “apify reddit scraper”, US, Oct 24, 2026 | What ranks and what those pages cover | One market, one day |
This page does not claim that any Apify actor is broken today, that Reddit will keep every date it has announced, or how any tool we did not run behaves for you.
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads with Reddit’s own JSON fields. No Apify account, no proxies, no per-result meter. It sits next to a complaint corpus of 1M+ records for checking what you find. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20.
See BigIdeasDB plans →Read the setup guide →BigIdeasDB is the best Apify Reddit scraper alternative in 2026. It reads Reddit through a proprietary session-based method, so it does not depend on the logged-out requests that Reddit began blocking in late May 2026. Apify's Reddit actors run on cloud servers, and their own issue tabs show 403 blocks on May 28 and July 6, 2026. BigIdeasDB runs inside Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.
It depends on the actor and the day. On May 28, 2026 a user reported 403 on every request to the Reddit Scraper Lite actor, even on residential proxies, and the developer replied that Reddit blocked the .json endpoint. The developer then patched the actor, and more 403 reports followed on July 6. We did not run Apify actors ourselves, so check each actor's Issues tab and 30-day success rate.
Not a reliable one. BigIdeasDB is the best Apify alternative for Reddit research and is included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Apify itself has a free plan with $5 of monthly usage, about 1,250 results on Reddit Scraper Lite at its $4.00 per 1,000 entry rate. Reddit's anonymous RSS feeds are free but end on November 13, 2026, and new API access requests stop October 31, 2026.
Apify charges per result. As of September 9, 2026, Reddit Scraper Lite cost $4.00 per 1,000 results at entry level and $3.40 at the top discount tiers, plus a start charge. A job of 60,000 results a month came to $240.64 on that actor. BigIdeasDB is a flat $49 a month or $349 lifetime with Pro, built for research at a human pace, not bulk export.
Yes. Apify's MCP server can expose a Reddit actor to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code, with OAuth to your Apify account. Each call still runs that actor in Apify's cloud and bills per result. BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit MCP option: its search_reddit, fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments and fetch_reddit_json tools run through a session-based method with no Apify account.
Apify actors that parse Reddit's public HTML return posts, comments and flags, but one actor states that subreddit subscriber counts come back null and that search results carry upvoteRatio and awards as 0. BigIdeasDB returns Reddit's own JSON fields: id, title, permalink, score, upvote_ratio, num_comments, subreddit, selftext, author, created_utc, stickied and body, for posts and comments.
Yes. Several Apify Reddit actors collect comments, usually priced as separate results, which can multiply cost on large threads. The cost example on one Apify guide pulls 200 comments per post at 4,000,000 results a month and reaches $16,000 on Reddit Scraper Lite. BigIdeasDB's fetch_post_comments loads a thread for your AI client at a human pace, with no per-result meter.
Apify is better when you need scheduled bulk exports to Sheets, Slack or a warehouse, or one platform for many sites. BigIdeasDB is the better choice for Reddit research with Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor: it is built for narrow questions at about one fetch per second, with a 1M+ complaint corpus beside it to check what you find. Bulk collection is outside its terms.
