Side Hustle Age Requirements: Fiverr, Upwork, Etsy, eBay, YouTube, TikTok, Rover and 21 More, Checked Against Their Own Terms

Most side-hustle platforms set the minimum age at 18. Of the 28 marketplaces, creator programs and gig apps we checked against their own terms on September 25, 2026, 14 are 18+ with no published route for teens, including Upwork, eBay, TikTok Creator Rewards, Rover, Care.com, DoorDash and Instacart. 6 let a 13 to 17 year old work through an account a parent or guardian owns (Fiverr, Etsy, YouTube via AdSense, Vinted, Depop payments, Redbubble). 6 let a teen hold the account with consent (Poshmark, Spring, Twitch Affiliate, Patreon, Swagbucks, Roblox DevEx). 2 publish no clear number.

The Reddit and forum threads that rank for “fiverr age requirement” or “can you use fiverr under 18” are years old and contradict each other. This page is the table we wanted: one row per platform, the minimum age, whether a guardian route exists, what the guardian actually has to do, a link to the platform’s own page, and the date we checked it. Rules change. Click the source before you sign up.

Side hustle age requirements: the short answer

Not legal advice. These are US versions of each platform’s rules, taken from the platform’s own pages. Rules change, and some differ by country. Check the linked page before you sign up.

The full side hustle age table (28 platforms)

Every row was fetched from the platform’s own terms or help center on Sep 25, 2026. Where a page shows its own “last updated” or effective date, we list it next to the source. Where a platform publishes no age rule or no guardian route, the cell says “not published” rather than guessing.

If you only need one answer: Fiverr is 18, or 13 to 17 through a parent-owned account. Upwork is 18. Etsy is 18, or 13 to 17 through a parent-owned, supervised account. eBay is 18. YouTube monetization needs an 18+ AdSense for YouTube account, which can be a parent’s. TikTok Creator Rewards is 18. Rover is 18.

The three lanes: teen-held, parent-owned, and 18+ only

The table looks like 28 separate rules. It is really three lanes, and the lane matters more than the number, because it decides whose name is on the account and whose tax records the money touches.

The teen-held lane is small and skews toward creators and games. The parent-owned lane covers the biggest marketplaces teens actually want (Fiverr, Etsy, YouTube). The 18+ lane is almost every gig app that sends you to a stranger’s home or car, which is exactly where you would expect a platform to insist on an adult who can pass a background check.

Read this first: not legal advice, US rules, and they change

This is a research reference, not legal or tax advice. It covers the US versions of each platform. Some rules differ abroad: Printful sets 20 in Japan, TikTok Creator Rewards is only open in eight countries, and Vinted’s terms say an updated version takes effect on October 8, 2026. State law matters for contracts and taxes. Your parent or guardian should be part of this from the first step.

We deliberately excluded gambling, crypto, trading and adult platforms. They are not side hustles for teens, and we do not list them anywhere on this page.

Why so many platforms say 18

Two reasons, and neither is personal. The first is contracts. According to Cornell’s Legal Information Institute, “in most states, contracts entered by minors are voidable.” Every marketplace agreement is a contract. Upwork’s terms say this directly: you promise you are eligible to enter the agreement “including because you are 18 years or older.” eBay gives being under 18 as its example of someone who cannot form a binding contract.

The second is money. A platform that pays you must know who you are, which means ID, a Social Security number and tax forms. TaskRabbit requires an SSN and an ID and background check. Roblox DevEx wants a W-9 on file. Depop may ask a parent for ID or taxpayer details before paying out. A 15-year-old rarely has all of that, so the adult route is the part that makes the account legally solid.

What 151 teens ran into

We ran 33 Reddit searches (“fiverr under 18,” “etsy shop minor,” “youtube monetization under 18,” “rover under 18” and 29 variants), deduplicated 2,700+ unique posts, filtered by keyword, then read every candidate by hand. A post counted only if the author was under 18 (or described an account opened under 18) and asked about, or hit, an age, ID or payout wall on a platform in our table. Parents posting for a child, buyers, and gambling, crypto and adult posts were excluded. 151 posts qualified, from 45 subreddits, carrying 1,500+ comments. 99 of the 151 (66%) were posted since January 2024, and 40 in 2026 alone. Teens are running into this more, not less.

YouTube leads because monetization is the one program where a teen can hit every requirement (subscribers, watch hours) and only then learn that the payout account must belong to an adult. Google Trends backs up the demand: over the last five years, “youtube monetization age” averaged 6.6 on Google’s 0 to 100 scale in the US, against 0.3 to 0.6 for the Fiverr, Etsy, eBay and Upwork age queries (Google Trends, September 2026).

When the wall hits: usually at the first payout

Reading the posts, the same shape repeats. Signing up is easy. Listing is easy. The sale goes through. Then, at the first withdrawal or when earnings cross a threshold, the platform asks for ID, and the teen cannot provide it.

“Went to verify my ID and now it says I gotta be 18. What should I do?” – r/Depop

The lesson for anyone starting: the age rule is not enforced when you sign up. It is enforced when you try to get paid. That is the worst possible moment to discover it, because by then there is money and a customer on the line.

The account at 18 problem nobody warns you about

This is the finding we did not expect. 22 of the 151 posts (14.6%) were not about getting in. They were about getting out: a teen who did everything right, ran a shop or channel through a parent’s account, turned 18, and found the account could not simply be moved into their own name.

The platforms say so, if you read closely. Etsy’s terms state that “accounts are generally not transferable.” eBay forbids transferring an account, including its feedback, to another party without its consent. On YouTube, switching from a parent’s AdSense to your own triggered duplicate-account flags for several posters.

“Etsy will not allow me to change the ownership of the account from my mother to me as I was a minor when I started this account.” – r/Etsy

“After a year I turned 18 and went to make a new account under my name, through google adsense NOT youtube studio. I then got flagged for multiple adsense accounts and taken off of the partner program.” – r/PartneredYoutube

The practical fix is boring and effective: from day one, keep your listing text, photos, prices, reviews and customer contacts in files you own. Then a fresh account at 18 is a weekend of relisting, not a restart. Building an audience you can take with you (an email list, a local reputation) matters more than any one marketplace profile.

What app store reviews add

Reddit shows teens asking. App reviews show what happens to everyone at the verification step. We pulled 760+ one and two star reviews of 30 side-hustle app listings (Fiverr, Upwork, Etsy, eBay, Rover, Wag, Care.com, TaskRabbit, DoorDash Dasher, Instacart Shopper, Swagbucks, Freecash, Twitch, TikTok, YouTube Studio and others, Apple and Google Play) from BigIdeasDB’s app store data, dated April 2025 to February 2026, and counted how many mention an ID, verification or background-check gate, or a ban.

Freelance and survey apps lead because both pay out money you already earned, so the ID check lands on a balance. In local services the gate is the paid background check: 20 of the 24 low-star reviews that mention a background check also mention paying for it. “They’ll take your money for a background check and you’ll get nothing in return.” – App Store review (Rover)

Fiverr age requirement: 18, or 13 to 17 through a parent-owned account

Fiverr’s Terms of Service (last update January 2026) are precise: the site is for users “at least 18 years of age and of legal age to form a binding contract. If you are under 18 and at least 13 years of age, you are only permitted to use the Site through an account owned by a parent or legal guardian with their appropriate permission.” Under 13 is not allowed.

The word that matters is “owned.” An account in your own name with your parent watching does not meet the rule. Several teens in our sample learned that the hard way.

“I’m 15 years old and recently got temporarily banned by Fiverr, with a message saying my account will be permanently suspended after 60 days.” – r/Fiverr

“Full parental permission basically means you make an account under your parent’s name (SSN+ID if applicable) and sell on their account.” – r/Fiverr

“When I was under 18, I created a Fiverr account under my father's name and ID, which was done in line with Fiverr’s policy that requires minors (13–17) to use a parent or guardian’s account under supervision.” – r/Fiverr

That last poster did it correctly, then turned 18 and asked how to take the account over. See the account at 18 section above. Upwork age requirement: 18, no guardian route

Upwork’s Terms of Service require you to be “either a legal entity or an individual who is at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your country if the age of majority is over 18).” There is no parent-owned route like Fiverr’s. That is why answers in the Upwork community are blunt when a teen asks about using a parent’s name.

“No. It is not a viable idea at all. It is fraud and has legal and tax implications.” – r/Upwork

“later upwork banned my account because i was under 18, and i used to use my sister’s account.” – r/FindVideoEditors

Freelance demand for context: what clients post

If you are waiting to turn 18 for Upwork, it helps to know what clients ask for. In BigIdeasDB’s Upwork data, only 8.5% of 5,300+ job postings are marked entry level. The skills teens most often have show up like this (title keyword matches, September 2026):

Etsy age requirement: 18, or 13 to 17 through a supervised parent account

Etsy’s Terms of Use (last updated August 26, 2025) say “you must be 18 years or older to use our Services,” and that minors 13 to 17 may use Etsy only “through an account owned by a parent or legal guardian with their appropriate permission and under their direct supervision.” The Minors Policy adds seller rules: use the About section to disclose all members of the shop, including the guardian who owns it; all billing information must belong to the guardian; and if using Etsy Payments, the guardian registers with their information.

“You can't transfer accounts, that is why so many people tell minors to wait until they are 18.” – r/Etsy

How old do you have to be to sell on eBay? 18

eBay’s User Agreement (effective June 28, 2026 for existing users) says you may not use its services “if you are not able to form legally binding contracts (for example, if you are under 18 years old).” It publishes no guardian route, and it bars transferring your account and feedback to another party without eBay’s consent.

In practice, teens resell through a parent who lists on their own eBay account. That makes the parent the seller for tax reporting, which one UK teen worried about openly:

“I am currently well over ebay's limit of £1740 in revenue per year before the activity is reported to HMRC.” – r/smallbusinessuk

Amazon Seller and Handmade: no number, but contract capacity required

Amazon’s Business Solutions Agreement does not print a minimum age. It says use of the services “is limited to parties that can lawfully enter into and form contracts under applicable Law (for example, the Elected Country may not allow minors to use the Services).” We found no separate age rule for Amazon Handmade. Registration also asks for a legal name, address and further verification. Treat Amazon selling as adult-only.

Depop age requirement: 13 to join, 18 (or a guardian) to get paid

Depop’s help centre says you must be 13 or older to sign up and over 18 to use PayPal and Depop Payments. If you are not 18, it asks you to talk to a parent or guardian “as you may be required to provide a valid ID, or SSN if you are in the US.” Its tips for parents and guardians say the same about photographic ID and taxpayer information.

“I put in my age like I was born in 2000, but I was born in 2008.” – r/Depop

Poshmark (13 with permission) and Mercari (18)

Poshmark’s Terms of Service (effective October 3, 2024) say you may not use the service under 13, and that “if you are at least 13 but under the age of 18, you may only use the Service with permission of your parent or guardian as described in our Minors Policy.” If the account is shared with a parent, both are responsible for activity on it. That makes Poshmark one of the few resale apps a teen can hold with consent.

Mercari’s Terms of Service (effective February 24, 2025) say that for an individual to have an account “you must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority in your state of residence,” and you must live in the US. No guardian route is published.

Vinted: 18, or 13+ through an account a parent creates

Vinted’s US Terms and Conditions say the site is intended for people over 18. A parent or guardian “may decide to create an Account for the minor,” accepting the terms on the minor’s behalf and taking “full responsibility for the minor’s use of the Site (including, when requested, any regulatory compliance verification or check).” The exception applies to minors of at least 13.

Vinted produced some of the most painful posts in our sample, because wallets freeze at earnings thresholds. It also produced the worst advice.

“Vinted account was permanently blocked when I was 17 – with over 16,000 PLN (€4000) locked forever.” – r/vinted

“use your parents id and ur bank account, they don’t check if the name and bank account name matches or not bc i’ve done it. ur not gon get banned trust” – r/vinted

Redbubble (18, supervised), Spring (13 with approval), Printful (18)

Redbubble’s User Agreement (May 15, 2026) says you must be at least 18, and “minors are not permitted to use the Marketplace under any circumstances unless properly supervised by their parent or legal guardian.”

Spring, formerly Teespring, is friendlier. Its Terms of Service say that under 13 you may not use the service, and “if you are under 18 years old, you may use the Spring Service only with the approval of your parent or guardian.”

Printful’s terms (September 15, 2026) require individuals to certify they are at least 18 (20 in Japan). No guardian route is published.

If you like the marketplace model itself, marketplace business ideas looks at it from the builder’s side.

YouTube monetization age: 13 to create, 18 for the AdSense account

YouTube’s Partner Program overview requires an AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel. Google’s AdSense help is explicit: “The minimum age requirement to participate in AdSense for YouTube is 18 years.” If you are under 18, “the only way to start monetizing your videos is to link your YouTube channel to an approved AdSense for YouTube account (of a parent or guardian who is over 18).” The general AdSense age page adds that all payments are made to the adult.

The common mistake is applying yourself in the excitement of hitting the threshold, submitting your own ID, and getting disapproved. Fixing that is slow.

“I'm 14, meaning I can't run an AdSense account. That means my guardian will have to get an AdSense account and collect the money.” – r/NewTubers

TikTok Creator Rewards age requirement: 18

TikTok’s Creator Portal says “you need to be at least 18 years old to participate.” You also need at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, a personal account in good standing, and to be based in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico or Brazil. There is no guardian route. People still search for the “TikTok Creator Fund”; Creator Rewards is the current program.

“I have been using a false age for my TikTok account and I have been accepted into the creators reward program at 17. But I need to verify my age and I can’t do that” – r/TikTokMonetizing

Twitch Affiliate: 13 to 17 with parental consent

Twitch’s help article on joining the Affiliate Program says: “If you’re 13-17 years old, you may join the Affiliate Program with parental or guardian consent and supervision.” That makes Twitch a teen-held route.

The catch, reported again and again in r/Twitch, is the payout step during onboarding, which several teens say stopped them for being under 18 even after they entered a guardian’s details. We could not verify the onboarding form itself, so treat that as reported, not documented.

“I've talked to my dad, and he agreed!!” – r/Twitch

Instagram and Meta monetization: 18

Instagram’s help center lists “be 18 years or older” as a requirement to earn from Gifts, and the same for affiliate partnerships, which also need more than 1,000 followers and a public professional account. Meta’s Partner Monetization Policies page we fetched does not state an age itself. No guardian route is published for any of them.

Patreon (13, creator page with permission) and Ko-fi (18)

Patreon’s Terms of Use (last updated May 27, 2026) set 13 as the minimum to use Patreon and say “you must be at least 18 years old or have your parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to have a creator page on Patreon.” That is a teen-held route with permission.

Ko-fi’s terms (effective July 13, 2026) are the opposite: “To register a ‘Creator’ account you must be a minimum of 18 years of age,” and the same applies to supporters.

Substack: 16, and legal age to contract

Substack’s Terms of Use (effective April 21, 2025) say you may not use Substack under 16, and separately that you represent you are “of legal age to form a binding contract.” The two lines pull in different directions for a 16 or 17 year old, and Substack publishes no guardian route. Roblox DevEx: 13+

Roblox’s DevEx Terms require you to “be at least 13 years of age or older,” hold at least 30,000 earned Robux, have a verified email and a DevEx portal account, and have an IRS form W-9 (US) or W-8 on file. The terms add that “income that Minors earn can impact their parents’ tax returns.” It is the only cash-out program on our list with a 13+ rule and no stated guardian step, though the tax form usually means a parent gets involved anyway.

“I tried to cash out 60k Robux ($210) through DevEx like a week ago, but it got denied and they just gave me my Robux back.” – r/robloxgamedev

Discord: 13 to use, 18 to monetize

Discord’s Terms of Service (August 29, 2025) require users to be at least 13 and meet their country’s minimum age. Its Monetization Policy lists “You must be 18 years or older” as the first requirement for users, creators and developers who want to earn. Running a server is fine at 15. Charging for it is not.

Rover, Wag and Care.com age requirement: 18

Rover’s sitter FAQ: “You must be at least 18 years of age to become a sitter and dog walker on Rover.” Care.com’s terms (October 14, 2025): “Our Services are available only to individuals who are eighteen (18) years of age or older,” and underage registrations are terminated. Wag’s terms require 18, with a parent agreeing on your behalf only if you are 18 but below your state’s age of majority.

“I was wondering if my mom could make an account for me or something and I could use it. Or would I have to wait until i’m 18??” – r/RoverPetSitting

You do not need an app to pet sit. The work is the same when a neighbor pays you directly, and adults complain loudly about these apps anyway:

“60 bucks for a background check? i’d pay 25 but 60 is literally insane.” – App Store review (Wag Pet Caregiver)

“I tried signing up a bit ago and once I paid for the background check my account was immediately suspended” – App Store review (Care.com)

TaskRabbit, DoorDash and Instacart: 18 (or older)

TaskRabbit’s Tasker requirements say Taskers must be at least 18, have a US Social Security number for the background check, and pass an ID check. DoorDash’s Dasher page says Dashers must be 18 or older, 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and West Virginia, and 21 in California. Instacart’s shopper page requires 18, US work authorization, lifting up to 40 pounds, a car and a smartphone.

That is identity fraud on a platform that runs background checks for safety reasons, and it puts the friend or parent on the hook. Do not do it.

Swagbucks and survey sites: 13 with approval, then ID at cash-out

Swagbucks’ Terms of Use (effective September 1, 2025) prohibit anyone under 13, and say users under 18 represent that they have a parent or guardian’s approval. The parent is then responsible for the child’s activity. Survey apps top our app review table for gate complaints, because the ID request lands after the points are earned.

“So swagbucks just asked me to verify ID after I sent in a ticket. I don’t have an ID yet because I’m under 18.” – r/SwagBucks

“I did a bunch of surveys and played games, got almost 1000 swag bucks and then they asked me for a government ID to cash out.” – Google Play review (Swagbucks)

Never lie about your age or borrow a parent’s ID

This is the most important section on the page. A real comment in our sample told a 17-year-old to verify with a parent’s ID and their own bank account because “they don’t check.” That is bad advice, for three reasons.

• Bans are usually permanent. A false age is a terms violation, not a mistake to fix. Teens in our sample who entered a fake birth date (6 of 151 had already done it) could not pass verification, and appeals rarely help.
• Money gets frozen. The check arrives at payout, so the balance is what gets held. One poster lost access to about €4,000.
• It drags your parent in. Their name, ID and tax number end up on an account they did not agree to run. That is a legal and tax problem for them, and on platforms with background checks it is identity misuse.

There is a legitimate version of “use your parent’s account”: on Fiverr, Etsy, Vinted, Depop payments and YouTube AdSense, the parent genuinely owns the account and supervises it. The difference is not the paperwork. It is whether your parent actually knows, agrees and stays involved.

Doing the parent route right

If the platform you want is in the parent-owned lane, set it up like this:

1. Read the platform’s rule together. Open the source link from the table with your parent.
2. Your parent opens the account with their own real details, or approves it where the platform allows a teen-held account.
3. Disclose where required. Etsy wants every shop member, including the guardian, named in the About section.
4. Pick where the money lands. Usually a bank account your parent owns or co-owns. Payment rules are in how to accept payments under 18.
5. Keep a simple ledger of sales and costs, because the income may show up on your parent’s tax records.
6. Export your work regularly (listings, photos, customer list) so you can rebuild in your own name at 18.

If your balance is already stuck

Stop selling on the account. Do not submit someone else’s ID. Contact support honestly, say you are under 18, and ask how to close the account and release the funds, or whether a parent can take ownership. Answer any open orders so buyers are not hurt. One commenter in r/LegalAdviceUK noted that eBay may hold funds for up to 180 days to cover disputes, so expect a wait rather than instant resolution. Then restart through a proper route.

Taxes: the $400 rule applies at any age

The IRS says you must file Schedule SE if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more, the self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, and “the self-employment tax rules apply no matter how old you are.” Roblox’s DevEx terms flag the same thing from the other side: a minor’s income can affect a parent’s return. Keep a ledger from the first sale and ask your parent or a tax professional before you file.

Side hustles with no age gate at all

Every wall on this page belongs to a platform. What we deliberately left out

Gambling and sweepstakes apps, crypto and “free stock” offers, trading platforms and adult content platforms are excluded entirely. So are “app tester” and task-scam offers that ask you to pay first. None of them belong on a teen side-hustle list, whatever their stated age rule.

Methodology

Platform rules. For each of the 28 platforms we fetched the platform’s own terms or help page on September 25, 2026, using a headless browser and, where a page blocked it, a proxy fetch. We searched each page for age, minor and guardian language and quoted it. Where no rule appeared we wrote “not published.” We did not use third-party summaries for any row.

Reddit. 33 searches across all of Reddit, all time, up to 100 results each, deduplicated to 2,700+ unique posts. A keyword filter for a stated age under 18 plus a platform name produced 319 candidates, every one read by hand; 151 qualified. Wall types were keyword-matched on the post text and spot-checked. Quotes are verbatim and attributed to subreddit only.

App reviews and Upwork. Read-only SQL over BigIdeasDB’s app store corpus (1 to 2 star reviews of 30 listings) and Upwork job titles (5,300+ postings), keyword-matched. Data sources and their limits

What we could not verify

• Amazon’s buyer-side Conditions of Use could not be fetched, so the Amazon row relies on the seller agreement only.
• Twitch’s payout step is described from Reddit reports; the help article says 13 to 17 may join with consent.
• Poshmark’s Minors Policy page itself did not load; the row quotes the Terms of Service that reference it.
• Meta’s Partner Monetization Policies page did not show an age; the Instagram row uses the Gifts and affiliate help pages.
• Vinted shows a new version of its terms applying from October 8, 2026; the row reflects the text shown on September 25, 2026.
• Enforcement is not in any document. Whether a platform actually catches an underage account, and when, comes only from user reports.
