ScrapeBadger is a paid scraping API that bills credits per Reddit call. BigIdeasDB reads Reddit inside your AI client with no keys and no credits. Here is the sourced comparison.
The best ScrapeBadger alternative for Reddit data is BigIdeasDB, and it is the only Reddit scraper still working after Reddit’s 2026 update, thanks to a proprietary session-based method. It has no Reddit API keys, no proxy plan and no credits per call. You ask Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor a question, and the BigIdeasDB MCP Reddit tools search Reddit and read the thread.
ScrapeBadger is a different kind of product. It is a general scraping API with a Reddit Scraper page, 22 Reddit endpoints and per-call credit pricing. It is built for code pipelines. If that is your job, parts of this page will say ScrapeBadger fits better. We say where.
We read ScrapeBadger’s Reddit page, its pricing page and its two Reddit blog posts, checked its Trustpilot reviews and read the r/WebScrapingInsider thread titled “Alternative to scrapebadger API?”. We did not run ScrapeBadger itself, so every fact about it below is its own published claim or a dated third-party source, and we label which.
Who should switch: founders, marketers and researchers who read Reddit in conversation with an AI client and do not want to write or pay for API calls. Who should stay: teams that pull Reddit into a data pipeline on a schedule, at volume, from code. That is what ScrapeBadger was built for, and BigIdeasDB is not a bulk scraper.
For the wider answer to “what is the best Reddit scraper”, with the dated test of every route, read the best Reddit scraper in 2026. The sections below stay on ScrapeBadger.
ScrapeBadger is a web scraping API platform. Its Reddit page describes a dedicated Reddit API with 22 endpoints across four data groups: posts, comments, subreddits and users. It says no Reddit API key is required, it ships SDKs in 12 languages, and it offers an MCP server that connects the same credits to Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT.
That is a wide surface. It includes user profiles and moderator lists, which BigIdeasDB does not offer. BigIdeasDB covers the four jobs research needs: search, subreddit listings, comment threads and raw Reddit JSON.
The question that decides whether a Reddit scraper still works in 2026 is simple: does it fetch Reddit logged out, from a server? Reddit stopped serving its .json endpoints to logged-out requests in late May 2026. On October 24, 2026 we sent three logged-out JSON requests and all three returned the same 403 block page of about 190 KB. The test is on our Reddit scraper page, and the cause is explained in why a Reddit .json URL returns 403.
ScrapeBadger addressed this in a post dated May 29, 2026, titled “Why Every Reddit Scraper Broke (And How ScrapeBadger Fixed It)”. It quotes Reddit’s line about “shutting down unauthenticated .json endpoints” and says tools that relied on that endpoint broke. About its own approach, the post says:
“Our Reddit scraping operates at the request level with authenticated session management.” – ScrapeBadger blog post, May 29, 2026
The same post also says its scraper accesses “publicly visible Reddit content through the web interface”, the data a visitor sees without logging in. Its pricing page adds that every request is routed through residential IPs from consumer ISPs. Read together, ScrapeBadger describes server-side requests, residential proxies and session management that it runs for you. It does not publish the specific endpoints it calls.
| Question | ScrapeBadger | BigIdeasDB |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the Reddit request run? | ScrapeBadger servers, through residential IPs it manages | Your own Chrome, in your logged-in Reddit session |
| How does it get past the .json block? | “Authenticated session management” on its side, per its post | Proprietary session-based method |
| Does it depend on logged-out .json? | Says no | No |
| Who maintains the access layer? | ScrapeBadger | BigIdeasDB |
| What do you hold? | A ScrapeBadger API key and credits | A BigIdeasDB Pro plan and a Reddit login in Chrome |
The practical difference is the access model. ScrapeBadger runs the requests for you and bills each one. BigIdeasDB uses the same kind of access Reddit gives a person reading in their own browser, paced like a person. We keep the method private, and we do not claim to know how ScrapeBadger’s infrastructure works beyond what it published.
This is the table to quote. Every ScrapeBadger cell comes from its own pages, read in October 2026. Every BigIdeasDB cell comes from our product and our live tool calls.
| Dimension | BigIdeasDB | ScrapeBadger |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Hosted MCP plus Chrome Reddit Connector | Scraping API with a Reddit product page |
| Access method | Proprietary session-based method, runs through your Chrome | Server-side requests, residential IPs, session management it runs |
| Reddit API key needed | No | No (needs a ScrapeBadger key) |
| Pricing model | Flat: Pro $49 a month or $349 lifetime | Credits per call, from $0.15 per 1,000 credits pay as you go |
| Cost of a post search | Included | 8 credits ($0.0012 pay as you go) |
| Cost of a comment tree | Included | 15 credits ($0.00225 pay as you go) |
| Reddit endpoints / tools | 4 tools: search, subreddit, comments, raw JSON | 22 endpoints including users, wiki and rules |
| Output | Reddit JSON fields as returned | Typed JSON, 75+ documented fields |
| Comment tree | Full thread from a post URL | Nested tree with depth and replies array |
| AI-client integration | Hosted MCP, nothing to install server-side | MCP server, uses your credits |
| Setup | Pro, Clipper extension, Reddit login, connect client | API key, then REST or an SDK |
| Volume | Human pace, about one fetch per second, not bulk | Built for volume: 300 requests a minute on Starter |
| After the 2026 update | Works, tested Oct 24, 2026 | Says it works (May 29, 2026 post); not tested by us |
| Needs Chrome running | Yes | No |
ScrapeBadger prices every call in credits. Its Reddit page lists a credit cost per endpoint, and its pricing page sets the dollar value of a credit by plan. A banner on its blog pages says new credit costs have been in effect since October 15, 2026. The figures below are what its Reddit page showed when we read it, so check the live page before you budget.
| Reddit call | Credits | 1,000 calls, pay as you go | 1,000 calls, Starter plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search posts | 8 | $1.20 | $0.65 |
| Get post | 8 | $1.20 | $0.65 |
| Subreddit posts (hot, new, top, rising) | 8 | $1.20 | $0.65 |
| Post comments (full tree) | 15 | $2.25 | $1.23 |
| Get subreddit | 5 | $0.75 | $0.41 |
| Trending posts | 3 | $0.45 | $0.25 |
The plan ladder, from its pricing page: pay as you go from $10 with credits that never expire, Starter $49 a month for 600,000 credits, Growth $129 for 1,800,000, Pro $299 for 5,000,000, Scale $699 for 13,000,000, and higher tiers up to $3,600 a month. Rate limits are 60 requests a minute on pay as you go and 300 on Starter and Growth. New accounts get 1,000 free credits, which its Reddit page equates to 125 search requests.
In plain numbers, a $49 Starter month buys 600,000 credits. That is about 75,000 post searches or about 40,000 comment trees, before any plan change. If you read a few hundred threads a month, that is cheap. If you run a pipeline, it is also cheap per call. The cost sits in the meter: every request is billed, so a loop that retries or paginates costs credits.
BigIdeasDB works the other way. Pro is $49 a month or $349 lifetime, and the Reddit tools are included, next to a corpus of 1M+ complaints from review sites and app stores. You cannot buy volume with it. We say so because a flat price is only a bargain at research volume. Use code SAVE20 at checkout. See pricing.
The output matters more than the access method, because the fields are what your analysis runs on. ScrapeBadger documents typed JSON. We did not find that it returns HTML, and we do not claim it does. BigIdeasDB also returns Reddit’s own JSON field names. The difference is width.
| Field | BigIdeasDB (live call) | ScrapeBadger (its docs) |
|---|---|---|
| Post id, title, author, subreddit | Yes | Yes |
| Post body (selftext) | Yes, full text | Yes, markdown |
| Score | Yes, exact integer | Yes, integer |
| Upvote ratio | Yes (0.99 on a live post) | Yes, float 0 to 1 |
| Comment count (num_comments) | Yes | Yes |
| created_utc | Yes | Yes, ISO 8601 |
| Post URL / permalink | Yes | Yes |
| Flair, awards, NSFW flag, media | Not in our standard output | Documented |
| Comment id, author, body, score, timestamp | Yes | Yes |
| Comment depth and nested replies array | Not in our standard output | Documented (depth, replies) |
| Subreddit metadata, user profiles | Raw JSON via fetch_reddit_json | Dedicated endpoints |
| Raw listing JSON | Yes, fetch_reddit_json | Not listed on its Reddit page |
Read that honestly. ScrapeBadger’s documented schema is wider: flair, awards, depth and user fields. BigIdeasDB returns the fields research uses most, exact score, upvote_ratio, num_comments and created_utc, straight from Reddit’s JSON, plus a raw JSON tool for anything else. If you need comment depth for threading analysis, ScrapeBadger documents it and we do not.
The JSON point matters most against HTML scrapers, which read what the page renders. Rendered pages show collapsed “load more” comments, rounded numbers and layout that breaks selectors. In our October 18 test the public HTML was a shell with no post links, covered on how to scrape Reddit in 2026. ScrapeBadger is not in that group, and neither are we. Extension-based scrapers are covered on the Thunderbit alternative page.
We found no dated report that ScrapeBadger’s Reddit endpoints failed after the update, and we did not test them. ScrapeBadger’s own post from May 29, 2026 says its scraper was returning “complete data” on that date. Treat that as a vendor claim, and treat a clean third-party record as the thing to look for.
What we could check, with dates:
So the honest status is: reported working by the vendor and by one Reddit-specific reviewer, not verified by us. BigIdeasDB is verified by us. On October 24, 2026 its search_reddit and fetch_subreddit tools returned posts while all three logged-out JSON URLs returned 403.
The thread behind the search for “scrapebadger alternative” is short. The original poster had pulled subreddit data with ScrapeBadger and wanted the same result elsewhere:
“I'd like to get some subreddit data and did that with scrapebadger recently. However, they have a hefty price increase in 3 days.” – r/WebScrapingInsider, October 2026
The poster had tried cheaper options and was not happy with them. In a reply, they wrote:
“The price was only slightly better, but the quality was far worse. API calls not going through, less data able to get, more complicated to get the same data (multiple calls), etc.” – r/WebScrapingInsider, October 2026
That quote is about the cheaper alternatives, not about ScrapeBadger. It tells you what buyers weigh: a price change at ScrapeBadger started the search, and failed calls, missing data and multiple calls per result were what made alternatives feel worse. Another commenter suggested a different route for small jobs:
“If its a few subs now and then and not some huge daily pull, you might not need an api at all.” – r/WebScrapingInsider, October 2026
That is the BigIdeasDB use case. Several other replies were vendors pitching their own services, so read the thread as a map of what people ask, not as a ranking. The thread contains no report that ScrapeBadger’s Reddit output stopped working.
Use Reddit’s official API if you need licensed commercial access and can get approved. Use a scraping tool for current public posts. The dates matter, and they are the same ones we track on our Reddit scraper page.
| Route | Cost | Limit that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Official API, free tier | Free, non-commercial only | Approval first; new access requests stop October 31, 2026 |
| Official API, commercial | About $12,000 a year, per ScrapeBadger’s post; Reddit publishes no price | Negotiated with Reddit |
| Scraping API (ScrapeBadger) | Credits per call, from $0.15 per 1,000 credits | Reddit’s Rule 8 now names unauthorized scraping; you carry that risk |
| BigIdeasDB | Included with Pro, $49 a month | Human pace; Chrome running; not bulk |
| Anonymous RSS | Free | Ends November 13, 2026 |
Reddit’s Rule 8 now says “No unauthorized scraping”, as ScrapeBadger’s own post quotes. ScrapeBadger argues that scraping public data is a terms-of-service matter and not a criminal one. We are not lawyers. For commercial or dataset-scale work, ask Reddit for approval or a data license, whichever tool you use. Our reading of the three tiers is in is scraping Reddit allowed, and the API route is in how to get a Reddit API key in 2026.
PRAW is still fine software, but it needs credentials, and Reddit stops new API access requests on October 31, 2026. If you do not already hold approved credentials, these are the routes.
| Rank | PRAW alternative | Needs | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | BigIdeasDB MCP | Pro, Chrome, Reddit login | Human pace, not bulk |
| 2 | ScrapeBadger Reddit API | API key, credits | Billed per call; not tested by us |
| 3 | Anonymous RSS | Nothing | Listings only; ends November 13, 2026 |
| 4 | PRAW with approved credentials | Reddit approval | Closed to new requests after October 31, 2026 |
The longer treatment, with code, is in the PRAW alternative page, Reddit scraper in Python and Reddit API alternative for AI.
The decision is about your job, not about which tool is better in the abstract.

Chrome must be running when your client asks for Reddit, and it can sit in the background. Rate and client notes are in MCP rate limits and clients, the tool list is in the MCP tools reference, and the full tutorial is how to scrape Reddit with MCP. For a comment-only job, see the Reddit comment scraper.
What it is not: not a bulk scraper, not a route around Reddit’s rules, and not always on. Bulk or excessive use is against the BigIdeasDB Terms. Reddit can change access again, and we will update this page when it does. See the BigIdeasDB Reddit MCP and the Clipper.
Every number on this page traces to a row below. Where a source cannot support a claim, the limitation column says so.
| Source | What we used it for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| ScrapeBadger Reddit page | 22 endpoints, credit costs, documented fields, comment tree, FAQ claims | Vendor claims; credit costs changed on October 15 per its banner, so the page may have updated since we read it |
| ScrapeBadger pricing page | Plan prices, credits, rate limits, credit value, residential IP claim | Vendor page; promotions and later changes not captured; dollar figures per call are our arithmetic |
| ScrapeBadger blog posts dated May 28, May 29 and June 17, 2026 | Its stated approach, the .json shutdown account, the $12,000 API figure | Vendor marketing; we did not verify its claims or its API price figure |
| Trustpilot page for ScrapeBadger | 33 reviews, 4.6 average, one July 31, 2026 Reddit review | Self-selected reviews; few mention Reddit; rating can change |
| r/WebScrapingInsider thread, October 2026 | The quotes and the price-increase context | One thread, 17 comments, several from vendors; anonymized to subreddit |
| BigIdeasDB logged-out request test, Oct 24, 2026 | The 3 of 3 JSON 403 result | One run, one residential IP, one date; results can differ by IP and time |
| BigIdeasDB tool calls, Oct 24, 2026 (fetch_subreddit, fetch_post_comments) | The fields returned | Few calls, one account; shows availability and fields, not scale |
| Google results for “scrapebadger alternative” and “scrapebadger”, US, Oct 24, 2026 | What ranks and what AI Mode cites | One market, one day |
| BigIdeasDB pricing config | Pro $49 a month, $349 lifetime | Prices can change; the pricing page is canonical |
This page does not claim that ScrapeBadger’s Reddit endpoints fail, that any ScrapeBadger price is fair, or how its infrastructure works beyond what it published. It claims only what we tested about BigIdeasDB and what ScrapeBadger and third parties published, with dates.
BigIdeasDB lets Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor search subreddits and read comment threads through your own logged-in Chrome. No Reddit API keys, no per-call billing, paced at a human speed. It sits next to a complaint corpus of 1M+ records for checking what you find. Included with BigIdeasDB Pro. Use code SAVE20.
See BigIdeasDB plans →Read the setup guide →BigIdeasDB is the best ScrapeBadger alternative for Reddit data. It reads Reddit through a proprietary session-based method, so there are no Reddit API keys, no proxy plan and no per-call credits. Search, subreddit listings and comment threads run inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through the hosted BigIdeasDB MCP. It is included with Pro at $49 a month or $349 lifetime.
BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit scraper in 2026 and the only one still working after Reddit's update, thanks to a proprietary session-based method. On October 24, 2026 three logged-out JSON requests returned 403 while its search_reddit and fetch_subreddit tools returned posts. It runs through the BigIdeasDB MCP and the Clipper Chrome extension's Reddit Connector, with no Reddit API keys.
BigIdeasDB is the best tool to scrape Reddit comments for research, because fetch_post_comments loads a full thread from a post URL inside your AI client with no API key. ScrapeBadger is the better fit for bulk pipelines: its comment endpoint costs 15 credits per call and returns a nested tree with depth fields. BigIdeasDB runs at about one fetch per second.
For research and AI-assisted work, BigIdeasDB is the best Reddit API alternative: four MCP tools, no developer app and no approval wait, while Reddit stops new API access requests on October 31, 2026. For high-volume code pipelines, a paid scraping API such as ScrapeBadger charges 8 credits per search call and 15 per comment tree, so budget per call.
Yes. BigIdeasDB still works: on October 24, 2026 its tools returned posts while all three logged-out Reddit JSON URLs we tried returned 403. ScrapeBadger says in a May 29, 2026 post that its Reddit scraper kept working after Reddit shut off unauthenticated .json. We did not test ScrapeBadger and found no dated report that its Reddit endpoints failed.
The best PRAW alternative is BigIdeasDB, which needs no Reddit app or approval and runs from your AI client. Other routes are a paid scraping API such as ScrapeBadger (credits per call), anonymous RSS feeds until Reddit ends them on November 13, 2026, or a browser extension. PRAW itself still works for people who already hold approved credentials.
ScrapeBadger charges credits per call. Its Reddit page lists 8 credits for a post search or subreddit listing and 15 for a comment tree. Pay as you go is $0.15 per 1,000 credits, so 1,000 comment-tree calls cost $2.25. Subscriptions start at $49 a month for 600,000 credits. A blog banner says new credit costs took effect October 15, 2026.
Use Reddit's official API if you need licensed commercial access and can get approved, though Reddit stops new access requests on October 31, 2026. Use a scraping tool for current public posts at research volume. BigIdeasDB covers the second case with no keys, ScrapeBadger covers it at bulk volume with per-call billing. Neither is a route around Reddit's policies.
